As asphalt pavements can heat up to 70 degreesCelsius during solar irradiation, a comparison with solar hot water systems seemsobvious. Given the enormous area of asphalt pavement that is available, thethermal energy potential therefore appears infinite. This heat can be utilized indifferent ways. Generally the energy will have to be stored over seasons, forexample in an aquifer. Several designs have been developed to extract heat froman asphalt pavement. Most available solutions apply a heat exchanger design byincorporating tubes in the asphalt pavement. This type of asphalt pavement inthe Netherlands is known as ´asphalt collector´. Demand comes from buildings,supply from the asphalt pavement. Through the use of an aquifer, the differencein timing between seasonal supply and demand is covered to a large extent.Environmental BenefitsIn addition to its energy potential, the advantage in using an asphalt collector isthe maintenance of the pavement. In summer time the maximum temperature ofthe asphalt pavement can be reduced so that the chance of permanentdeformation is mitigated. In winter time, it is possible to avoid slippery roads byincreasing the minimum pavement temperature.
