NEAFL PREVIEWELMINATION FINALFull forward Josh Pullman and midfield ace Damien Steven will return tothe Redland side as they go in search of an historic first State Leaguefinals win this weekend.Pullman, the Bombers’ leading goal-kicker this year, and Steven, a keymember of an underrated yet efficient midfield unit, will resume as theyhost the Gold Coast Suns Reserves in the NEAFL elimination final atVictoria Point on Sunday. They missed the Round 21 trip to Darwin and the inconsequential78-point loss to the NT Thunder due to injury. Also in line to return from injury are State U21 ace and draft hopefulBlake Grewar, and promising youngster Luke Rogerson, who impressedin his only two outings in Rounds 18-19.When teams were lodged with the NEAFL this morning Grewar andRogerson were bracketed on an eight-man interchange bench which willbe trimmed to five before game time, with Matt Sondergeld still to provehis fitness.Redland, who joined the State League competition in 2000, have playeda total of three finals in two separate finals campaigns without a win.In 2001 they finished the home-and-away season fifth before losingto Broadbeach in the elimination final. And in 2009 they finished thirdafter the regular season but went out in straight sets when beaten bySouthport in the qualifying final and Mt.Gravatt in the knockout semi-final.So, it will be an altogether new experience for the club if they can getover the Suns on Sunday. The Bombers and the Suns have met only once this year – in Round 9at Victoria Point in what was Carse’s 100th game for Redland. It wasn’t ahappy celebration.Despite five goals from Josh Pullman the home side conceded 10 goalsin the second quarter and were beaten 61 points. Alik Magin was bestafield for the Suns with four goals. The Suns Reserves, who fielded only seven listed players in their Round21 loss to Mt.Gravatt, have named nine this week, including JaredBrennan, Andrew McQualter, Jacob Gilbee and Josh Toy.In a total of 13 changes, Reserves coach Shaun Hart will also welcomethe return from injury of senior listees Sam Iles and Hayden Jolly, plusBroadbeach’s All-Australian U18 choice Andrew Boston, and Boston’sState U18 teammates Jordon Bourke and Brian Coleman-Broome, fromMorningside.Caleb Hay, a 2011 Queensland U16 representative from the NorthernRivers of NSW, will play his first game as a Suns top-up player, alongwith the returning foursome of Josh Bull (Broadbeach), Harrison Fraser(Surfers Paradise), Damien Dewis and Ethan Alexander-Crackel(Labrador).Stephan Thynne, who played as a Suns top-up last week, has won a spotin the Southport finals side.Jackson Rolfe and Dalton Tucker, emergencies for the Sharks thisweekend, are among the other Suns exclusions, with Labrador pair TomFields and Adam Clarke and Morningside’s Chris Hunt, who are ineligible.Other ‘outs’ are Jack Ryan, Callum Carseldine, Paddy Rankin, BrodieTebbutt and Isaac Rokeby.QUALIFYING FINALSouthport have lost classy midfielder Sam Whish-Wilson for thequalifying final against the Brisbane Lions Reserves at Coorparootomorrow (Saturday) after he’d played 17 of a possible 18 games throughthe home-and-away season.Club medical staff ruled out the classy Tasmanian after he wasconcussed in the Sharks’ close win over Broadbeach last weekend. Also ruled out with a hamstring injury was young defender Tyson Kruse, who was bidding for what would have been a fairytale finals debut in justhis third senior game after getting his chance in Round 17.Thynne, who has played only one of the last five games in the topSouthport side after playing 11 of the first 13, was recalled with ArnoldKnight, who had spent the past two weeks of the home-and-away seasonin the Reserves.Nathan Trevena, who played four games in a row mid-season, wasnamed in the emergencies withRolfe, who hasn’t been able to crack it for a senior game with the Sharksafter moving from Broadbeach this year, and Dalton Tucker, who hasn’tplayed a senior game this year. The Lions Reserves, coming off a loss to the Sydney Swans Reserveslast week that cost them the minor premiership, have named a side whichincludes seven changes and 15 listed players.Long-term skipper James Hawksley has been promoted to the AFL side, while highly-rated top-up Jackson Starcevich has been ruled unfit.Round 21 top-ups Daniel Daye, Daniel Duffield, Matthew Green, SamGribble and Matthew Joseph have been left out.Strike forward Aaron Cornelius and listed defender Patrick Wearden, outthrough injury last week, have been named to return, while Elliott Yeo,dropped from the AFL side for Saturday’s AFL clash with Port Adelaide inAdelaide, has been included.Yeo, though, is listed with Billy Longer and Sam Docherty, and wouldappeal as the most likely choice to travel with the AFL side as theemergency player, thereby ruling him out of the NEAFL final.Classy Aspley teenager Isaac Conway and his State U18 teammatesJosh Smith and Rhys Power appeal as quality top-ups with Sandgate/Aspley Josh Stiller, who has played six top-up games this year.Cheynee Stiller was named by Lions Reserves coach Nathan Clarke totake over the Lions captaincy from Hawksley. The Lions and the Sharks have also met only once this year – when theLions won by 79 points at Fankhauser Reserve in what was a top-of-thetableclash in Round 13.The Lions blew the home side away with five goals in a sizzling 12-minuteopening in which the Sharks only had the ball inside their forward 50mzone once, and were never seriously challenged thereafter as theyinflicted Southport’s biggest loss of the year.Cornelius kicked five goals and Jared Polec four while Claye Beams wasbest afield in a side which included 18 listed players.

Thesetwo teams have been the benchmark of the competition for season2012 and this game should be a cracker.Morningside come into the Grand Final as slight favoritesafter accounting for Mt Gravatt in the Semi Final by 2 points.Morningside were well serviced in that game by Hayden Bertoli-Simmonds, with Ben Bisset and Matthew Serrurier kicking 3goals. The Panthers would have enjoyed the week off knowing thevultures would have had a hard tough battle in the preliminary finalagainst Aspley.Mt Gravatt are coming off a good solid win against Aspley to playoff in the Grand Final. The vultures had a battle on their handsuntil they were able to kick away in the last quarter. They were wellserviced in that game by Jordan Roberts and Jayden Crawley’s withpower forward Leigh Stones kicking 7 majors. This game looks to be a toss of the coin with potentially the battle ofthe captains influencing the outcome of the game. Tom Symmons –Buchanan is set to renew his tagging role on opposition captain andinfluential mid fielder Jordan Plumridge and will set the scene forthe day. This game is too close to call with the potential to have ourfirst AFLQ drawn Grand Final for season 2012.

The Catshave kicked a combined score of 44 goals 55 against the Tiger thisseason, so the Cats will need to rectify this on Sunday. This game promises to be a great clash with plenty of young talenton display, but a 4 -0 season record against Labrador should seeBroadbeach advance to the preliminary final.
