Tuggeranong - BYE

BOUNDARY
LINE
The Eastlake Football Club made a big statement
last weekend when they handed out a footy lesson
to Tuggeranong. In a game that most pundits
thought could have gone either way, it was the
Demons who really flexed some muscle to record
a convincing win. They have now all but secured a
finals birth and are looking dangerous, just as they
were around the same time last year.
Congratulations to the GIANTS for taking its home
game to the Riverina, what a great chance for both
clubs and the League to showcase the great standard
of footy that is the NEAFL.
Queanbeyan are back at home on Sunday after their
road trip last weekend to Southport, and they host the
powerful Swans. Don’t be surprised to see the Tigers
stretch Sydney, as they were a lot closer to the Sharks
last week than what the final score suggested.
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT’S ONLY THREE WEEKS TO GO UNTIL THE
FINALS? MAKE SURE YOU BLOCK OUT YOUR WEEKENDS COME
SEPTEMBER BECAUSE THE ACTION WILL REALLY HOT UP AS WE GET
TO THE POINTY END OF THE SEASON.
I AM VERY HAPPY TO CONFIRM THAT THIS YEAR’S GALA PRESENTATION
EVENING, WHICH WILL ENCOMPASS THE MULROONEY MEDAL AS WELL AS
ALL THE OTHER SENIOR AND WOMEN’S BEST AND FAIREST AWARDS, WILL
BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY 7 SEPTEMBER AT THE HELLENIC CLUB IN WODEN.
ALL ARE VERY WELCOME AND THIS YEAR WE WOULD REALLY LOVE TO SEE
MANY WIVES, GIRLFRIENDS AND PARTNERS ATTEND.
MORE INFORMATION WILL BE ON THE WWW.NEAFL.COM.AU AND
WWW.SEEYOUATTHEFOOTY.COM.AU WEBSITES IN COMING DAYS,
BUT LOCK THE DATE IN FOR WHAT WILL BE A GREAT
NIGHT OF CELEBRATIONS.
Ainslie, fresh off the bye, will look to stretch their
winning streak to six when they take on the in form
Demons at Manuka this Saturday. A cracking game
is guaranteed.
The GIANTS and Belconnen hit the ground this
Saturday when they play at Robertson Oval Wagga.
Good luck to all clubs competing across the grades
this weekend and may the best teams win.
IMPORTANT
SUPPORT
No football club
could survive without
generous sponsors
backing them from
their boardrooms and
shop fronts.
Ainslie Football Club has been
involved in Canberra’s Australian
football competition since 1927
and while there has been changes
in sponsorship over the years the
name that appears on the front of
the club’s strip today is The Home
Loan Centre.
The company has been supporting
the team for five years as the
major sponsor, in a relationship
that managing director John de la
Torre says is a happy one.
“The spirit of the club is enormous
and we’re always about doing
business with people we like,” said
de la Torre.
“The committee is an excellent
committee… They have a view
about the competition locally, so
it makes it easy to be supporting
them.”
Ainslie’s association with The
Home Loan Centre came about
because a key employee at the
business used to be a player at
the club, and their family is still
involved now.
This opened the door for the deal
to go ahead, which de la Torre said
was great because the club colours
were coincidentally a match
for The Home Loan Centre’s logo.
Another prominent sponsor of the
Ainslie Football Club is Hamilton
Brokers Proprietary Limited.
Director of the business Don
Nolan has been involved
with the club
for 18 years, which
involved a junior
coaching role and
having his two sons
play for the side.
The director’s connection
to the club
was a contributing
factor in the
company’s decision
to begin the sponsorship
which has now
been going for three
years.
Nolan is optimistic about the future
of Australian football in Canberra
and the new and improved
NEAFL, both for his company and
the sport itself.
“I think the NEAFL is
still relatively
unknown,” said Nolan.
“It’ll take another
year, and the slow
recognition of the
FOXTEL Cup will assist,
to raise the profile of
the competition.”
These are not the only two sponsors
involved with the Ainslie
Football Club as the side’s books
will show.
There are over 33 companies listed
by Ainslie on their website which
includes individual, ground and
teams sponsors.
Both spokesmen for the companies
mentioned in this article said
how easy it was to deal with the
north Canberra club.
The club’s friendly exterior and
community based outlook are the
major reasons why they have been
successful off the field, and that
in turn has lead to their achievements
on it.
HAWKS STILL A
CHANCE...
The Tuggeranong
Hawks will have to
direct their focus
to next season after
all but drowning
their finals chances
– being demolished by
Eastlake last Sunday.
It was a must win game for the
Hawks, but they never looked
in it with the Demons running
them off their feet and eventually
winning by 20 goals – 10.12.72 to
29.18.192.
The interesting
question is: Where
to now for the
Hawks? They have
the bye this weekend
but then how do
they approach the
remaining two games
against Belconnen
and Queanbeyan?
The brown and yellow guernseys
are still mathematically in the
race for the nearly sealed fourth
spot. The chances are incredibly
slim and if they are to make
it they will have to win their
final two matches by massive
margins. They might have a good
chance considering the Magpies
and Tigers only have 4 wins
between them but the Hawks
would have to rely on Eastlake
suffering huge losses in their final
two games.
Coach Glenn Gorman decried
his team for not being hungry
enough against the Demons. And
really, the chance to make a mark
on the competition has passed.
There were missed opportunities
during the season and the Hawks
will have to pay the price for that.
If only they had managed to hold
on against Ainslie in round six
and Queanbeyan in round nine
it could be a different story now.
Gorman has said time and time
again that the key is belief -
Believe and you can win games.
This isn’t to say that the season
hasn’t been positive for
Tuggeranong.
They started
the year with
an aura of
confidence
after winning
some monumental
games towards
the end of 2010 and
continued that
attitude through
the preseason.
Their goal has been to make
the finals – it probably won’t
happen. But the young team
have built a foundation together
and will certainly build again for
next season.
Gorman believes there are still
some issues to work through.
He was adamant the Hawks
could have beaten Eastlake last
weekend and the team needs
to start asking themselves
questions about why they didn’t
and what is stopping the team
from performing.
They have to remember the pain
now and use it in 2012.
By James Fennessy
The HSC exam period
can be a stressful
time, and so can playing
football for a
side where no spot
is guaranteed but
no matter where you
are, and what tough
times lay ahead, it’s
always good to have
a mate nearby.
For 18-year-old Jacob Townsend
that mate is GIANTS teammate
Kurt Aylett.
The pair who grew-up across
the road from each other in the
country New South Wales town of
Leeton, embarked on their football
adventure together and now head
to Wagga Wagga to represent the
GIANTS and rural NSW.
“Kurt and I played in the same
side since Under-12’s through to
Under-16’s,” Townsend said.
“His house and my house are
probably about 400 metres away
from each other.”
The pair played for the Leeton
Crows, who will be playing in
Wagga Waggaon the same day
the GIANTS are in town.
“I think they’re playing at the
same time as us so I’m not sure
how many of my mates will get
down to our game,” Townsend
said.
Townsend said he remains
focused even though he is in the
middle of his HSC exam period at
Patrician Brothers in Blacktown,
where his favourite subjects
are Physical Education and
woodwork.
“The HSC is going
alright at the moment, I’ve been
going good at school so
hopefully I can keep
carrying that through
to exams,”
he said.
“I’m enjoying the
practical side of things,
like making things from
scratch in woodwork.
“I’m thinking that if footy
wasn’t there I’d probably
be looking for work in the
building and construction
industry.”
The young football
talent said it can be hard juggling
school with training and playing
but acknowledged the GIANTS
ongoing support.
“The club has been really good
with that,” he said.
“If I have got a lot
of school work on
they will say ‘stay at
school and do
assignments’ which
is great.”
Townsend is looking forward to
throwing on a GIANTS jumper
when GWS meet Belconnen at
Wagga Wagga, just a short drive
down the Sturt Highway from his
hometown.
“Having family watching me will
make me want to play better but
every time I play for the GIANTS
I want to do my best,” Townsend
said.
“To play in a regional spot is good
for the GIANTS and also for the
footy in that area,” he said.
“To have a quality game of
football in Wagga is great for the
development of the game.”

The Parental and Community Engagement
The Parental and
Community Engagement
(PaCE) Program
is a joint initiative
between the AFL and
DEEWR, that better
supports Indigenous
Parents and communities
to participate
in educational
decision making
activities.
Students and parents
participate in fun activities to
develop life skills and a greater
understanding of culture. In
Wagga Wagga, the program has
been operating out of Mount
Austin High School (MAHS)
since late March 2011.
In the short time that the
program has been running
the AFL has been able to
set up healthy relationships
MAHS Staff and Community
Groups. Michael Vincent is the
coordinator of the program,
“I have developed a strong
relationship with the Aboriginal
Education Assistants at MAHS,
Michelle Gemmell, and
Steve O’Neil. The school is
very supportive and Deputy
Principal Bruce Fisher is always
involved.”
“The community is getting right
behind the program, and community
groups such as Family
Services, Riverina Medical and
Dental Aboriginal Corporation,
Wagga Wagga Aboriginal Elders
Group, Department of Family
Community Services, MAHS,
Riverina Community College
and Ashmont Community
Centre will add great value for
the Parents and Students
participating”
A steering committee
has been put
together to guide
the program and
consists of:
- John Love – PaCE Program
Manager NSW/ACT
- Michael Vincent – PaCE
Program Coordinator
Wagga Wagga
- Aunty Isabel Reid -
Wiradjuri Elder
- Tangerene Ingram - Parent
- Michelle Gemmell -
Aboriginal Educational
Assistant
- Steve O’Neill – Aboriginal
Educational Assistant
- Bruce Fisher – Deputy
Principal MAHS
- Tim Bowen – DEEWR
- Jason McPherson –
Regional Manager SNSW/
ACT
Already as part of the program
the Indigenous parents and
students travelled to Sydney to
experience an AFL game at the
Sydney Cricket Ground between
the Sydney Swans and Port
Adelaide Power. Parents were
given the opportunity to hold
the Swans Banner up, while
the students created a guard of
honour for the Swans as they
ran out onto the field. Further to
this, local Tristan Williams was
asked to be a junior mascot
for the Sydney Swans and run
out with the team through the
guard of honour and the banner.
Tristan was selected for good
behaviour during the trip.
You will see the
PACE program participants
conducting
a guard of honour
for the GIANTS as
they run out onto
the field against
Belconnen this Saturday.
Accompanying
the team will be
Ryan Ingram as the
team mascot.
The program is just getting
started and many discussion
groups, workshops and camps
are planned between now and
the end of the year. If you’re
PYKE THE DUAL
ATHLETE
8
Mike Pyke is certainly
showing his potential
after moving to
Australia in 2009 to
start his AFL career,
after representing
Canada in Rugby
Union.
When Pyke was handed the
opportunity to play with the
Swans he saw it as a step
forward in his sporting career
and jumped at the chance.
“I think it was just a great
opportunity to play a great
sport in a great country. It was
something that I wanted to do
that I did not want to regret not
trying later on in my life,”
Pyke said.
After being involved in the
sport for the past three years
he does see some difference
in representing your country
in Rugby Union and playing for
the Sydney Swans.
“It was a completely different
experience, obviously representing
your country is a very
special thing but it was equally
as special to have all your hard
work pay off trying to make my
transition into AFL.
It was a great feeling running
out onto the SCG for the
Richmond game in round six in
my first year,” Pyke said.
After debuting for the Swans
in 2009, he has since gone on
to play another 27 matches
and has scored 5 goals during
that time. Pyke
can see improvements
in his game
every week.
“I can see
improvements
every game which
is encouraging so
it does not really
matter if I am playing
in senior competition
or NEAFL it is great
just to be playing
AFL,” Pyke said.
Pyke tore his quad
when the Swans
Image: Slattery Media
played the Western Bulldogs
at Manuka Oval this year and
is returning for the first time
this weekend for the Swans
Reserves.
“I am just taking
it week by week,
hopefully I will get
through this week
and build on my
performance and
give myself a chance
to play the last
couple of rounds or
fortunately enough
in a final,” Pyke said.
With the return of Pyke the
Swans Reserves will be hoping
that they can win against
the Queanbeyan Tigers as the
finals draw closer.
With a new coach at
the helm Pyke is
hoping Henry Playfair
will lead them
into the finals.
“I think the work that coach
Playfair has put into the team
is helping, he is doing a great
job taking over the reins this
year and going towards the
finals we are taking it very
seriously” Pyke said.

GOOD WILL
GRIGGS
In what has been a
busy few weeks with
milestones at the
club, another one
will be reached this
weekend when one
of Queanbeyan’s
young guns, Will
Griggs, plays his
50th first grade
game for the club.
What makes this achievement
even more significant is that it
has occurred following Griggs
missing a full season of footy
a few years ago due to having
a serious knee injury. A sign
of his character says his Coach
Adrian Pavese.
“To be able to come back from
a serious knee injury the way
Will has is a testament to his
attitude and commitment to
wanting to playing footy at the
highest level,” Pavese said.
In what has been a tough year
for the club, a shining light
has been the performance of
Griggs. This season in diffcult
circumstances he has consistently
lead from the front and
played good footy. Griggs’ form
this year is a promising sign for
the future of the Tigers, which is
a real positive to take from this
season.
“We’re a young team, on the
up and we have a bright future
ahead,” Griggs said.
Coach Pavese has
been incredibly impressed
with Griggs’
form this season
saying “He works
hard, tackles hard
and never gives up.
Will has a big future
at this club.”
In what can be one of the best
acknowledgements from your
coach, Pavese also said “Griggs
could be a future captain of our
footy club.
He leads by example with his
footy.” When asked about this
Griggs said “we have a great
captain at the moment but
going forward it might be an
opportunity I would consider.”
In the mean time it’s important
to gain as much experience as
possible this season in order to
hit the ground running in 2012,
the Tigers will be ready to fight
from round one next year.
By Matthew Tucker
If football is a game
broken down into three basic
components; winning the ball,
using the ball, and getting it
back – then Dane Keenes is
doing it all.
He isn’t intimidated by
anyone, nor is he easily
flustered or concerned about
how he’s viewed. He’s just
a country kid eager to play
footy each week.
Keenes’ football
features some of
the best elements of
the Australian game
– aggression, skill,
strength and class
flowing through it.
It is credit to
20-year-old Keenes
that, in the past few
months he has let
his football do the
talking.
Quiet and reserved off the
field, Keenes’ persona change
once he runs onto the ground
is dramatic; morphing into the
hard nut midfielder he is now
known to be.
Keenes is the sort of player
whose genius lies in his
ability (and courage) to find,
win and then dispose of the
ball.
He can push a contested ball
into space for Eastlake’s
swarm of runners to pounce,
like a bloke opening a bag of
helium balloons and watching
them head skyward.
Such players make the
biggest difference.
He became the sort of player
who reads the game, works
the angles, finds space and
hunts the ball. And through
his hard work ethic, has
becoming better at performing
the skills he needed to be
that sort of player.
Keenes’ role at Eastlake has
been critical to its improvement
over the second half of
the season. He is an extractor
at stoppages, a clean centresquare
player who can also
force the ball forward under
pressure. He would keep his
feet in a raging river and his
tackles stick.
Although everyone
knows that winning
centre clearance is
critical, particularly
with the forward
press capable of
trapping the ball
inside 50, those who
are specialists
inside that space are
pivotal.
Still only young, Keenes
has played the majority of
the season in the seniors,
and is one of many players
responsible for securing
Eastlake a spot in the finals
come September.
10

IF FOOTBALL IS A GAME
BROKEN DOWN INTO THREE
BASIC COMPONENTS;
WINNING THE BALL, USING
THE BALL, AND GETTING IT
BACK THEN DANE KEENES
IS DOING IT ALL.

The club inducted five players
into their record books;
Third grader’s Heath Axelby
Grader’s Jeremy Walker
and Glenn Horsburgh and
Woman’s league player Mercia
having made their 100-game
milestone this year.
Smith has been at the Magpies
for ten years and believes the
fact that Belconnen recognises
milestones such as these and
for the ladies in the Woman’s
league it’s a great thing to
aspire to.
“It’s a milestone that not many
females that play football
would reach and I guess for me
… it’s good that the club has
these milestones ... so even if
you play football just for the
fun of it, it’s a milestone you
can reach without having to
be the best in the team or play
representative football,” Smith
said.
Smith, like so many others
at Belconnen, says she has
stayed with the Magpies
for a decade because of the
friendships she has built at the
club. “It’s a really great club to
be a part of,” Smith said.
Smith acknowledges that
without the support of the
Belconnen club, playing
woman’s football
would not be as
enjoyable.
“There is a lot of support
by the club which
you don’t often get in a
lot of female sports…
they involve the girls in
all their functions and
the support they give
the guys they try and
give the girls as well. But
just having a coach,
a trainer and a manager that
the club supports in their roles,
really makes being a player
easy and it makes showing up
and doing what you can easy as
well,” Smith said.
In other club news,
Belconnen have
launched their ‘Kick
in 4 Kippax’
fundraiser.
The club is looking
for larger sponsors
to donate to the Club
for help in making
the new Kippax Oval
just that little more
professional.
As a part of the redevelopment,
the club will receive a
new ground, dressing sheds,
canteen & kitchen facilities,
medical rooms and offices.
All of which will be funded by
the government. However,
there are many things which
the grant does not include:
coaches boxes and electronic
score boards for example will
need to be funded by the club
itself.
So get on board and chip in
to make your club the best it
can be.
UMPIRE PROFILE
Today we profile
Glen Swan or “G-bus”
as he is well known.
He looks after our
Green Shirt and 2nd
year Field umpires; up
to U/16’s.
An active member of the
coaching staff combined with
his NEAFL and AFL Canberra
umpiring commitments he is a
valuable team member of the
Umpiring Group.
His coaching is on developing
Field Umpires early skills and
introducing them to umpiring.
The support and encouragement
Swan gives is a testament to his
strong and welcoming character.
Swan is also Vice President
of the AFL Canberra Umpires
Association and can often be
seen assisting in many areas as
is needed.
Name: Glen Swan
Age: 30
Discipline and
number:
Field Umpire #39
What got you
involved in umpiring?
My Dad was a goal umpire
with the umpiring group in
Queensland. Dad went on to
umpire what was then VFL/
AFL reserves, and then he
became the club umpire for my
junior footy club in Brisbane.
During adolescence, I had some
time away from playing footy
due to reoccurring injuries. I
originally started umpiring as a
way to preserve match fitness.
However, once I got to university,
it also provided me with some
extra money to help me on my
way.
What made you
continue in umpiring?
Although I was playing football
throughout my teenage years
and my twenties, I always found
myself coming back to umpiring
for one reason or another. When
a knee reconstruction put an end
to my playing days, umpiring
was a way for me to keep giving
something to football. I really
enjoy running and being able
to contribute to the football
community.
What success have
you gained from
umpiring?
Self discipline; I have always
enjoyed training, but training
to umpire a game of Australian
football properly is a real mental
and physical challenge. I have
had to be self disciplined with my
approach to learning the laws
of the game, committing to a
training schedule and continuing
to challenge myself with
self-improvement strategies.
Additionally, I have a role
assisting with junior umpiring
development in Canberra. I get a
lot of enjoyment being involved
with the learning and development
of umpires who are new to
the game.
What is your ambition
in umpiring?
As long as the body cooperates I
aim to continue to umpire at the
highest level in accordance with
my capabilities.
A personal ambition is to trial for
AFL level football before 2013.
A football community ambition
is to continue to inspire young
umpires to stick with umpiring.
Would you recommend
umpiring to
your friends?
Yes, umpiring is great because it
provides so many opportunities
for personal development. A lot
of my friends are always looking
for ways to, for instance, train for
something. Umpiring is a great
way to stay involved with footy.

GIANTS v Belconnen
The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS will be looking
for their fifth win in a row this Saturday when they
take on the Belconnen Magpies at Robertson Oval in
Wagga at 12pm.
After defeating NT Thunder, Tuggeranong, the Sydney
Swans Reserves and Brisbane Lions Reserves,
the young guns are storming towards the NEAFL
finals with the club’s biggest ever winning streak.
Sheedy is spreading the GIANT word
GIANTS head coach Kevin Sheedy, along with a
number of GIANTS staff members was in the Central
West last week, spreading the club’s word around
our zone. The GIANTS were on a quest to find the
first AFL player from the area. Sheedy said that a
rousing welcome from 350 kids at St Marys Primary
dressed in orange and singing ‘Up there Cazaly’ was
something he has never experienced in his life.
QUEANBEYAN TIGERS
SYDNEY SWANS
By JOHN FORREST
The Tigers may have been defeated by NEAFL
Northern Conference team Southport but they were far
from disgraced. The young Tigers outfit gained plenty
of praise from their opponents as they battled the
game through to the final siren conceding goals in the
time on period of the third and fourth quarters which
blew the final score out in the Shark’s favour.
Southport fielded an experience team with a sprinkling
of former AFL, VFL and other players from major
leagues across Australia. In perfect conditions with
temperatures hovering around the 22 degree mark
they used their home ground (and the weather) to
advantage posting a 67 point win. They posted the
first three goals of the game - against the wind - and
looked likely to post a high score against the visiting
team. It was not to be.
The Club would like to express its sincere thanks to the
Southport Sharks for their hospitality during the day
(especially the after match refreshments) and to the
many supporters who travelled the distance to witness
the Tigers first ever competition match in Queensland.
A number of former premiership / grand final players
made the journey to witness the Tigers first ever
competition game in Queensland. They included:
Jamie Andriske, Michael Kennedy, Jason Gilbert, triple
Premiership Coach James Dore, Peter Bowyer, Chris
Davis, David Hunter and Tony Innaimo.
Our appreciation to the volunteers who also travelled
including Fred Gisik, Gary Bullivant, Chrissy Craven,
Doug Daniel, Michael Goiser, Pete Jensen, Wally
Thompson, Rowan Johnstone, Paul James, Danny
Rutten, Matt Napier and Ray Daniel – many at their
own expense. Also to our Queensland connections
- the Dickinsons, Jason Satchell and the family
members of Matt Napier who assisted on the day.
Special mention to the Officiating Umpires who
performed strongly throughout the game.
Congratulations to Michael Wescombe who played
his 150th Club game last Saturday. This is his second
milestone this year having played his 100th 1st
Grade game recently. He along with other milestone
achievers will be recognised at the Tigers 100 Club
function on 27 August along with members of the
1991 1st Grade premiership team attending the 20
year reunion.
