HAWKS STILL A
CHANCE...
The Tuggeranong
Hawks will have to
direct their focus
to next season after
all but drowning
their finals chances
– being demolished by
Eastlake last Sunday.
It was a must win game for the
Hawks, but they never looked
in it with the Demons running
them off their feet and eventually
winning by 20 goals – 10.12.72 to
29.18.192.
The interesting
question is: Where
to now for the
Hawks? They have
the bye this weekend
but then how do
they approach the
remaining two games
against Belconnen
and Queanbeyan?
The brown and yellow guernseys
are still mathematically in the
race for the nearly sealed fourth
spot. The chances are incredibly
slim and if they are to make
it they will have to win their
final two matches by massive
margins. They might have a good
chance considering the Magpies
and Tigers only have 4 wins
between them but the Hawks
would have to rely on Eastlake
suffering huge losses in their final
two games.
Coach Glenn Gorman decried
his team for not being hungry
enough against the Demons. And
really, the chance to make a mark
on the competition has passed.
There were missed opportunities
during the season and the Hawks
will have to pay the price for that.
If only they had managed to hold
on against Ainslie in round six
and Queanbeyan in round nine
it could be a different story now.
Gorman has said time and time
again that the key is belief -
Believe and you can win games.
This isn’t to say that the season
hasn’t been positive for
Tuggeranong.
They started
the year with
an aura of
confidence
after winning
some monumental
games towards
the end of 2010 and
continued that
attitude through
the preseason.
Their goal has been to make
the finals – it probably won’t
happen. But the young team
have built a foundation together
and will certainly build again for
next season.
Gorman believes there are still
some issues to work through.
He was adamant the Hawks
could have beaten Eastlake last
weekend and the team needs
to start asking themselves
questions about why they didn’t
and what is stopping the team
from performing.
They have to remember the pain
now and use it in 2012.
