LINE
In what has been a big week in footy, this week
saw AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou in Canberra for his
address at the National Press Club. Here he spoke
of the vision and future goals of the AFL and the
opportunities that lay in front of us all to grow our
great game. In a milestone only few have achieved,
Stafford Cooper will play his 250th first grade game
This weekend we see teams from the NEAFL
Eastern Conference travel to yet another city when
Ainslie hosts the Swans in Newcastle. This is a great
opportunity for not only these two teams but also the
Black Diamond Football League who have been great
with their assistance for this match. A good crowd is
expected for this top of the table clash.
AFL CANBERRA WAS ALSO FORTUNATE TO HAVE ANDREW
INTERVIEWED AT OUR WEEKLY MEDIA UPDATE AND FOR
THOSE WHO MAY HAVE MISSED IT ON WIN NEWS
WEDNESDAY NIGHT, THE INTERVIEW IS AVAILABLE ON AFL
CANBERRA’S YOUTUBE WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/AFLCANBERRA
in AFL Canberra this weekend when he runs out for
Eastlake. Along the way he has won the Mulrooney
Medal in 1998 and been named All-Australian on
three occasions. At 36, Cooper is still providing a solid
target up forward for Eastlake and no doubt the team
hope to topple the GIANTS this weekend to mark this
special occasion. Congratulations Stafford.
In what should be another close game the high flying
Hawks will play Queanbeyan at Greenway Oval. Only
percentage separates the two teams on the ladder
and after their come from behind win last week, no
doubt the Hawks will be looking to continue their
winning ways as Queanbeyan aim to get back on the
winners list. See you at the footy
COUNTRY TO
CANBERRA
By JOHN By John FORRESTER Forrester
Moving from the country to the city can be a stressful
affair but there is one player in the NEAFL who has done
it with minimum fuss.
Jackson Kew was recruited at the start of the season by
the Ainslie Football Club and has done well to establish
himself in the NEAFL team in his debut year.
The 18-year-old moved to Canberra this year in search
of a higher level of competition after growing up in
Coolamon near Wagga Wagga.
Growing up in the country town of Coolamon means
that it is pretty difficult to avoid playing football.
Kew was introduced to the game by his family, with his
father, who has been involved with the game most of
his life.
His father, Garry Kew, put Jackson into Auskick at such a
young age which has now led to the
young man having a strong passion for the game.
Garry Kew said that his son made the decision to
come to Canberra by himself, and that he thinks the
challenge the NEAFL represents was one of the
main reasons.
“HE’S A KID THAT LOVES HARD WORK
AND THRIVES ON A CHALLENGE… HIS
AIM IS TO PLAY AGAINST THE BEST
PLAYER ON THE OPPOSITION EVERY
WEEK, AND HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN
LIKE THAT.”
The increase in career opportunities in Canberra was
another factor in why Jackson Kew moved to Canberra.
After getting in touch with Ainslie and securing a place
within the team, the club helped the talented player
setup job interviews and find a place to live.
The young player said that being a part of such a great
club has helped him get used to his first year out
of home.
“Playing with Ainslie, I’ve met a lot of good blokes
and became mates with a lot of great people
which has really helped me settle in.”
Kew is modest about his future in the game and
just wants to take it week by week and year by year.
IN HIS FIRST YEAR WITH THE CLUB HIS
FOCUS IS PERFORMING AT HIS BEST
WHEN HE GETS THE OPPORTUNITY
AND HELPING HIS TEAM WIN.
JACKSON KEW HAS HAD A GREAT
START TO HIS NEAFL CAREER AND HAS
A PROMISING FUTURE AHEAD OF HIM
IN CANBERRA.
With his humble approach and strong work ethic,
there’s no telling what this kid from the country could
achieve in the game he loves.
HAWKS
By Joseph Prevedello
FLYING HIGH
TUGGERANONG HAWKS CAPTAIN ALEX
LAWDER SAYS THE HIS SIDE IS STARTING
TO FIND BELIEF AFTER THEIR BACK TO
BACK WINS, BUT ALSO ADDED THAT THE
SIDE SHOULD ‘STICK WITH IT’ AND NOT
BECOME COMPLACENT WITH THEIR
RECENT FORM.
The Hawks overcame a four goal deficit at three quarter
time to defeat Eastlake by four points last Saturday
night, while they knocked off Belconnen by a point in a
tough fought out match a week earlier.
Captain Lawder, who was injured in the game against
the Belconnen Magpies, believes the consecutive
victories have given the Hawks a morale boost.
“The spirits around the club are a lot higher and it’s
amazing what a couple of wins can do for confidence,”
Lawder said.
“Apart from our loss against Sydney, we really have
had a serious chance in all our games…its gone from
believing we can [win] to actually doing it.”
Lawder explained that all of the younger and newer
members of the team had the belief instilled that they
‘truly belong’ in the group.
“It can be a big step from playing elsewhere or in the
reserves to moving into the senior team and performing
well regularly…we’ve talked about it a bit and knowing
you belong helps the team perform better as a unit.
“We can only be thinking about each game from week
to week, we haven’t conquered anything yet, its only
two wins.”
Hawks NEAFL coach, Glenn Gorman echoed his captain
saying the club had received a great lift and the wins,
particularly the one over Eastlake came from a whole
team contribution.
“There were some great individual performances and
Dave Smith was great all day…Zeke Lamb played down
back in the first three quarters but we brought him
forward in the last and he kicked some crucial goals…
but really there weren’t too many passengers, it was
great,” Gorman said.
The coach is pleased that many of the players are
starting to hit some good form and are hoping it
continues when the Hawks take on the Queanbeyan
Tigers.
“They are a bit similar to us really; they have a young
list and have put in a couple of good performances
including beating Belconnen.
“This is a game we’ll really be geared up for, we’ve had
a depleted list and we’ll be getting a few players back
for it.”
Gorman said the Hawks will have to be on guard to
contain Queanbeyan forward, James Kavanagh who
Gorman regards as probably the best forward in the
league, as well as on-baller Mitch Daniher.
In the AFL Canberra competition, Queanbeyan have
always been the odd ones out as their home was
technically out of Canberra.
But one trip to the lovely Dairy Farmers Park is enough
to change anyone’s opinion on that matter.
It is a homely feel.
Walking around the boundary line you see the change
rooms, sitting side by side, with the umpires rooms
further right.
Above is the grandstand, stably supported with a roof
over the top, easily being able to accommodate 70-80
people.
At the very top sit the coaches’ boxes, the best possible
view of the oval with an eagle eye perspective of the
game as it is being played.
To the left, the most unique feature is the
Legend’s Stand.
It is a vintage style, little shack with the most loyal of
followers sitting atop screaming passionately for their
home team.
It’s a true family footy club.
THE TIGERS HOME GROUND WAS
DEVELOPED IN THE LATE SEVENTIES
AFTER A PROPOSAL WAS FORWARDED TO
THE QUEANBEYAN CITY COUNCIL BY THE
CLUB’S THEN PRESIDENT, LEN PETERSON
IN 1972.
Since then, the club has contributed over $800,000 to
the ground along with government grants and support
from sponsors including major sponsor Dairy Farmers to
become one of the most picturesque grounds in the AFL
Canberra and NEAFL competitions.
Ron Fowlie, General Manager of the Queanbeyan Tigers
Football Club says there are new plans for upgrading the
ground in the near future.
He says that keeping a professional environment is
important when clubs are looking for respect from their
opponents.
“WE HAVE PLANS TO UPGRADE THE
CURRENT GRANDSTAND TO INCLUDE
MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS TO THE VISITORS
CHANGE ROOMS, PROVIDE DISABLED
ACCESS TO THE GRANDSTAND AND
TOILET FACILITIES, PROVISION OF A
NEW UMPIRES ROOM AND GENERAL
UPGRADE OF OTHER FACILITIES IN THE
COMPLEX.”
HE SAID THAT THE CLUB WAS NOW
CONSIDERED TO BE A “BOUTIQUE
GROUND THAT PEOPLE ENJOY COMING
TO WATCH THE FOOTY AT”.
A problem that the ground has faced in recent years is
its role as a retention basin for the overflow of water
(after heavy rains) from the nearby residential area of
Karabar, Thornton’s Estate and Cooks Estate.
On a number of occasions the ground becomes flooded
as the water is retained by a stone dam wall at one end
of the ground which eventually dissipates water slowly
into a complicated drainage system under the surface of
the ground.
The ground floods so quickly there is little time to move
items from the ground. On one particular flooding
in the early eighties a number of players had parked
their cars in the ground close to the Grandstand. They
were underwater within minutes of the downpour and

subsequently were removed by tow trucks.
Witnesses have actually seen one young adventurer row
a canoe across the ground when in flood.
Last year after a freak downpour the oval turned in to
a raging river and according to Fowlie this used to be a
frequent occurrence.
“Maybe in the past this used to happen quite a bit. But
the ground drains reasonably well. Given
nowadays we don’t see much rain
it is a very rare event
now.”
Given that last year’s
flooding happened in
February, the ground had
adequate time to recover
and ended up being in
perfect condition for the
start of the season – thanks
very largely to the free
watering it got from Mother
Nature.
But back to the present,
the planned upgrades for
Queanbeyan’s boutique little
ground will hopefully happen
soon, there are just a couple
of areas that need to be seen
to by the club to ensure all goes
smoothly.
Ron Fowlie said that action was
being taken by the Tigers to get the
ball rolling.
“ASSISTANCE FROM LOCAL
COUNCIL PLUS GRANTS
FROM STATE AND FEDERAL
GOVERNMENT(S) ALONG
WITH FUNDING FROM THE
AFL ARE CURRENTLY BEING
SOUGHT TO ASSIST WITH
THE PROJECT.”
With these and more improvements for the club on the
horizon, it is a very exciting time to be around Tiger
Town.
And if they continue their early season form, finals
football will not be very far away for this family club.

ON A DAY WHERE ISRAEL FOLAU KICKED HIS FIRST EVER GOAL
AND FINISHED THE DAY WITH FOUR, IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE THAT
SOMEONE COULD HAVE STOLEN THE SPOTLIGHT FROM THE
FORMER RUGBY LEAGUE STAR BUT THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT ADAM
FLAGG DID.
Only seventeen-years-old, Flagg booted five goals and worked tirelessly in the GIANTS 41-point win over
Queanbeyan at Blacktown Olympic Park last weekend.
The tall forward presented all day and out-marked a number of experienced
Tigers opponents.
Flagg said he wanted to make up for failing to capitalise on ample
opportunities when the GIANTS met the Brisbane Lions Reserves in
Round seven of the NEAFL.
“I really wanted to improve after letting so many chances slide and
I was lucky enough to get a dream start and kick three in the first
quarter,” Flagg said.
“My confidence was pretty high so I just had to focus on maintaining
it for the rest of the game.”
Still in year 12 at St Ignatius College in Sydney, Flagg admitted it
has been hard for him to cope with a full study load as well as his
footy commitments.
“I try and get to the training sessions as much as I can but
with school and footy, it’s pretty hard trying to balance
them,” Flagg said.
8

“I get a bit of extra support, like tutoring but when
you have time to study you just have to make it count,
otherwise it won’t happen.
“When you’ve got a lot of good people around you, it
makes everything a lot easier.”
Two of those good people are Adam’s mother and
father who live on a drought-afflicted farm in the small
northern Riverina community of Ardlethan which is
about a 6 hour drive west of Sydney.
“Dad couldn’t make it today but he would have loved
to and mum is a big fan of the GIANTS Facebook page,”
he said.
“They’re both right behind me and it has made my time
here a lot easier.”
Flagg was spotted by the GIANTS playing for the
Under 16’s NSW/ACT RAMS in last year’s national AFL
carnival which he will attend this year in the RAMS
Under 18’s side.
WHEN ASKED HOW IT FELT TO
FINISH THE GAME WITH ONE
MORE GOAL THAN FOLAU,
FLAGG LAUGHED AND ONLY
HAD PRAISE FOR HIS 22-YEAR-
OLD TEAMMATE.
“IZZY DID REALLY WELL AND
WHEN HE KICKED HIS FIRST
GOAL EVERY PLAYER GOT
AROUND HIM WHICH WAS
GREAT,” HE SAID.
Dylan Shiel, Alex Carey, Stephen Clifton and
Folau were other standouts for the GIANTS
while Toby Conroy, Mitch Heaslip, Tim
Cook and James Kavanagh were among
Queanbeyan’s best.
“It was a team effort, we came
together and all the boys
getting around me and
saying I had a good
game made me feel
pretty good,”
Flagg said.
Meanwhile, 16-year-old Jake Neade showed plenty
of promise in only his second game for the GIANTS
against much larger bodies.
The young player said he was satisfied with his game
and was happy his team came away with the win.
“I’m pretty happy with how I played and the coach
looked happy after the game which is always good,”
Neade said.
HAILING FROM THE SMALL
COMMUNITY OF ELLIOTT WHICH
IS ALMOST SMACK-BANG IN
THE MIDDLE OF DARWIN AND
ALICE SPRINGS, NEADE PLANS
TO CONTINUE IMPROVING HIS
FOOTBALL SKILLS.
“HOPEFULLY I GET A BIT
MORE EXPERIENCE TRAINING
AGAINST BIGGER BODIES AND
CAN BECOME A BIT MORE OF
AN ATTACKING PLAYER,”
NEADE SAID.
“I get inspiration from Cyril Rioli, his pressure and
hard-ball-gets, and when he gets the ball he always
does something with it.”
Round nine of the AFL was the Indigenous Round
and with Lance Franklin kicking six, Andrew Krakouer
and Leon Davis in full flight for the Magpies and
Travis Varcoe tearing it up on Friday night, it was a
great weekend to acknowledge and view how much
Indigenous Australians give to Australian football.
Neade said he wanted to acknowledge former Essendon
great Michael Long and GIANTS coach Kevin Sheedy for
everything they have done for Indigenous footballers.
“Without Sheeds and Michael they wouldn’t have the
Indigenous Round,”
The GIANTS win over Queanbeyan has moved them
to third on the NEAFL ladder behind Ainslie and the
undefeated Sydney Swans Reserves.
NEAFL ARTICLE
By JOHN FORRESTER
By Natasha Lorenz
THE SWANS ACADEMY IS IN ITS
INAUGURAL YEAR AND ALREADY THERE
ARE 410 PLAYERS REGISTERED TO THE
SEVEN CENTRAL AND NORTHERN NSW
ACADEMIES. SOME OF THE ACADEMY
PLAYERS ARE BEING USED AS TOP UP
PLAYERS FOR THE SWANS RESERVES
AFTER 103 WERE USED IN THE RESERVES
LAST YEAR. TALENT IDENTIFICATION
AND OPERATIONS MANAGER OF THE
SWANS ACADEMY, CHRIS SMITH KNOWS
THAT USING THE ACADEMY PLAYERS
AS TOP UPS EACH WEEK ALLOWS THE
SWANS TO BUILD ON THEIR TEAM.
“What we needed to provide to the better boys was an
ongoing and meaningful program. By allowing them
to play in the actual competition on an ongoing basis
not only provides real benefits to these kids but it also
helps our team as well, it helps with our structures,
with our game plan,” Smith said.
One reason the Academies were set up was because of
the dwindling numbers of players being recruited out
of NSW and Queensland. It may take some time for
the numbers to improve in NSW and Queensland with
only eight percent of listed AFL players coming from
the two states, though the Swans are hoping with the
introduction of the Academies the numbers will change.
“It is roughly just under three percent who come from
NSW. The idea for us is that both the GIANTS and the
Sydney Swans work together, we believe that if we
can introduce these Academy programs and be very
successful at it, we should be able to see considerable
improvements or introductions of NSW and Queensland
kids into the AFL system,” Smith said.
THE ACADEMIES ARE BASED IN
NON-TRADITIONAL AFL STATES TO
SHOWCASE THE SPORT. THE SWANS
CONDUCTED TRIALS LAST YEAR FOR
BOYS AGED BETWEEN 11-18 YEARS TO
HAVE THE CHANCE TO BE SELECTED IN
THE SWANS ACADEMY.
“The idea is to provide these kids with elite coaching
and elite training environments
together with top range
football programs in the
hope of fast tracking these
boys in to becoming the
AFL players of tomorrow.
The boys still participate in
their club football and club
football training but the added
Academy provides them with
formal hours that we believe
they need prior to their draft
age,” Smith said.
The Swans Academy is a new
program with Academies based
in different regions across NSW.
10

The Swans Academy allows the young athletes to
participate in training for 22 weeks twice a week where
they are guided by experienced coaches employed by
the Swans.
“I think it is important that we do provide the
opportunity for as many gifted kids as possible. The hope
is if we can give them a good program for six to seven
years something above and beyond they would have
normally done,” Smith said.
There is a big margin between players from NSW and
Queensland and prominent AFL states. Smith knows
that the better players will have to be found through
the draft but hopes to even out the numbers with the
introduction of the Academies.
“IT IS NOT NECESSARILY AN ADVANTAGE
THAT WE ARE AFTER; BASICALLY
IT IS A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD. YOU
LOOK AT YOUR BRISBANE, GOLD
COAST, THE GIANTS AND THE SYDNEY
SWANS, NEARLY 80% OF OUR LIST ARE
PREDOMINANTLY MADE OF PLAYERS
FROM INTERSTATE, WHERE THE OTHER
SOUTHERN TEAMS, THE TEAMS IN SOUTH
AUSTRALIA AND WESTERN AUSTRALIA,
80% OF THEIR LIST ARE MADE UP OF
LOCAL TALENT,” SMITH SAID.
The Sydney Swans Reserves travel to Newcastle to take
on reigning premiers Ainslie in a top of the table clash.
It is sure to be a draw card for the locals with young
Academy players from the Northern Academy regions
playing for the Swans Reserves as top up players. The
players include Mitch Crawford and Jack Pratt from the
Hunter Academy, Jonathan Gourlay from the Central
Coast Academy and Brendan Nelson from the Coffs
Harbour Academy. This is sure to give locals a look at
how the Academies can produce some young AFL stars
out of NSW.
CELEBRATIONS
ALL ROUND
By
Lucy Hinchey
By JOHN FORRESTER
Chris McDevitt had two reasons to smile last week.
Wife Sharee gave birth to the couple’s second child
only days before he played his 200th game for the
Belconnen Magpies. It goes without saying which
was the greater achievement but nevertheless a close
second was his footballing milestone.
Playing alongside him last week against Ainslie was
Chris Calvert. Best mate, best man, and business
partner, “he’s made it back into the 1st grade side
now so it’s nice to have him there for my 200th”
McDevitt said.
MCDEVITT IS A COMPETITIVE
AND PASSIONATE FOOTBALL
PLAYER WHO, BECAUSE OF WORK
COMMITMENTS LAST YEAR, PLAYED
IN THE PREMIERSHIP WINNING
DIVISION THREE SIDE. TAKING ON
CO-OWNERSHIP OF AN ELECTRICAL
COMPANY WITH CALVERT, ALONG WITH
HAVING A YOUNG FAMILY, MCDEVITT
DECIDED TO PLAY DOWN A FEW
GRADES WITH HIS MATES BEFORE
THEY RETIRED.
This year he is back with the NEAFL side and admits
finding time to make all three training sessions a
week is difficult.
“It’s always a bit of a juggle especially now with the
business. You can’t just leave jobs half-finished if
they’re running late. The coaching group has moulded
around what I can and can’t do and they’ve been
very good to talk to about that sort of stuff,”
McDevitt said.
NEAFL coach Michael Horne says that although
McDevitt may not be able to make every training
session he’s not worried about that impacting on
his ability to perform every week. “He’s always been
a player who is quite fit and able to maintain that
himself” Horne said.
This year with so many new faces in the Belconnen
side, Horne really appreciates McDevitt’s experience
and contribution to the side. Playing consistently all
season, Horne sees McDevitt as a “very valuable part
of our team.”
Making the 200 milestone may not compare with
the McDevitt families new addition,
however the father of two says
that he loves the club and this is
something special. “I’ve always
worked really hard at football
so to get a milestone like this is
something I hold quite high as a
personal achievement,” McDevitt
said.
When asked what he will do with
himself at the end of the season,
McDevitt admits that with a
growing family it will make
things tough but he ‘certainty’
doesn’t think he’ll be retiring
- “I don’t know what I’ll do
with myself if I can’t play
footy” he said.
COOPER GEARS UP
FOR 250TH GAME By Matthew Tucker
Stafford Cooper plays his 250th AFL Canberra match
on Saturday, but the Demon champion says he
derives more satisfaction from the experiences he’s
gained over a long career than reaching numerical
milestones.
“EASTLAKE HAS BEEN ABSOLUTELY
FANTASTIC TO ME AND I HAVE REALLY
ENJOYED MY TIME AT THE CLUB.
WHEN I’M LOOKING BACK AT MY DAYS
PLAYING FOOTBALL I’LL HAVE GREAT
MEMORIES OF MY TIME AT EASTLAKE.”
“It may sound like a bit of a cliché, but I haven’t
thought about it much,” Cooper said. “It’s just a
privilege to play at Eastlake and whether it’s 250
games, 100 games or whatever, to have been here for
as long as I have, has just been a remarkable journey
and experience.
“I’ve met some amazing people and I couldn’t
have asked for anything more in my career. I’ve
had injuries, I’ve lost grand finals, I’ve had down
points but I wouldn’t change a thing because it’s an
amazing place. If I could do it all again and go back
to the start and do it again I would.”
But Cooper’s resume stretches far beyond his humble
outlook - with a Mulrooney Medal, being named
All-Australian three times at the Australian Country
Football Championships, 5 Best and Fairest’s and 4
R/U Best and Fairest’s.
The Demons face a tough task in toppling the rising
young GIANTS team, who will be gunning for a big
win against Eastlake. Eastlake’s cause hasn’t been
helped with major injuries within the senior playing
group, but Cooper remains confident ahead of the
clash.
“Obviously not the start to the season that we
were looking for,” Cooper said. “The team is staying
positive and we are working hard on the things that
we can control. There’s been a real focus this week to
get the little things right and if we can manage to do
that and churn out four quality quarters of football
we’ll be tough to beat on any given weekend.”
With Cooper’s milestone, the Demons will have
plenty to play for, but Cooper says emotion itself
wouldn’t be enough to get the job done.
“You’ve still got to go out and do what you normally
do. I think we’ve got maybe a wave of emotion that’s
going to help us but it’s more than that. You’ve got
to get out and play hard football and emotion only
goes so far.”
Despite all of Cooper’s individual honours, he still
has zero premierships next to his name, which cuts
deep. This weekend will be a great test to the entire
Eastlake NEAFL team, and will be sure to separate the
pretenders from the contenders.
PREPARING
FOR PERFORMANCE
By JOHN FORRESTER
Each week Field, Boundary and Goal umpires go out
and officiate matches they are appointed to. How
does this happen and what does an umpire do at
NEAFL from one match to the other
Umpires are required to be at their NEAFL match 90
minutes prior to schedule start time, where they will
start to prepare for their match day.
Once paperwork is organised, teams are met,
pre-game discussion with their respective Coach
and other officiating umpires has taken place; it’s
onto the ground.
They complete their after match paperwork including
any reports or referrals, warm down, receive
feedback from the match day umpires coach and
like players begin for the next week.
EACH UMPIRE RECEIVES A DVD OR
DOWNLOAD COPY OF THEIR MATCH
JUST COMPLETED SO THEY CAN GO
HOME AND ANALYSE THEIR MATCH
AND PROVIDE SELF ASSESSMENT.
Appointments are released each Monday afternoon
for the following weekend’s matches.
The challenge with the NEAFL Panel is around half
are split between Sydney and Canberra, so to help
with the process a dedicated coaching website has
been set up.
The umpires then provide feedback with each other,
where they give some points on the game to share
with the whole umpiring group.
They will receive detailed written and visual feedback
on their performance from the Umpire Coach on
each decision made in the game and various skills
that are required to perform in the NEAFL.
THERE ARE TWO ORGANISED
TRAINING SESSIONS HELD EACH
WEEK WHERE FITNESS AND SKILLS
PRACTICE TAKES PLACE AT
MANUKA OVAL.
On Thursday nights the NEAFL Field Umpires Panel
meets via teleconference and discusses vision and
how they can improve for the coming match.
Each umpire discipline has dedicated coaches
who are out at every NEAFL match, to help with
improving umpire performance, they themselves
compile a detailed run sheet and then review every
match on DVD.
The coach then provides this information back to
each umpire they observed from the weekend.
This happens week in week out of the football
season and every umpire strives to improve their
individual and team performance in much the same
way as the players.
Umpiring is a great way to be involved in AFL or give
back to the game if you so desire.
UMPIRING IS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR
MORE PEOPLE TO BE INVOLVED AND
IS ACTIVELY RECRUITING FIELD
UMPIRES; WE WELCOME DAD’S,
MUM’S, BROTHERS, SISTERS, FORMER
PLAYERS, FORMER UMPIRES OR
ANYONE WITH AN INTEREST IN AFL.
Any one wishing to umpire please contact Jock
AINSLIE
With Ainslie travelling to Newcastle this weekend
there is no organised after-match function. Awards
will be presented after the game. The Division 2 team
is currently sitting on top of the ladder and this week
has a well earned bye. The Under 18’s are coming off
a loss to Belconnen and have another testing game
against Marist at Ainslie Oval.
Ainslie are pleased to support the NEAFL and the
Sydney Swans with the movement of the Ainslie v
Sydney clash to Newcastle. Ainslie 2010 Premiership
Coach Chris Rourke is also taking part in the Sydney
Swans football forum held the night before the game
to help with the development of football in
the region.
The Club would like to congratulate Danielle Curcio a
member of the Ainslie Women’s team who last week
played her 100th game for Ainslie. Dani is the first
Women’s team member to bring up the 100 Club
games. Dani has won the Club Best and Fairest and
been a member of the ACT representative team during
her 10 years in the game. In 2007 Dani was selected
in the Team of the Decade.
In Round 10 Ainslie NEAFL team have a bye. On
Saturday June 4 an Ainslie All Stars team consisting
of the Club’s past Legends, current Senior and Junior
Coaching staff and Board members will take on a
combined Under 18’s, Womens and Thirds team at
Ainslie Oval. This will follow the Division 2 game
against Gungahlin played at 11.30am. All other teams
have a bye.
The Red, White and Black Ball will be held at the
AF&SC on Saturday 9th July. Player registration
includes 1 ticket to the Ball. Extra tickets can be
booked through Reception at the Club. Table bookings
can also be organised at Reception.
SYDNEY SWANS
This Saturday’s match between the Swans Reserves
and Ainslie marks the first ever NEAFL match played
in the Hunter region.
The match will further strengthen the Swans ties with
the Newcastle region, which have been boosted by
the recent establishment of the QBE Sydney Swans
Academy in the Hunter.
In a fillip for the Academy and local Australian
football, four boys from the three northern QBE
Sydney Swans Academy centres will play for the
Swans reserves in Newcastle.
The four boys are Mitch Crawford and Jack Pratt
from Newcastle, who are in the QBE Sydney Swans
Hunter Academy, Jonathan Gourlay who is in the QBE
Sydney Swans Central Coast Academy and Brendan
Nelson from the QBE Sydney Swans Academy in Coffs
Harbour.
The head coach of the QBE Sydney Swans Academy,
Paul Roos, said it would be a great opportunity for
the four Academy players to show their wares in front
of local AFL football fans.
“All the boys have been training hard as part of their
program with the Academy and we’re excited to be
able to give them this chance to play with the Swans
reserves and put their talent on display,’’ Roos said.
EASTLAKE DEMONS
Eastlake ventured to Greenway Oval last weekend for
the clash with Tuggeranong. The Under 18’s provided
a fantastic start to the day with a strong 26 point
win. The Reserves continued the winning start to the
day and recorded an excellent performance. The 89
point win was a welcome result for the Reserves and
it was encouraging to see the boys kick 21 goals for
the match.
That was where the wins stopped. Tuggeranong
defeated the Seniors in what turned out to be a tight
match. It was played in good spirit and a real contest
in the end. The 4 point margin was difficult to take
for the players and there is no doubt they will bounce
back.
The Club is looking forward to the challenge against
the GIANTS. There is little doubt the GIANTS look like
a tough opponent, but facing Eastlake on the rebound
is making for a massive game.
Coinciding with the match is the 20th Anniversary
of the Eastlake and Manuka merger and the club
has people travelling in from around Australia and
internally that will provide plenty of support at the
game. With over 200 people attending the Club Ball
on Saturday night, the support for the Club is staying
strong.
On the Club front, Eastlake is delighted to welcome
Philippa Zahara to the Management Team. Philippa
will be managing the evergrowing function business
at Eastlake and can be contacted on 6228 0999 for
any Function enquiries. With the ability to cater
for groups from 10 to 200, Eastlake is providing a
wonderful facility to many Government, Corporate
and Private groups.
In what will be an exciting week for the Club, we
are looking forward to a bumper crowd at Manuka
on Saturday. The interest in the game will flow well
beyond the scoreline with the Bruce brothers, Aaron
and Josh, going head to head, along with challenge
of the talented GWS Giants up against the Eastlake
players ready to reignite their season.
GWS GIANTS
The GIANTS are making their mark in the ACT and
are giving you the chance to make your Mark on the
GIANTS ACT guernsey for 2012.
Time is running out to get involved in the Make Your
Mark Competition and design or suggest the symbol
that you think should represent the ACT on the
GIANTS home Guernsey in 2012.
We’ve had some amazing entries so far but with only
two weeks left to get your entries in, the website
looks a little bit different this week.
If you want to enter but find it hard to draw your
design, you can still get involved by telling us what
you think the symbol should be in 50 words or less.
The best five entries will win five double passes to the
first GIANTS AFL game in the ACT.
If you’ve already entered and want to show everyone
what you can do, jump online and ‘like’ or ‘tweet’
your entries to spread the word and encourage people
to vote for you in the Canberra Times. Voting opens
in June.
Jump on the GIANTS website and check out what
Canberran GIANT Josh Bruce thinks the symbol should
be and watch him try to draw it in the ‘how do I
enter’ section.
Time to get creative, entries in the design competition
close at 5pm June 2 and entries in the comments
competition close at 5pm June 25.
TUGGERANONG HAWKS
What a great win by the Hawks last Saturday night.
To come from behind and defeat Eastlake was a sign
on the boy’s fitness and confidence. The night fixture
proved successful with a good crowd braving the
cooler night air. Lucky it wasn’t raining. Young Sean
Kelly proved he is worthy of senior footy with a goal
in the last quarter to help put the Hawks in front,
Eastlake came back with a goal, the Hawks kicked
another and then a few points to end up winning by
4 points.
Unfortunately the reserves weren’t able to match
Eastlake and the U18’s went down as well in a
game they should have won. Div 3 suffered a loss to
Murrumbidgee but the Div 4 boys managed a win
over Murrumbidgee.
Congratulations to Daniel Johnson for playing his
100th senior game two weeks ago against Belconnen.
DJ always leads by example on the field, a true
club man and well respected amongst his peers.
Congratulations also to Ben Cleaver, James McCabe
and Sean Ellis for playing 100 club games recently
and to Glenn Currie for playing 150 club games.
HAWKFIELD CUP Sat 4th June
All members, supporters and players are invited to a
night at the races for the Hawkfield Cup. 7:00pm at
the Southern Cross Club Tuggeranong
Tickets are $12 for members, $15 for non members
and $15 at the door. For more info check out
the event on the Hawks Facebook page or email
1986 Grand Final Reunion
The Hawks are currently planning for a reunion
function to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the
1986 Premiership. Keep and eye on the website,
facebook page and club communication.
All members and supporters are welcome to join the
players for after match presentations on Sunday night
after the Queanbeyan game at 6.30pm at Southern
Cross Club, Tuggeranong
QUEANBEYAN TIGERS
Volunteers
Thanks to all our volunteer staff that assisted last
weekend with games in Sydney and Canberra on the
one day. We would also like to acknowledge Mal
Prentice and Peter Newham who travelled the Hume
Highway to call the game live on QBN FM 96.7.
Results
Mixed results last weekend with a determined
Tigers NEAFL team eventually going down to a more
polished GWS team at Blacktown. Our Reserves
and Under 18 Grades had comfortable wins over
Gungahlin although the Jets provided stiff opposition
for “Pavs” team.
Our Ladies have equalled last year’s wins with
a resounding defeat of the ADFA girls at the
Queanbeyan Park on Sunday. Well done to
all concerned.
Today we take on the ever improving Tuggeranong
Hawks in all three grades at artic park. There are
many similarities between the two clubs. Over recent
years there have been some tremendous contests at
senior level which have resulted in numerous games
going down to the final minutes of the final quarter.
Expect no different today.
Heritage Round.
The Tigers are reverting back to the Combine Jumper
for the Heritage Round match against Eastlake on 31
July at Dairy Farmers Park. The “combine” were a
most successful team during the period 1952 to 1956
and wore the Collingwood black and white vertical
striped jumper with a yellow sash.
The team became known as the combine when the
Queanbeyan Park was unavailable for training due
to an upgrade, forcing the Tigers to move across the
border to train. Acton Football Club was struggling
with on field performances and had been relegated
to second grade. The two clubs combined to form
the Queanbeyan / Acton Combine with the Tigers
supplying 90% of the players from which they
played in five consecutive grand finals for three
premierships. The combine also won two reserve
grade premiership titles as well as a third grade title.
The Club was the first to win all three in the same
year being 1953.
