York, and A&E Architects, Missoula<br />

and Billings, have developed conceptual<br />

drawings for the 33,000-square-foot<br />

building, to be located on the north edge<br />

<strong>of</strong> campus. With space for exhibitions<br />

and educational programs and almost<br />

10,000 square feet <strong>of</strong> climate-controlled<br />

storage, its placement will make it the<br />

gateway to campus.<br />

“Our goal is to create a home for the<br />

collection that <strong>of</strong>fers the best stewardship<br />

for the works <strong>of</strong> art,” says Koostra. “We<br />

are caretakers <strong>of</strong> a great asset that belongs<br />

not only to the <strong>University</strong> but also to the<br />

state and beyond.”<br />

Rudy Autio headed the<br />

ceramics area <strong>of</strong> UM’s<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Fine Arts for 28<br />

years. His career is<br />

marked by international<br />

achievement and<br />

recognition. <strong>The</strong> Finnish<br />

designers organization,<br />

Ornamo, elected him an<br />

honorary member, and<br />

in 1981 he was named first<br />

recipient <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Montana</strong><br />

Governor’s Arts Award. A<br />

<strong>Montana</strong> native and<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor emeritus, Autio<br />

died in 2007.<br />
