Desk iscomprised of mainly poplar secondary wood andexhibits blind dovetail top construction. Thefitted interior features upper pigeon holedrawers with molded fronts and stepped andshaped side drawers. A central shell carvedprospect door is flanked by two vertical reededpull out drawers locked by a wooden slideunder one of two drawers in the interiorprospect. Four graduated lower section drawersare flanked by reeded quarter columns. Retainsoriginal ogee bracket feet. Several of thedrawers exhibit pencil markings, along drawingof feet, and evidence of an early paper label.The slightly wider book case, backboards,woods, and construction techniques indicate thebookcase top is not original to the desk. 94 1/2"H x 43 3/4" W x 23" D. Central arched corniceabove large mirror flanked by two rectangularmirrors, all supported by carved pilasters, overa double pedestal base with three large drawersover two doors. The right pedestal door opens toreveal a large pull out drawer once fitted withbottle dividers. The left pedestal cupboard has apull out shelf. The sideboard is covered withelaborate and deeply carved botanical motifsincluding corn, grapes, kumquats, pears, wheat,acorns, and various other fruits, with thedrawers having a running grapevine motif. Thesideboard retains its original mirrors, notpictured. 115" H x 132" W x 37" D.Continental, last half 19th century. Provenance:purchased in the mid 20th century from aEuropean castle by country music personalitiesJohnny and <strong>June</strong> Carter Cash. It was used intheir Hendersonville, Tennessee home and laterdisplayed in the "House of Cash" museum untilits closure.
