Biography: Born into a privileged class ofRussian Society, David Burliuk became acentral figure in the history of the Russianavant-garde movement as an accomplished poet,art critic, and exhibition organizer. He studiedat the Kazan School of <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Art</strong>s in 1898, thenin Odessa, Moscow, Munich, and in Paris at theEcole des Beaux <strong>Art</strong>s, however, as a breaker ofartistic tradition, he found himself expelledfrom the Moscow Institute in 1911. His earlyworks were fauve-like and were exhibited withthe Blue Riders in Munich. With the advent ofWorld War I, he left Russia and traveled forfour years.
