Biography: Born into a privileged class ofRussian Society, David Burliuk became acentral figure in the history of the Russianavant-garde movement as an accomplished poet,art critic, and exhibition organizer. He studiedat the Kazan School of Fine Arts in 1898, thenin Odessa, Moscow, Munich, and in Paris at theEcole des Beaux Arts, however, as a breaker ofartistic tradition, he found himself expelledfrom the Moscow Institute in 1911. His earlyworks were fauve-like and were exhibited withthe Blue Riders in Munich. With the advent ofWorld War I, he left Russia and traveled forfour years.
