LeggettGrassl<strong>and</strong>s represent the majority of the world’sagricultural area <strong>and</strong> hold 20 percent of theworld’s soil <strong>carbon</strong> stockGrassl<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g rangel<strong>and</strong>s, shrub l<strong>and</strong>, pasture l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> cropl<strong>and</strong>sown with pasture, trees <strong>and</strong> fodder crops, represent 70 percent of theworld’s agricultural area.Grassl<strong>and</strong>s are an irreplaceable source oflivelihoods <strong>and</strong> food security <strong>for</strong> the poorPoverty <strong>and</strong> economic marg<strong>in</strong>alization often characterize the humancommunities manag<strong>in</strong>g grassl<strong>and</strong>s. Livestock keep<strong>in</strong>g is a source of <strong>in</strong>come<strong>and</strong> basis <strong>for</strong> food security <strong>for</strong> more than 1 billion people – or one-thirdof the poor <strong>in</strong> rural areas – <strong>and</strong> is also the only potential source of <strong>in</strong>comethat can be derived from many grassl<strong>and</strong> areas (see figure A). In addition,grassl<strong>and</strong>s are a source of goods <strong>and</strong> services such as wild food, energy <strong>and</strong>wildlife habitat. They also provide <strong>carbon</strong> <strong>and</strong> water storage, recreation <strong>and</strong>watershed protection <strong>for</strong> many major river systems.52Integrated Crop Management
