Background:Steve Saint, son of missionary pilot Nate Saint, founded I-TEC (Indigenous People’s Technologyand Education Center) in order to enable indigenousbelievers, like those among the Waodani tribewhom his parents served, to care for the physicaland spiritual needs of their own people rather thanbe dependent on outsiders. In remote, undevelopedareas - where roads are few and far betweenand waterways are only sometimes navigable -efficient, simple, and affordable transportation isone of those needs. The solution? A flying car.Project Goal:This year the Powered Parachute senior design team’sultimate goal is to support I-TEC in researching, calculating, and monitoring the fatigue and/or wear life ofvarious components of the Maverick. The componentsanalyzed will include bearings in the drive trainand welds on the frame, suspension, or enginemounts.Project Objectives:Analyze bearings in Maverick drive train.Analyze certain critical welds on theMaverick frame.Design a data collection system to takemeasurements on bearings and welds.Implement the data acquisition system on aMaverick during Spring Break at I-TEC’sheadquarters in Florida.Incorporate sensor data gathered overspring break into bearing life calculationsand weld life predictions. All findings and recommendations will bedocumented and submitted to I-TEC atthe end of the school year.Maverick on roadSenior Design TeamI-TEC’s Maverick in flightI-TEC developed the “Maverick” to handle any roadavailable and to take to the air when there arenone. In minutes this rugged, off-road car can betransformed to flight mode to fly like a poweredparachute (PPC). I-TEC is marketing the Maverick asutility/sport vehicle in North America in order tomake it affordable to indigenous believers and missionariesin developing regions.LETU Team Estimated Budget:Materials $ 1600Equipment $ 1200Consumables $ 200Travel $ 1000Total $ 4000From left to right:Stephen Smith, Bryan Little, Micah Martin,Joe Bailey, Josh Barreda, Josh Reynolds,Matthew Matney
