1/ The Design ProcessIdeas for new Royal Copenhagen products cancome from many sources. Often they are inspiredby heritage designs that are hundreds of years oldin a unique process of design evolution. But new life is breathed into our products throughcreative collaborations with designers and artiststhroughout the whole development process, fromconcept to final decoration.Bringing an idea to life is also a process of testingfor Royal Copenhagen products and many thingscan go wrong in the process. Which is why the finalresults, the pieces that exist are fine examples ofthe highest quality craftsmanship.2/ First ThoughtsAn idea strikes and is sketched orcreated by the designer/artist. This firstform is considered and submitted, thefirst step in a lengthy process.3/ Taking ShapeThe sketch is then modelled in 3D ona computer and from that design, afragile first model is created by a 3Dprinter. This printing process, whichcan take up to a day, lays ultra-thinlayers of porcelain over each other untilthe form takes shape.1 2348 49

4/ Fine-tuned by HandBut it’s the human modeller thatperfects the mould, grinding outirregularities and errors and thisprocess can take up to a month, even for the most experienced andeducated modeller. All those smalldetails, the ripples and flutes take time, patience and a steady hand…5/The Original ModelAn original mould is created from thisfirst model, by way of a computercontrolledmilling machine in a processthat can take up to three days.6/ Liquid PorcelainIn open casting, liquid porcelain iscarefully poured into dry moulds thatabsorbs the moisture leaving a shell. When this shell is a certain thickness, the excess liquid porcelain is pouredaway.7/ The Newly-mouldedProductThe new item is removed from themould and any joints and edgesare removed and lovingly polishedsmooth.8/The Final TouchThe porcelain is still fairly moist andfragile at this point, which is theperfect opportunity for retouchingand garnishing with handles anddecorations. A sure and steady hand isneeded to swiftly affix these details tothe piece, before it is dried and fired.4 5 76 850 51

9/ The Signature Blue10/ Painting the Porcelain11/ Glazing13/ The Final ProductRoyal Copenhagen’s signaturecobalt blue pigment can withstandextremely high temperatures, so isapplied prior to the final glazing andfiring. This process makes the colourand the item more robust and able towithstand dishwashing etc. After preheating, the porcelain remainsfragile with a porous and absorbentsurface. This is the point that thepainters set to work illustrating theporcelain. With brushes made fromthe delicate fibers from cows’ earsor reindeer belly, they carefully andpainstakingly paint on the lines, flowersand patterns that are so characteristicof Royal Copenhagen craftsmanship. After this, a thin, light-blue glaze isapplied. It is this glaze that reacts withthe porcelain clay to create a thin, glossy layer that highlights the beautyand structure of each piece of RoyalCopenhagen porcelain.12/ Firing the PorcelainThe product is now fired at nearly760 degrees celcius and undergoesa shrinking process losing up to 14%of its size. Many pieces are lost duringthis final firing; one in five items may bediscarded after this step. It’s a long process but finally, theproduct is ready. It may only havetaken a few months but via a processof craftsmanship that has evolved over235 years at Royal Copenhagen. Whichis why when you buy a piece of RoyalCopenhagen, you are also buyinga piece of Danish history, craft anddesign.911 12101352 53

Flora Danica is one of theworld’s most prestigious and luxuriousporcelain collections.sinceHold a little bitof history inthe palm of your hand.DESIGNED BY Johan christoph BayerLuxury lives on…Dating from the golden age of porcelain in the 18th century, theFlora Danica service is one of the world’s most prestigious andprecious dinner services in production today.…in dinneRWare fitfor royaltyFlora Danica’s origins wereroyal from birth. It wascommissioned by theDanish king, Christianthe VII and intended asa gift for the EmpressCatherine the Great ofRussia, an enthusiasticcollector of porcelain. At that time porcelain was an extremely precious commodity, considered “white gold”. Ultimately, the service remained in Denmarkand became the heritage of Danish kings. Flora Danica wasfirst used at birthday banquet for the king himself in 1803. Eversince, this royal service has been used only on ceremonial occasions, including royal birthdays and weddings, visits by foreignmonarchs and banquets held for the opening of the High Courtand the investiture of knights.A Botanical maRVel by Johann ChriSToph BayerAcclaimed porcelain painter, Johann Christoph Bayer took on theimmense task of creating the Flora Danica service, a job that be-came his life’s work. With distinctive and sensitive brush strokes,he copied the copperplates of over 700 Nordic wild plants takenfrom the Flora Danica encyclopedia and painstakingly handpaintedthem onto the precious porcelain. The long and laborious processcommenced in 1790 and was not finisheduntil 12 years and 1,802 different piecesof hand-moulded and hand-paintedporcelain later. To this very day FloraDanica is still moulded and painted byhand as it was more than 200 years ago.1,503 pieces have suRVivedThe remaining part of this service still graces the royal table ofQueen Margrethe II on state occasions at Christiansborg Palacein Copenhagen.A study of ouTSTanding individualsFlora Danica is as admired today as it was when it was first produced, although culture and taste have changed a great deal sincethen. Flora Danica speaks to us across the ages. One never tiresof studying the service, because each and every piece is decoratedwith an individual and highly articulated plant – completewith flower, leaves, stem, root and fruit. The Danish PEOPLES' GiftThe Danish Peoples' Gift to Crown Prince Frederik of Denmarkand his fiancée, Miss Mary Donaldson, when they married on May14th, 2004, was a Flora Danica dinner service with plates and cupsbearing the young couple's new monogram, designed by QueenMargrethe II of Denmark, mother of the Crown Prince.70 71
