Bass Bass Max
Max
This is our most popular bass pickup, constructed of two
transducers assembled as a single sandwich around a
special material, all housed in a heavy rubber jacket. It’s
designed to be slipped into the wing of one side of your
bridge. It has a strong voice, with “wood” and midrange — it
delivers a very linear, even response. You have to admire it
for its full range sound and ability to really cut through the
mix. Because of that characteristic, it has also become a rock and pop
favorite, and with its full range response and clarity it’s great for jazz, too.
Bowing is smooth, and frankly, you have to consider it to be a more
traditional and versatile choice than the Double Big Twin. It can be
especially suited for situations where you’d need to occasionally mount or
switch pickups between your basses, though it’s inexpensive enough to own
two. Discounted price $101.50 $101.50. $101.50 Combo Combo Combo Combo Deal: Deal: Deal: Deal: Bass Max, Pure Preamp, FREE
RB-1 RB-1 and and RB-1A RB-1A Player
Player
The RB series of pickups from Schatten Design are simple,
affordable, good-sounding pickups. It is similar in design to the
Bass Max, but our "A/B" tests have shows the tone from the
RB-1 seems to have more of a midrange emphasis to the sound,
providing a little more grit than the Bass Max (on the same
bass), where the Bass Max seems to have a more prominent
low end response and warmer, more natural sound. Which is "better"
depends entirely on your needs. A player wanting a more forward nature in
a dense mix might prefer the Schatten, while a bassist looking for a more
natural sounding, blooming low end, might prefer the Bass Max. Two models
of the "Player" model are available, a passive (no preamp) and active (preamp
included) version. The RB-1 $89.95 (passive) provides the RB bass bridge
sensor wired to a small black jack assembly that easily clips between the
strings just above the tailpiece. The RB-1A $159.95 $159.95 utilizes the RB sensor
and adds a velcro mounted combination preamp and jack assembly that
attaches to the back side of the tailpiece. FREE FREE US US shipping! shipping!
Double Double Double Big Big Twin
Twin
This Upright Bass pickup offers an individual transducer for
each string. Installation is easy, using a thin adhesive film, and
the heavyweight discs are about 3/4”. The initial impression
of the Double Big Twin is its clarity and definition, yet with
some body to it, kind of a “scooped” frequency response with
a good dose of warmth. However, you won’t get the fatter, thicker sound you
often hear with many pickups, instead expect more of the direct sound of
the string, almost like a close mic by the strings — so choose carefully. This
pickup is combined with the Bass Max (above) in the Bass Master Pro;
details on next page. The Bass Max is better for bowing; if you get any
scratchy sounds or finger noise due to your string type, this pickup will
accurately reproduce it. A buffering preamp (1 megohm input impedance)
is strongly recommended and almost always necessary for good results,
depending on your amplifier. $107.80 $107.80. $107.80 Combo Combo Combo Combo Deal: Deal: Deal: Deal: with Pure Preamp, +
Full Full Circle
Circle
The FISHMAN Full Circle has certainly
earned respect in the URB world,
extremely popular and well respected by
a lot of players (including Bob). It’s one of the best single transducer
solutions for upright bass on the market. It delivers a natural sound with a
nice mix of body and string. I hear the warmth of the Realist but with some
more string detail. The pickup replaces one bridge adjuster, and a matching
dummy adjuster replaces the other. The Full Circle is available in three
sizes: the most common ¼-20, the alternate metric 6x1mm, and the new
5/16”x18 format. A preamp is recommended, but not required. $229.95;
BP-100
BP-100
This pickup helped to launch the FISHMAN company, and
it has been popular for nearly 30 years. The level of detail
it offered was truly a breath of fresh air when compared
to the dark and undefined sounds from pickups back
then. It's not one of my favorites given more modern alternatives, but it can
do a good job if its character meets your needs. The two transducers are
placed between each pair of strings at the top of the bridge, so the nature
of the sound is focused on the string sound, not the body; there is not a lot
of wood in the equation. Impedance matching is critical regardless of what
they say, so an appropriate amp or preamp with a 1 megohm or higher input
impedance is very important to good sound. $159.95 $159.95 - - - FREE US Shipping!
GAGE Realist Realist (Photo shows the Realist on my Eminence EUB)
The REALIST pickup became popular rapidly and is
used by a lot of top bassists. It consists of a thin
copper film or wood veneer that fits between a bridge
foot and the top of your instrument, designed so it
won't alter the acoustic sound of your bass. Its sound
is very natural and woody, with less focus and more
body due to its location against the top of the
instrument. It’s best for low-medium volume gigs as the body location can
mean feedback issues beyond moderate volumes. No preamp is required,
although I do prefer to use an impedance matching K&K Pure Preamp or
FISHMAN PRO-EQ Bass DI with my own Realist for the best sound and clarity,
as well as for a convenient volume control. $196 $196 - - - FREE US shipping!
Their newest pickup brings the Realist's quality sound
The Realist SoundClip is an extremely well-engineered,
self-contained transducer unit that offers a great deal:
you can move your SoundClip from one instrument to another, bring it for
use on rental instruments while on the road, and remove the pickup from
moving the clamp to various locations on the bridge. See more features of
EAP EAP Upright Upright Bass Bass "Linear "Linear "Linear "Linear Microphone”
Microphone”
Microphone”
Microphone”
The Ehrlund Acoustic Pickup (EAP) is
a linear microphone for acoustic
instruments. We emphasize the term
"linear microphone" because this is
what Göran Ehrlund (inventor and
manufacturer of the pickup) calls it.
We were skeptical, because the looks
of this triangle says “this is just another piezo element” — but how wrong we
were! In our tests on Bob's carved Juzek and several other basses in the shop
we found the Ehrlund microphone has a very open, quite "microphone-like"
sound - realistic, and not so "direct" sounding (as pickups can often be.)
However, it doesn't have some of the drawbacks of a microphone - among
them, being more prone to feedback (but no more than a Realist, for
instance), and picking up other closely positioned instruments onstage. So
the initial impression is that you get the realism of a mic with the
convenience of a pickup. It's almost too good to be true. See Chris’ gig
SCHALLER CHALLER
If this isn't the classic magnetic upright bass pickup
I don't know what is! This single coil chrome plated
upright bass magnetic pickup is designed to screw
to the end of your fingerboard. A magnetic pickup
is often the only way to go in very high volume
situations - you sacrifice tone for volume. It can also
be cool to mix a magnetic pickup with your piezobased
transducer, to “firm up” the sound and help you cut through a dense
mix. Match this and your current pickup up with one of our K&K SOUND
Pickup
This humbucking bass pickup is a very good
alternative to piezo-based pickups for players who
play in high volume situations, or who have stage
setups that are particularly susceptible to feedback
problems. The humbucking design eliminates most extraneous noise as
well as giving it a thicker character with reduced highs. It also features
Optimized Microphonics to help with dimensional character and an ability
to pick up fingerboard sounds Use of strings with steel/metallic content is
Bass Bass Master Master Pro Pro
Pro
This system combines elements of the two
primary K&K SOUND bass pickups (see prior
page), which lets you mix their characteristics
using the tiny two channel preamp that is
included. The four transducer Double Big Twin
covers each of the four strings, and a Bass Max
is inserted into the bridge wing. It’s integrated
to a single wire with a stereo jack. The preamp has a belt clip for fingertip
volume controls are at the top; individual gain level and active treble,
midrange and bass (+/-20db) controls are inside.
One could draw a comparison to the neck and bridge pickups on a two
Bass Bass Master Master Rockabilly Rockabilly PLUS PLUS PLUS PLUS
This pickup system was borne from interviews with
rockabilly and country slap players back in 1998.
Many struggled with kludges of equipment hanging
off their basses, so I sent my specifications to K&K
SOUND and tested the resulting prototypes. I started
with the Bass Max, perfect for delivering a strong
signal to cut through the mix, and added a
specially-designed fingerboard transducer to
deliver the detail you need for the slap, mixed using
a tiny preamp. My instructions explain the various
characters and effects you can get by fingerboard
transducer placement. You can use the separate external volume controls
to balance the main bass signal and fingerboard sounds for just the right
mix needed for the song, and you can fine tune the tonal
responses of each pickup by using the separate internal trimmers
with active +/-20db controls for treble, midrange, and bass.
Rockabilly, bluegrass, and other slap style players, rejoice! There
is a custom pickup system for you, ready to go right off the shelf.
Listing at $328, the Bass Master Rockabilly PLUS system is just $253,40
complete! — the dual transducer setup, cable, and special PLUS dual channel
preamp. It offers the option to split the mixed signal so you can send the
bass signal to one amp, with the slap to another if you want to.
We offer the separate components as well, so you can put your own
system together using pickups you already own; see our web site for details.
If you play styles other than rockabilly slap, consider the Bass Master Pro.
Rather than the one trick pony fingerboard transducer, the Double Big Twin
is included, and it delivers a lot of natural string slap as well as being useful
to blend with the Bass Max for other styles; it’s just more versatile.
RB-2, RB-2, RB-2A RB-2A Rockabilly
Rockabilly
The RB series of pickups from Schatten Design are
simple, affordable, good-sounding pickups. While
similar to the K&K Bass Max, the RB-2's bridge pickup
tone seems to have more of a midrange emphasis to the
sound, providing a little more grit than the Bass Max (on
the same bass), whereas the Bass Max seems to have a
more prominent low end response and warmer, more
natural sound. A player wanting more forward nature in a dense mix of
instruments might favor the edgier mids of the Schatten, while a bassist
looking for a more natural sounding low end might prefer to anchor their
Rockabilly sound with the K&K Sound Bass Max by using the Bass Master
Rockabilly Plus system, which uses the Bass Max as its bridge pickup. The
Schatten unit does not offer the opportunity for separate tone control for
each pickup, as the K&K’s versatile but larger preamp does. Two models of
the "Rockabilly" model are available, a passive (no preamp) and active
(hardwired preamp included) version. The RB-2 (passive) $159.95 $159.95 provides
the RB bass bridge sensor plus the slap sensor wired to a small black jack
assembly that clips between the strings just above the tailpiece. It includes
a convenient dual volume control that mounts to the underside of the
fingerboard. The RB-2A (active) $219.95 utilizes the RB sensor and extra
"slap" sensor, and adds a velcro mounted combination preamp and jack
assembly that attaches to the back side of the tailpiece. It also includes a
dual volume control which mounts to the underside of the fingerboard.
Golden Golden Microphone Microphone for for Bass
Bass
Some pickups can be a wonderful amplification solution,
but there are times when a microphone can add
dimension and life to your signal. Or if volumes permit,
one could be the total true voice of your bass. The Golden
Trinity Microphone is a mini condenser mic, chosen
specifically for its characteristics and performance with
the Double Bass. It was designed and custom built by
K&K in their shop in Oregon. I was delighted to work with K&K to finalize
the selection of this mic. The Mic can be had in several configurations with
other preamps. Keep in mind that mics are not practical in certain situations,
especially when higher volumes are needed — like any mic it can feed back.
materials, extremely light yet secure. The disk material is an aerospace
polymer, strong as aluminum but lighter, and the shaft, boom and screws
are all aerospace grade aluminum. Silicone and other material inserts and
sleeves are used for all the contact points to avoid damage to your
If you haven't yet experienced the
ACOUSTIC IMAGE Coda, Corus, and Ten2
Combo Amps, you are in for a
delightful surprise — If you have, you already know that you want one! This
combo was designed by bassist/engineer Dr. Rick Jones to accurately
reproduce the sound of upright (and electric) bass, guitar, and other
instruments with one small, light, easy-to-carry enclosure.
The unique design of the combos is a cylindrical cabinet shape with one
flat side to accommodate a
downward firing 10” woofer,
forward firing 5” mid/high driver;
The Ten2 adds a second 10”
woofer facing forward, for a slightly
more direct sound (and substitutes
a small dome tweeter for the 5”
driver). The icing on the cake is
the clean, powerful 600 watt
removable head, all in a light and
compact package. This design
yields flat frequency response,
extended, tight, well-controlled
natural bass sound, and
omnidirectional output below 800 Hz — the Coda and Corus are not much
more than a foot tall, 11.5”H x 16”D, and weigh less than 21 lbs! The Ten2
is 17"H x 15"D and 29lb. Visit Visit our our web web pages pages pages for for for all all all the details!
The new Series 4 models of these unique combos have a removable head
with up to 600 watts of power. All amps have a
digital effects section and are available in one or
two channel models. The Corus uses a different
woofer, matched for guitar-range instruments.
The cabinet is available by itself, for larger
venues, as the Coda EX or Corus EX; adding it to
a combo increases the power output!
The preamp/power
section of the ACOUSTIC
IMAGE Coda, Corus, and
Ten2 is as unique as the
cabinet, with a distinct and warm sound unlike
most solid state amps. A parallel effects loop
allows the addition of external effects, and a
switchable notch/high pass filter helps tame
boomy rooms or eliminate an annoying resonant
frequency. Dual-use input jacks allow the use of
1/4” or XLR inputs. A built-in DI balanced XLR output allows connection
to a mixing board for PA or recording, Throw a switch for 115/230V, 50/60
Hz operation. Combos include a lightweight cover and carrying strap, with
a padded soft cases available. Many Many more more details details on-line!
Dyna-Bass Combo Amp
TRAYNOR Dyna-Bass
We know not everyone wants to (or can) spend the
bucks to get a boutique amp for their upright bass.
We proudly offer and recommend (and use) amps in
the Acoustic Image and Euphonic Audio lines, both
of which are highly respected, top-quality brands. But,
let's face it - they don't come cheap. We’ve been
looking for a lower priced amp for Upright Bass that
doesn’t sound “electric”, and we’ve found one! It’s relatively light and
compact at 30 lbs and 13x17x21 inches. Conservatively rated at 100 watts,
the single channel amp has a 1 megohm input impedance, ideal for piezo
transducers. The 15” speaker delivers strong lows but is surprisingly quick
and bright for a full-range response. More details on the web. $359
When gigging upright bass over the last forty+ years, I’ve
been fighting a two-headed Monster - Monstrous Feedback
along with the "Crap, am I playing out of tune?" Monster.
CORELLI ORELLI 370 370 bass strings have been one of my personal
Yeah, it happens. When you're on stage, amplifier position
favorites for some of my own requirements. I like their
can often be a challenge. Higher volumes usually result
versatile, articulate sound.
in creeping feedback, so you need to move it so it's
Physically, they are all thinner in
pointing away from your position - making it harder to hear. I built my own
gauge when compared to other
solution in 1975 but am happy to say that I've found a little powered stand string. I also find them to be more flexible, less stiff,
monitor that can do the job today!
so I can really dig in. I have hand/nerve problems,
Check out this ALTO mic stand mounted full range powered monitor and this string responds with less effort. They come
with two five inch drivers and 100 watts! Run a 1/4 inch or XLR line out in M (Light), F (Med), and TX (Heavy), though even
EUROSONIC UROSONIC strings are an alternative to more costly and
potentially problematic gut string, developing a cult-like
following with many jazz, rockabilly and bluegrass musicians.
Their design is what sets them apart, starting with a
braided cord of steel and silk, which is then tightly wrapped
with a blend of non-ferrous and noble metals. They are wrapped with a
specially shaped and ground polymer, that results in gauges comparable
to many old gut strings. Bottom line, they are a nice alternative to gut, with
a thick attack and less pronounced sustain than some other strings. The
coating makes for a gentle experience for both hands. If you play slap
rockabilly, choose the Ultralights. However, if you play classic jazz, or do a
mix of all styles including slap, I'd recommend the Lights. I also stock them
in Mediums if you prefer a higher tension. $140 $140, $140 free shipping.
’D’ADDARIO Helicore Your strings make a profound
difference in response, so D'Addario offers these in three
flavors: Orchestra, Hybrid, and Pizzicato. The Orchestra
strings are very bowable, designed for less sustain, and have
great thump and enough sustain for many players that play
a variety of styles. The Hybrids are a purposeful compromise between
Orchestral and Pizzicato strings. They have slightly more growl and sustain,
not quite as bowable as the Orchestra set but still quite a nice compromise
if you want a bit more grit and sustain than the Orchestral strings. Pizzicato
strings have the maximum sustain. We stock 1/4 and 1/2 size sets, low B,
and extended E strings in some varieties. $115 See site for Preludes
D’ADDARIO Zyex have been introduced as "longerlasting"
alternative to nylon, called Zyex. "the word on the
street" is that the strings are a touch thicker than Pirastro
Obligatos, and that they don't exhibit the "roll" when
plucked that other synthetic strings sometimes do. Early
adopters are saying that they speak very quickly, and that the pizz sustain
rings clearly without overstaying its welcome - basically, that they have a
warm, gut-like tone $149
NeW! NeW! D’ADDARIO Kaplan strings are D'Addario's
entry into the premium orchestral strings market, created
to provide a rich tone, variable dynamics, and excellent
bowing response. They’ve mixed various string winding
materials, while all have a stranded steel core, the Kaplan
Bass G string is titanium wound, and the A and D strings are nickel-wound.
The E string is tungsten-wound. $187
Strings Strings have a non-metallic core
to provide a gut-like tone without the disadvantages of gut.
They hold their pitch well in climate and temperature
changes, with most equally suited for pizzicato (plucking)
and arco (bowing). See more details on each string on
Rockabilly strings were the first offering in their
stir and a lot of demand. They are a hybrid, suitable for both
arco and pizzicato, designed to emulate gut, a step beyond
the Obligatos. They have more sustain, and Pirastro says,
“The big, powerful, warm and round sound of the strings is
combined with an accentuated low frequency spectrum and an exceptional
"Slap" line and have a distinctive black outer winding over a synthetic core. resonance with a good sustain.” Solo Solo & & Light Light Light gauges, gauges, too $211.01
Super Silvers lean towards a more organic,
gut-like tone than the Rockabilly Strings (also from Innovation). They have
approximation of the gut tone - providing that 'old-school' flavor. $139
PsychoSlaps PsychoSlaps are similar to “Slaps” but have a bigger
require a bit more tension for the higher speed and aggressive tone. $156
PIRASTRO Eudoxa Eudoxa generate a lot of requests, and while
I can’t contribute any personal experience with them, I can
say they are very popular among jazz players who want a
little more brightness from gut and a smoother bowing
surface. They are excellent strings, all gut wrapped in a flat
silver coating for more sustain and smoothness. $600.17
PIRASTRO Jazzer Jazzer The Jazzer ropecore steel strings are
recommended by Pirastro for pizzicato players, though they
can also be a good hybrid string for players who gig many
styles. For the Jazz musician: clear, powerful sound; big
tonal volume, long sustain. $203.82
feel - and a surprisingly non-metallic-sound. They have
sort of a "gut-like" top end, with their shorter sustain,
thuddier attack, and warm tone, and are good under the
bow. Lots of body, less definition. $131
$131
PIRASTRO Oliv Gut Strings (Olive) are wound in chrome
steel (Eudoxas are wound in sterling silver). They have a
strong, thick pizzicato tone with short sustain. While
bowable, the Olivs require a bit more bow pressure and
KOLSTEIN Heritage Orchestral/Jazz
Barrie Kolstein developed these strings; their excellent
THOMASTIK Spirocore are an old favorite and have
been a popular string for many years. They have great
sustain and a big sound good for many styles and remain a
jazz favorite, but you'll also find them on lots of general use
basses, for bluegrass, blues, and other styles where that big
sound and sustain are prized. Mediums or Weich (light) gauge: $204.99 $204.99
LABELLA 7710 Black Nylon Tape Tape Wound A
reported favorite of jazz bassist Ron Carter, these strings
are pretty popular for that and other reasons. They are metal
rope core strings, surrounded by a black nylon wrap, for a
smooth feel. They were originally designed to emulate gut,
but they have a bit more of the feel of steel strings. The bottom end is
good, but I haven't played a set in a while, so I haven’t much to say. $140
LENZNER Gut Strings I auditioned a set of these my
old '41 Kay, and I have to say, it was like "coming home" as
it had been about 25+ years since I had gut on my bass, and
the soft feel and organic sweetness was both surprising and
satisfying. The manufacturing techniques for gut strings has
come a long way, as it has for all strings, as they are very uniform and the
lowest strings have a nicely distinct but warm tone, unlike gut strings I
played in the sixties. If you want the sound of vintage, all-natural bass, or
are a rockabilly player wanting the most authentic sound, consider. Lenzner
PIRASTRO Obligato strings have a solid synthetic core
with a thin metal wrap. Designed to emulate gut strings, their
attack is "old school" with that thicker, warmer hit, with less
sustain than most modern strings and they are a dream to
bow. If you want a "traditional" sound for any style, you will
enjoy the Obligatos. Also in Solo Solo gauges! $196.06 Extended E, low B, high C,
your bass. Photos, measurements, and
instructions for choosing the right bridge
are all on-line.
An adjustable bridge can be a wonderful
thing for your Upright Bass. It lets you vary
the action for different styles, lower for jazz
styles, where fingerboard buzz is a welcome
seasoning, in the middle for general play
where you want more note bloom or boom,
and higher for bluegrass. They can also be needed for seasonal changes
on carved instruments.
This fine maple bridge has top quality, lightweight, ergonomic
aluminum adjusters that were precision factory-installed. You will need
to cut the bridge to size — for instance, the bridge on my Kay is 6 inches
tall. I will include my personal instructions for installing a bass bridge,
and be glad to chat with you on the phone if you have any questions
before or after the your purchase. Our ¾ size size adjustable bridges are just
Upright Upright Bass Bass Bag
Bag
I always thought it would be great to have a very special, good quality bag
that I could sell at a reasonable price. This bag has some of my favorite
features from bags that I've used and sold but adds a few nice touches. One
of the most important features for a bass bag, aside
from the obvious protection and price, is how easy it
is to get on and off. I don't want a wrestling match
with a bag! These bags have zippers on both sides of
the bag -- one that goes from the endpin to within a
few inches of the top, and the other that just about
opens to the top of the lower bout of the bass. This
bag opens w-i-d-e, ready to swallow your bass without
the aggravation of other cases I have had. This
distinctive bag is available in a really attractive Hunter
Green or Black, along with our embroidered BASS
logo.
• FIVE double stitched handles - double suitcase style
on the side, an adjustable length lower bout handle.
Also, a handle on the other side plus two "wrangling"
handles, near the endpin and up above the front pocket.
• Monster sized, smooth, self-healing zippers on both
sides and all pockets.
• Large padded bridge protector with International
BASS logo embroidered in white.
• One bow pocket plus three accessory pockets.
• A pair of D-rings on the shoulders.
• Rich soft lining, finished seams, no rough edges to rub your bass the
wrong way.
• 20mm (over 3/4 inch!) of two stage foam padding on front and back, that
is nicely firm, not floppy thick. Two layers consisting of 15mm regular
+ 5mm "stiff" adds body and a more rigid protection; 15mm on sides
for better flexibility.
• Durable cordura style, heavy duty water resistant material
outer shell, in our exclusive hunter green or black.
Your price for this great bag is just $149 $149 + FREE FREE (to the
US lower 48; small surcharge to AK & HI). It fits ¾ size
Kays and Engelhardts perfectly. See our web site for more
photos and specific measurements.
PROFESSIONAL Bass Bass Bag Bag with shoulder straps & wheels
I had been looking for a new case for a while, one with
truly professional features. While the Gollihur Bag is
a great case, more frequent giggers will want a bag
with heavier duty padding and straps, including heavy
duty backpack straps. This is it, and at a great price.
This bag has dense, lined padding that is
approximately 1¼" thick, and dense enough that the
bag is standing on its own in this picture! See the array
of photos on-line to truly appreciate this bag and list
of features, some are:
• Seven heavily stitched, reinforced handles • monster
sized zippers on both sides, the main zipper goes
completely around the scroll • heavy duty bridge protector
• Padded, adjustable backpack straps • Two luggage-style
1.5” wheels at the base of the back • Large pleated bow
pocket • Expandable accessory pocket • Two zippered compartments on the back
• Lots of rubber bumpers/skid patches • Rich lining with finished seams •
Durable heavy duty cordura-type outer shell
This is a bag that can run with the big dogs, and at a price that will
surprise you -- just $269 $269 plus shipping, grey/maroon trim, or black/gray.
INGLES Bass Bass Stand Stand is our most popular bass stand.
With its adjustable
cradle and padded
neck clip, we feel
it’s our most secure
stand. All contact
surfaces are covered
with a protective
foam type of
material. As solid as
it is, the stand still folds flat, as the photos show. This is of metal
construction and weighs 8.2 pounds. The INGLES' flexibility can also enable
it to accommodate a Baby Bass type instrument, as it is designed to handle
a bass, cello, and many electric uprights with lower bouts, like the
Eminence, as shown. $49.98 $49.98
$49.98
KÖNIG AND MEYER Bass Bass Stands Stands
I I used one of the light weight Hamilton bass stands that
is similar to this stand, but its questionable stability
bugged me. Likewise, the Ingles stand we sell is perhaps
our most bass-saving stand, but it's a bit bulky to carry
around for a quick-in/quick-out gig. K&M is a well-known
and respected musical stand manufacturer based in
Germany, and their design and execution of a similar,
portable stand beats the Hamilton. The K&M stand
surrounds the C bout, as shown in the photo. The very
solid frame has spring-lock arms. This newly updated black version has a
deeper, triangular “cup”, and is of a slightly more robust construction than
the original chrome model. It holds the bass with a minimum of contact,
making it easy to grab it and play - some have even played the bass while
in the stand. Black: Black: $99
$99
Electric Electric Upright Upright Bass Bass Stand Stand, Stand also by KÖNIG AND MEYER
can accommodate “stick basses” like the NS Design bass (shown
in the photo, not included) and similar instruments that don’t
have a lower bout. To put your bass in the stand, simply open
the tripod base, raise the height of the stand to be suitable with
your bass' measurements. The endpin "cup" uses a unique "V"
design, which is easy to aim for and seems to hold the pin more
securely than traditional round cups. The cradle has a metal
frame (think Gumby!), which you can bend to properly
accommodate your bass neck's exact width. It folds to a very
compact size and is only 5.5lbs. $134.99
HERCULES Bass Bass Stand Stand
Stand
This stand's design allows for easy placement of the bass;
simply lift the bass onto the padded bottom cradle, and lean
it back onto the padded backrest. No neck cradle means you
have easy access to the instrument, even offering the
potential to play it while it's on the stand if that is something
that might interest you (see web site for important details).
Two locking pins prevent the stand from "folding" on you
unexpectedly. The stand is solid and strong, with a capacity over 100
pounds - far more than your bass weighs. It includes an integrated hook
for hanging your bow. The stand folds quite flat and to a reasonably
compact size, and this is no wimpy plastic stand -- it is of all metal
construction, except for padding and feet, weighs only 7.5 pounds. $62.95 $62.95
Portable Portable Folding Folding Chair/Stool
Chair/Stool
When rehearsals go long and legs get tired (and old -
Bob), it's wonderful to have something to enable you to
sit while playing. We classify the many available seats
in two groups — those designed for permanent use in a
performance space, and the ones that are more easily
transportable. This adjustable chair is in the latter
group, extremely compact and light, yet sturdy enough
for most players.
The Facts: weight is just 10.8 lbs; folds to only
45x14x4¼ inches; rated for up to 250 lbs; seat size
13x10 inches; height adjusts from 18 to 31 inches. The
seat of this folding stool is lightly padded to save weight,
and infinitely adjustable from approximately 18 to 32
inches for just the right play height for most players. It uses a clever sliding
mechanism to lock the seat into your preferred height by using eight solid
rubber (replaceable) stoppers that pinch the tubing in four places. There's
a built-in footrest ten inches above the floor. The chair's low-profile frame
is made of powder-coated steel with a classy, understated look. It also has
a small 13x20 inch footprint $154
$154
Heavy-Duty Heavy-Duty Folding Folding Stool
Stool
As we said above, there are not many stools that are
easily transportable. However, while this K&M stool
definitely crosses over into the heavy duty (Oh no, not
the comfy chair!!) category, but is still reasonably
portable. The ergonomically shaped "saddle" seat on
this heavy-duty folding rehearsal stool is firmly padded
and comfortable. The included backrest (removable)
will give you some serious support when you need it.
The chair is very adjustable, from the depth of the
backrest to the height of the chair and the included
footrest - even the seat angle can be adjusted to suit
your needs. This chair is quite robust, an excellent
choice for extended rehearsals or pit work. $349.98
XEROS Upright Bass Endpin Anchor is a . simple yet effective
tool to keep your bass in place when playing it seated. It consists of a
slip-resistant cup attached to a 2" wide woven strap; at the end of the 16-32”
adjustable strap is a large ring to put around the leg of your stool or chair.
GAINES Bass Bass Bass Wheel Wheel — Deluxe!
The Gaines Heavy Duty Bass Wheel is at the top of the
heap when you look at what’s available. This is a fully
pneumatic eight inch tire with an inner tube — the best
way to absorb the shock of the road rather than transmit
it to your valuable instrument.
A chrome steel yoke has a receiver for the shaft size
perfect for your bass' end pin, and it is possible to economically own one
wheel for use with multiple instruments, obtaining a new pin to fit another
bass. The wheel itself uses heavy duty ball bearings, and the whole assembly
is made of top quality hardware. Spare parts are readily available, and Gaines
offers a lifetime warranty on all the metal parts. They are tops in customer
service. The Gaines Bass Wheel is $136 plus shipping, which includes one
pin shaft of your choice. A caliper or similar precision tool should be used
measure the end pin shaft to choose from nine sizes; special orders
available. One shaft is included with the purchase price, additional ones
are $21 each.
Transport Transport Wheels Wheels for Kays, Engelhardts, others
I have used a bass wheel to move my sweet old '41 Kay around
for quite some time -- why break your back when you can roll
your bass? Just pull the end pin rod out and slip in this nice
little wheel. It has a ½ inch shaft designed to fit the standard
Kay and Engelhardt end pin, or with the common 8mm or 10mm
size shafts; 10mm is by far the most common size, about 3/8”.
The wheel is 5.75 inches high, and it's made of a special rubber that gives
a bit, to help cushion the ride. Laminated basses are more robust and can
take the bumps, but carved and otherwise delicate basses deserve the
Gaines, above. This Bass Wheel is $42 $42
Essential Essential Essential Elements Elements Book/CD Book/CD/DVD Book/CD Book/CD set
I always suggest that you start your upright bass adventures with
an experienced and schooled teacher. However, geography and
cost can get in the way, as quality teachers are not always easy to
find. I found this excellent series, a competent, thorough method,
and at a very low price.
This is an excellent series for a new player as well as someone
who started to learn the bass on their own. It's important to get the fundamentals
books use standard notation, not tab, to learn or enhance your ability to play by
I first fell in love with the EMINENCE electric upright bass
(EUB) at the January 1999 NAMM show. After I started to play
it, I didn't want to stop. As someone who started on double
bass, I still gravitate to an instrument that feels familiar to my
hands and ears, and the EMINENCE EUB really fit the bill. It’s
a gorgeous instrument with a vibe that connects it to its larger
brethren.
What's the difference between it and other EUBs?? First, you
can see that this is an actual hollow bodied acoustic
instrument, complete with a sound post and bass bar. This is
not an instrument that needs to be plugged in for practice.
The EMINENCE is available in two forms, the standard
fixed-neck instrument, and the one with a removable neck
that allows you to ship the bass in a shorter container. Here
are some details that apply to both:
Fully acoustic body delivers real acoustic sound
NXT4, NXT4, NXT4, 5 5 Electric Electric Upright Upright Basses
Basses
When NS DESIGN first introduced the WAV4 I was really
shocked at the price, I expected it to come in at around $1200.
I don't think there is anything in its class at that price point.
The WAV4 really turned the EUB market on its head. It was a
roaring success, but NS Design suspended production due to
material issues. To fill the gap, they created a “CR WAV4” — the
NXT!! It offers the fit and finish from the meticulous Czech
shop, as well as a maple body, ebony fingerboard, at a new price
point, just $1270 $1270 for the four string and $1420 for the fiver!
These basses are essentially CR series instruments without the
preamp and mag pickup — their quality fit and finish is that
good! Now available in Amberburst and in a very dramatic
looking Black Satin.
CR4/CR5 CR4/CR5 Electric Electric Upright Upright Basses
Basses
I've have been a dealer for the EMINENCE Portable Basses
for over ten years, and happily gig one on a regular basis. While I
feel that the EMINENCE is the closest thing to "the real thing" in a
more portable format, I'm quite conscious of the needs for an
instrument that can be played at much higher volumes. I've often
taken my homebuilt Electric Upright Bass (EUB) to situations
where a more electric presence is required, where I need more
punch and clarity to get through the mix... where an upright bass
or my Eminence won't do.
We carry all their bass models, some of which feature both
magnetic and piezo pickup elements, active preamps, and a host
of truly gig-worthy features. The CR4 and CR5 basses are full-scale
electric upright basses. Select ebony and amber-stained maple
make for a very attractive instrument.
The tone-shaping options on the CR series are very impressive. Besides
the traditional two-band (bass and treble) EQ and the balance control to
blend the magnetic and the piezo pickups, there is a special "Polar"
control to change the piezo pickup's response to either vertical or lateral
vibration (for the best bowed and plucked sounds. More info on our site!
Bass
Similar in many regards to the full-sized CR
electric upright, above, the “Omni Bass” (Bass Cello)
from NS DESIGN has some differences to make it
uniquely attractive to certain players - particularly
those who want a "crossover" instrument to bridge
the gap between electric and upright bass. It has the
common 34” bass guitar scale, but with an arched
fingerboard for bowing. The very cool Boomerang
Strap System lets you wear the instrument just like
a regular electric bass, rotating it on its hub into a
horizontal playing position.
I find the NS DESIGN Omni Bass to be perfect for a
player who primarily plays electric bass but wishes
to capture that "upright vibe" with a modern twist. It is available as both
four and five string models, with the five string bass with low B, high C, or
tuned in fifths C-E. The Omni Bass is also available in fretted form; prices
are slightly higher. Contact Contact us us for for our our low low selling selling prices.
A chance encounter at the 2000 NAMM show started my relationship with
this nearly 100 year old Bulgarian stringed instrument manufacturer. The
carved basses at very low prices for over ten years now!
This instrument has the traditional solid spruce top
and solid maple sides and back; the fingerboard is ebony,
to a more important question: it sounds great, with all
the resonance and life that you would expect from a
fully carved bass.
As received from the shop in Bulgaria, your price is
$2950 $2950 plus shipping, usually $200-275 to most US
Join in the fun of open mics, garage jams, sitting in, and more
Unless you're Michael Manring or another aspiring Bass Solo Artist, a key ingredient
in improving your playing is to play with others... preferably with musicians that are
better than you. Be confident -- you may be better than you think you are; prepare
by jamming along with unfamiliar songs as well as the most common one. Finding
-- and diving into -- Garage Jams, Open Mics and "Sitting In" opportunities can be a
little daunting, at first. Mark, Chris, and I have collaborated on some thoughts to
help you to get involved -- and be successful.
Finding other players players willing to tolerate your
worth the effort. Your local Craigslist ads and music
collaboration of players who came to an open stage night, backing up open mic
couldn't make it at the last minute, and more. All of these can be valuable, can add
to your experience and repertoire, expand your skill set, and challenge and make
you grow as a player, with the side benefit of exposing you to other musicians who
may be impressed. Planting these seeds can yield band offers and gigs, as well as
Be open to other types of of music. music. I'm not suggesting you wear your cowboy hat to
