This is our most popular bass pickup, constructed of two 

transducers assembled as a single sandwich around a 

special material, all housed in a heavy rubber jacket. It’s 

designed to be slipped into the wing of one side of your 

bridge. It has a strong voice, with “wood” and midrange — it 

delivers a very linear, even response. You have to admire it 

for its full range sound and ability to really cut through the 

mix. Because of that characteristic, it has also become a rock and pop

The RB series of pickups from Schatten Design are simple, 

affordable, good-sounding pickups. It is similar in design to the 

Bass Max, but our "A/B" tests have shows the tone from the 

RB-1 seems to have more of a midrange emphasis to the sound, 

providing a little more grit than the Bass Max (on the same 

bass), where the Bass Max seems to have a more prominent 

low end response and warmer, more natural sound. Which is "better" 

depends entirely on your needs. A player wanting a more forward nature in 

a dense mix might prefer the Schatten, while a bassist looking for a more 

natural sounding, blooming low end, might prefer the Bass Max. Two models

Double Double Double Big Big Twin

This Upright Bass pickup offers an individual transducer for 

each string. Installation is easy, using a thin adhesive film, and 

the heavyweight discs are about 3/4”. The initial impression 

of the Double Big Twin is its clarity and definition, yet with 

some body to it, kind of a “scooped” frequency response with 

a good dose of warmth. However, you won’t get the fatter, thicker sound you 

often hear with many pickups, instead expect more of the direct sound of 

the string, almost like a close mic by the strings — so choose carefully. This 

pickup is combined with the Bass Max (above) in the Bass Master Pro; 

details on next page. The Bass Max is better for bowing; if you get any 

scratchy sounds or finger noise due to your string type, this pickup will

The FISHMAN Full Circle has certainly 

earned respect in the URB world, 

extremely popular and well respected by 

a lot of players (including Bob). It’s one of the best single transducer 

solutions for upright bass on the market. It delivers a natural sound with a 

nice mix of body and string. I hear the warmth of the Realist but with some 

more string detail. The pickup replaces one bridge adjuster, and a matching 

dummy adjuster replaces the other. The Full Circle is available in three 

sizes: the most common ¼-20, the alternate metric 6x1mm, and the new

This pickup helped to launch the FISHMAN company, and 

it has been popular for nearly 30 years. The level of detail 

it offered was truly a breath of fresh air when compared 

to the dark and undefined sounds from pickups back 

then. It's not one of my favorites given more modern alternatives, but it can 

do a good job if its character meets your needs. The two transducers are 

placed between each pair of strings at the top of the bridge, so the nature 

of the sound is focused on the string sound, not the body; there is not a lot 

of wood in the equation. Impedance matching is critical regardless of what 

they say, so an appropriate amp or preamp with a 1 megohm or higher input

GAGE Realist Realist (Photo shows the Realist on my Eminence EUB) 

The REALIST pickup became popular rapidly and is 

used by a lot of top bassists. It consists of a thin 

copper film or wood veneer that fits between a bridge 

foot and the top of your instrument, designed so it 

won't alter the acoustic sound of your bass. Its sound 

is very natural and woody, with less focus and more 

body due to its location against the top of the 

instrument. It’s best for low-medium volume gigs as the body location can 

mean feedback issues beyond moderate volumes. No preamp is required,

The Ehrlund Acoustic Pickup (EAP) is 

a linear microphone for acoustic 

instruments. We emphasize the term 

"linear microphone" because this is 

what Göran Ehrlund (inventor and 

manufacturer of the pickup) calls it. 

We were skeptical, because the looks 

of this triangle says “this is just another piezo element” — but how wrong we 

were! In our tests on Bob's carved Juzek and several other basses in the shop 

we found the Ehrlund microphone has a very open, quite "microphone-like" 

sound - realistic, and not so "direct" sounding (as pickups can often be.) 

However, it doesn't have some of the drawbacks of a microphone - among 

them, being more prone to feedback (but no more than a Realist, for 

instance), and picking up other closely positioned instruments onstage. So 

the initial impression is that you get the realism of a mic with the

rockabilly and country slap players back in 1998. 

Many struggled with kludges of equipment hanging 

off their basses, so I sent my specifications to K&K

specially-designed fingerboard transducer to 

deliver the detail you need for the slap, mixed using

to balance the main bass signal and fingerboard sounds for just the right 

mix needed for the song, and you can fine tune the tonal

When NS DESIGN first introduced the WAV4 I was really 

shocked at the price, I expected it to come in at around $1200. 

I don't think there is anything in its class at that price point. 

The WAV4 really turned the EUB market on its head. It was a 

roaring success, but NS Design suspended production due to 

material issues. To fill the gap, they created a “CR WAV4” — the 

NXT!! It offers the fit and finish from the meticulous Czech 

shop, as well as a maple body, ebony fingerboard, at a new price 

point, just $1270 $1270 for the four string and $1420 for the fiver! 

These basses are essentially CR series instruments without the 

preamp and mag pickup — their quality fit and finish is that 

good! Now available in Amberburst and in a very dramatic 

looking Black Satin.

I've have been a dealer for the EMINENCE Portable Basses 

for over ten years, and happily gig one on a regular basis. While I 

feel that the EMINENCE is the closest thing to "the real thing" in a 

more portable format, I'm quite conscious of the needs for an 

instrument that can be played at much higher volumes. I've often 

taken my homebuilt Electric Upright Bass (EUB) to situations 

where a more electric presence is required, where I need more 

punch and clarity to get through the mix... where an upright bass 

or my Eminence won't do. 

We carry all their bass models, some of which feature both 

magnetic and piezo pickup elements, active preamps, and a host 

of truly gig-worthy features. The CR4 and CR5 basses are full-scale 

electric upright basses. Select ebony and amber-stained maple 

make for a very attractive instrument. 


The tone-shaping options on the CR series are very impressive. Besides 

the traditional two-band (bass and treble) EQ and the balance control to 

blend the magnetic and the piezo pickups, there is a special "Polar" 

control to change the piezo pickup's response to either vertical or lateral

Similar in many regards to the full-sized CR 

electric upright, above, the “Omni Bass” (Bass Cello) 

from NS DESIGN has some differences to make it 

uniquely attractive to certain players - particularly 

those who want a "crossover" instrument to bridge 

the gap between electric and upright bass. It has the 

common 34” bass guitar scale, but with an arched 

fingerboard for bowing. The very cool Boomerang 

Strap System lets you wear the instrument just like 

a regular electric bass, rotating it on its hub into a 

horizontal playing position. 

I find the NS DESIGN Omni Bass to be perfect for a 

player who primarily plays electric bass but wishes 

to capture that "upright vibe" with a modern twist. It is available as both 

four and five string models, with the five string bass with low B, high C, or 

tuned in fifths C-E. The Omni Bass is also available in fretted form; prices

A chance encounter at the 2000 NAMM show started my relationship with 

this nearly 100 year old Bulgarian stringed instrument manufacturer. The

Join in the fun of open mics, garage jams, sitting in, and more 

Unless you're Michael Manring or another aspiring Bass Solo Artist, a key ingredient 

in improving your playing is to play with others... preferably with musicians that are 

better than you. Be confident -- you may be better than you think you are; prepare 

by jamming along with unfamiliar songs as well as the most common one. Finding 

-- and diving into -- Garage Jams, Open Mics and "Sitting In" opportunities can be a 

little daunting, at first. Mark, Chris, and I have collaborated on some thoughts to 

help you to get involved -- and be successful. 

Finding other players players willing to tolerate your 

learning curve can sometimes be tough, but it's 

worth the effort. Your local Craigslist ads and music 

store bulletin boards can be sources for posting

finding Wanted signs. When writing or responding 

to these ads, be brief and to the point. It isn't

Be open to other types of of music. music. I'm not suggesting you wear your cowboy hat to 

a death metal jam, just don't make your focus too narrow. Playing country, classical, 

jazz, and rock has made me a better blues bass player, not to mention helped me to 

appreciate what's universally good and in common with all types of music. 

Jams are Musical Musical Conversations. Be gracious, don't be rude or controversial. It's 

not necessary to continually inform everyone that you're the smartest guy in the 

room. 

Yes, it can sometimes be boring for the the bass player, but don't fall fall asleep. Besides,
