NeW! NeW! D’ADDARIO Kaplan strings are D'Addario's
entry into the premium orchestral strings market, created
to provide a rich tone, variable dynamics, and excellent
bowing response. They’ve mixed various string winding
materials, while all have a stranded steel core, the Kaplan
Bass G string is titanium wound, and the A and D strings are nickel-wound.
The E string is tungsten-wound. $187
Strings Strings have a non-metallic core
to provide a gut-like tone without the disadvantages of gut.
They hold their pitch well in climate and temperature
changes, with most equally suited for pizzicato (plucking)
and arco (bowing). See more details on each string on
be "closest to gut" in playability and feel. They are essentially the same
with the exception of the color of the inner windings. $139
Rockabilly strings were the first offering in their
stir and a lot of demand. They are a hybrid, suitable for both
arco and pizzicato, designed to emulate gut, a step beyond
the Obligatos. They have more sustain, and Pirastro says,
“The big, powerful, warm and round sound of the strings is
combined with an accentuated low frequency spectrum and an exceptional
"Slap" line and have a distinctive black outer winding over a synthetic core. resonance with a good sustain.” Solo Solo & & Light Light Light gauges, gauges, too $211.01
These strings provide warmer, darker tone with decent volume, making
them a great string for players who play predominantly slap-style. $139
Super Silvers lean towards a more organic,
gut-like tone than the Rockabilly Strings (also from Innovation). They have
a round tone with a blunter attack and quick decay, giving a closer
approximation of the gut tone - providing that 'old-school' flavor. $139
PsychoSlaps PsychoSlaps are similar to “Slaps” but have a bigger
diameter and a little more tension, better suited to psychobilly styles that
require a bit more tension for the higher speed and aggressive tone. $156
PIRASTRO Eudoxa Eudoxa generate a lot of requests, and while
I can’t contribute any personal experience with them, I can
say they are very popular among jazz players who want a
little more brightness from gut and a smoother bowing
surface. They are excellent strings, all gut wrapped in a flat
silver coating for more sustain and smoothness. $600.17
PIRASTRO Jazzer Jazzer The Jazzer ropecore steel strings are
recommended by Pirastro for pizzicato players, though they
can also be a good hybrid string for players who gig many
styles. For the Jazz musician: clear, powerful sound; big
tonal volume, long sustain. $203.82
feel - and a surprisingly non-metallic-sound. They have
sort of a "gut-like" top end, with their shorter sustain,
thuddier attack, and warm tone, and are good under the
bow. Lots of body, less definition. $131
$131
PIRASTRO Oliv Gut Strings (Olive) are wound in chrome
steel (Eudoxas are wound in sterling silver). They have a
strong, thick pizzicato tone with short sustain. While
bowable, the Olivs require a bit more bow pressure and
KOLSTEIN Heritage Orchestral/Jazz
Barrie Kolstein developed these strings; their excellent
reputation precedes them; they say (and I believe them):
produce a dark, warm sound under the bow. It's quite
common to mix the Oliv G (and sometimes D) with other strings. $538.76
We are told they are not really aimed at the folks who play
pizzicato most of the time as they tend to be less distinct when plucked,
love/hate relationship with... they have a big and fat,
boomy sound, which can be a bluegrasser's delight, but
there are downsides. The have a sort of "roundwound"
finish, so they are not good for bowing, and some folks do
like their less defined pitch, as well as their low price. $85
THOMASTIK Spirocore are an old favorite and have
been a popular string for many years. They have great
sustain and a big sound good for many styles and remain a
jazz favorite, but you'll also find them on lots of general use
basses, for bluegrass, blues, and other styles where that big
sound and sustain are prized. Mediums or Weich (light) gauge: $204.99 $204.99
LABELLA 7710 Black Nylon Tape Tape Wound A
reported favorite of jazz bassist Ron Carter, these strings
are pretty popular for that and other reasons. They are metal
rope core strings, surrounded by a black nylon wrap, for a
smooth feel. They were originally designed to emulate gut,
but they have a bit more of the feel of steel strings. The bottom end is
good, but I haven't played a set in a while, so I haven’t much to say. $140
LENZNER Gut Strings I auditioned a set of these my
old '41 Kay, and I have to say, it was like "coming home" as
it had been about 25+ years since I had gut on my bass, and
the soft feel and organic sweetness was both surprising and
satisfying. The manufacturing techniques for gut strings has
come a long way, as it has for all strings, as they are very uniform and the
lowest strings have a nicely distinct but warm tone, unlike gut strings I
played in the sixties. If you want the sound of vintage, all-natural bass, or
are a rockabilly player wanting the most authentic sound, consider. Lenzner
PIRASTRO Obligato strings have a solid synthetic core
with a thin metal wrap. Designed to emulate gut strings, their
attack is "old school" with that thicker, warmer hit, with less
sustain than most modern strings and they are a dream to
bow. If you want a "traditional" sound for any style, you will
enjoy the Obligatos. Also in Solo Solo gauges! $196.06 Extended E, low B, high C,
THOMASTIK Belcanto are rope core strings designed
for bowing, but they have a very musical, warm pizz.
(plucked) sound with a sweet sustain. Bowed feel and
response is wonderful. They’ve really got a hit here! $249.99
THOMASTIK Dominant strings are a long-time favorite
due to their gut string-like character. They are pretty
responsive for a stranded perlon core, and lower level of
sustain, desirable for bowing, and again, for emulating gut's
