CHALLER Magnetic Magnetic Pickup Pickup
Pickup
SCHALLER CHALLER
If this isn't the classic magnetic upright bass pickup
I don't know what is! This single coil chrome plated
upright bass magnetic pickup is designed to screw
to the end of your fingerboard. A magnetic pickup
is often the only way to go in very high volume
situations - you sacrifice tone for volume. It can also
be cool to mix a magnetic pickup with your piezobased
transducer, to “firm up” the sound and help you cut through a dense
mix. Match this and your current pickup up with one of our K&K SOUND
Two Channel Preamps and you may be able to defeat the feedback monster
when necessary. Volume control & ¼” jack. See additional specifications
on the web site, and remember — you must use strings with sufficient
metallic content with a magnetic pickup. $129 $129 - FREE FREE US shipping!
New! Humbucking Humbucking Magnetic Magnetic Pickup
Pickup
This humbucking bass pickup is a very good
alternative to piezo-based pickups for players who
play in high volume situations, or who have stage
setups that are particularly susceptible to feedback
problems. The humbucking design eliminates most extraneous noise as
well as giving it a thicker character with reduced highs. It also features
Optimized Microphonics to help with dimensional character and an ability
to pick up fingerboard sounds Use of strings with steel/metallic content is
a must! It terminates in a ¼” jack. $189 - FREE US US shipping!
Bass Bass Master Master Pro Pro
Pro
This system combines elements of the two
primary K&K SOUND bass pickups (see prior
page), which lets you mix their characteristics
using the tiny two channel preamp that is
included. The four transducer Double Big Twin
covers each of the four strings, and a Bass Max
is inserted into the bridge wing. It’s integrated
to a single wire with a stereo jack. The preamp has a belt clip for fingertip
availability and pickup balancing on the job, just 3.5 x 2.9 x 1.3 inches. Two
volume controls are at the top; individual gain level and active treble,
midrange and bass (+/-20db) controls are inside.
One could draw a comparison to the neck and bridge pickups on a two
pickup electric bass guitar; the pickups combine to offer a broader sound
palette from which to choose. The discounted price for this integrated pair
of pickup systems, three conductor cable, and preamp lists for $418; your
discounted price for the Bass Bass Master Master Pro Pro is $292.60 with free US shipping shipping. shipping
Bass Bass Master Master Rockabilly Rockabilly PLUS PLUS PLUS PLUS
This pickup system was borne from interviews with
rockabilly and country slap players back in 1998.
Many struggled with kludges of equipment hanging
off their basses, so I sent my specifications to K&K
SOUND and tested the resulting prototypes. I started
with the Bass Max, perfect for delivering a strong
signal to cut through the mix, and added a
specially-designed fingerboard transducer to
deliver the detail you need for the slap, mixed using
a tiny preamp. My instructions explain the various
characters and effects you can get by fingerboard
transducer placement. You can use the separate external volume controls
to balance the main bass signal and fingerboard sounds for just the right
mix needed for the song, and you can fine tune the tonal
responses of each pickup by using the separate internal trimmers
with active +/-20db controls for treble, midrange, and bass.
Rockabilly, bluegrass, and other slap style players, rejoice! There
is a custom pickup system for you, ready to go right off the shelf.
Listing at $328, the Bass Master Rockabilly PLUS system is just $253,40
complete! — the dual transducer setup, cable, and special PLUS dual channel
preamp. It offers the option to split the mixed signal so you can send the
bass signal to one amp, with the slap to another if you want to.
We offer the separate components as well, so you can put your own
system together using pickups you already own; see our web site for details.
If you play styles other than rockabilly slap, consider the Bass Master Pro.
Rather than the one trick pony fingerboard transducer, the Double Big Twin
is included, and it delivers a lot of natural string slap as well as being useful
to blend with the Bass Max for other styles; it’s just more versatile.
RB-2, RB-2, RB-2A RB-2A Rockabilly
Rockabilly
The RB series of pickups from Schatten Design are
simple, affordable, good-sounding pickups. While
similar to the K&K Bass Max, the RB-2's bridge pickup
tone seems to have more of a midrange emphasis to the
sound, providing a little more grit than the Bass Max (on
the same bass), whereas the Bass Max seems to have a
more prominent low end response and warmer, more
natural sound. A player wanting more forward nature in a dense mix of
instruments might favor the edgier mids of the Schatten, while a bassist
looking for a more natural sounding low end might prefer to anchor their
Rockabilly sound with the K&K Sound Bass Max by using the Bass Master
Rockabilly Plus system, which uses the Bass Max as its bridge pickup. The
Schatten unit does not offer the opportunity for separate tone control for
each pickup, as the K&K’s versatile but larger preamp does. Two models of
the "Rockabilly" model are available, a passive (no preamp) and active
(hardwired preamp included) version. The RB-2 (passive) $159.95 $159.95 provides
the RB bass bridge sensor plus the slap sensor wired to a small black jack
assembly that clips between the strings just above the tailpiece. It includes
a convenient dual volume control that mounts to the underside of the
fingerboard. The RB-2A (active) $219.95 utilizes the RB sensor and extra
"slap" sensor, and adds a velcro mounted combination preamp and jack
assembly that attaches to the back side of the tailpiece. It also includes a
dual volume control which mounts to the underside of the fingerboard.
Golden Golden Microphone Microphone for for Bass
Bass
Some pickups can be a wonderful amplification solution,
but there are times when a microphone can add
dimension and life to your signal. Or if volumes permit,
one could be the total true voice of your bass. The Golden
Trinity Microphone is a mini condenser mic, chosen
specifically for its characteristics and performance with
the Double Bass. It was designed and custom built by
K&K in their shop in Oregon. I was delighted to work with K&K to finalize
the selection of this mic. The Mic can be had in several configurations with
other preamps. Keep in mind that mics are not practical in certain situations,
especially when higher volumes are needed — like any mic it can feed back.
