Dyna-Bass Combo Amp
TRAYNOR Dyna-Bass
We know not everyone wants to (or can) spend the
bucks to get a boutique amp for their upright bass.
We proudly offer and recommend (and use) amps in
the Acoustic Image and Euphonic Audio lines, both
of which are highly respected, top-quality brands. But,
let's face it - they don't come cheap. We’ve been
looking for a lower priced amp for Upright Bass that
doesn’t sound “electric”, and we’ve found one! It’s relatively light and
compact at 30 lbs and 13x17x21 inches. Conservatively rated at 100 watts,
the single channel amp has a 1 megohm input impedance, ideal for piezo
transducers. The 15” speaker delivers strong lows but is surprisingly quick
and bright for a full-range response. More details on the web. $359
MEISEL COM-90 COM-90 Clip-on Clip-on Tuner
Tuner
This cool MEISEL tuner doesn't rely on a mic - it has a small
transducer built into the clamp to sense your bass’ vibration, great
for tuning in noisy rooms! I really liked the MCT-8L, but the new
COM-90 kicks its butt. It is small, at 2.25" x 1.5" x .45" (without
gooseneck, clip) and light. It has a mic for optional use, and the
display is a very visible bright blue that changes to green when you are in
tune! $25.00 $25.00
Upright Bass Strings
When gigging upright bass over the last forty+ years, I’ve
been fighting a two-headed Monster - Monstrous Feedback
along with the "Crap, am I playing out of tune?" Monster.
CORELLI ORELLI 370 370 bass strings have been one of my personal
Yeah, it happens. When you're on stage, amplifier position
favorites for some of my own requirements. I like their
can often be a challenge. Higher volumes usually result
versatile, articulate sound.
in creeping feedback, so you need to move it so it's
Physically, they are all thinner in
pointing away from your position - making it harder to hear. I built my own
gauge when compared to other
solution in 1975 but am happy to say that I've found a little powered stand string. I also find them to be more flexible, less stiff,
monitor that can do the job today!
so I can really dig in. I have hand/nerve problems,
Check out this ALTO mic stand mounted full range powered monitor and this string responds with less effort. They come
with two five inch drivers and 100 watts! Run a 1/4 inch or XLR line out in M (Light), F (Med), and TX (Heavy), though even
from your amp to the ALTO and adjust the volume to suit your needs. $189
$189 their heaviest, the TX strings, are not near as heavy
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? as some other "heavies". Available in 1/4 and 1/2
Call/email us with questions about your amplification needs! sizes in Medium gauge, and 3/4 size high C and low
B strings. $106 $106
$106
CORELLI ORELLI 380 380 380 are more conventional nickel strings, they lack the
tungsten of the 370 series. Expect a traditional steel string sound. $83
$83
EUROSONIC UROSONIC strings are an alternative to more costly and
potentially problematic gut string, developing a cult-like
following with many jazz, rockabilly and bluegrass musicians.
Their design is what sets them apart, starting with a
braided cord of steel and silk, which is then tightly wrapped
with a blend of non-ferrous and noble metals. They are wrapped with a
specially shaped and ground polymer, that results in gauges comparable
to many old gut strings. Bottom line, they are a nice alternative to gut, with
a thick attack and less pronounced sustain than some other strings. The
coating makes for a gentle experience for both hands. If you play slap
rockabilly, choose the Ultralights. However, if you play classic jazz, or do a
mix of all styles including slap, I'd recommend the Lights. I also stock them
in Mediums if you prefer a higher tension. $140 $140, $140 free shipping.
’D’ADDARIO Helicore Your strings make a profound
difference in response, so D'Addario offers these in three
flavors: Orchestra, Hybrid, and Pizzicato. The Orchestra
strings are very bowable, designed for less sustain, and have
great thump and enough sustain for many players that play
a variety of styles. The Hybrids are a purposeful compromise between
Orchestral and Pizzicato strings. They have slightly more growl and sustain,
not quite as bowable as the Orchestra set but still quite a nice compromise
if you want a bit more grit and sustain than the Orchestral strings. Pizzicato
strings have the maximum sustain. We stock 1/4 and 1/2 size sets, low B,
and extended E strings in some varieties. $115 See site for Preludes
D’ADDARIO Zyex have been introduced as "longerlasting"
alternative to nylon, called Zyex. "the word on the
street" is that the strings are a touch thicker than Pirastro
Obligatos, and that they don't exhibit the "roll" when
plucked that other synthetic strings sometimes do. Early
adopters are saying that they speak very quickly, and that the pizz sustain
rings clearly without overstaying its welcome - basically, that they have a
warm, gut-like tone $149
