Top Scorers, 2<strong>01</strong>1 ACTThe American College Test (ACT) is one of two standardized collegeentrance examinations used across the country as a criterion for selectionto colleges and universities. It is also part of the State of Illinois’ PrairieState Achievement Exam (PSAE) which all public school juniors arerequired to take every spring. Last year nearly 150,000 Illinois highschool juniors took the test and earned an average composite score of20.6 on a 36-point scale. Eighteen <strong>Woodstock</strong> High <strong>School</strong> students andseven <strong>Woodstock</strong> North High <strong>School</strong> students exceeded that averageconsiderably by scoring 30 or better on the exam. This accomplishmentplaces them at the “top of the class” when compared to all the studentswho took the test. Congratulations to:

The play is about teenagedysfunctionality and depicts teenagers as clowns who live under WackerDrive. Donation to Prairiewood Elementary <strong>School</strong>Chaya Eshelman was a second grade student in the Life Skills program atPrairiewood Elementary <strong>School</strong>. When she passed away last spring, herparents donated the large motorized/electric wheelchair and accessoriesas well as the bathing chair to the school. The estimated value of thatequipment was approximately $2,500. <strong>District</strong> 200 wants Chaya’sparents to know how much their donation is appreciated. In addition, wewant them to know how much their daughter meant to the students andstaff at Prairiewood. Included below are some comments that Chaya’sclassmates and teacher shared about their friend. Art teacher ChuckJones was also present to make a presentation to the parents.“Chaya was a loving young girl with a beautiful smile. Her laugh wascontagious. She was very engaged and curious about her environment.One of her favorite parts of the school day was feeling "the wind" in herface during circle time. One of her favorite activities was working with amusical piggy bank. She always bounced back from any setbacks sheencountered. She will always be remembered for the warm greeting sheoffered and her beautiful smile.”Prairiewood Elementary <strong>School</strong> Art teacher Chuck Jones shared with thefamily a mosaic that was completed with the help of Chaya’s peers. Mr. Meyer reminded those in attendance about the Education FoundationGroundhog Day fundraising event scheduled for February 4, 2<strong>01</strong>2 atD’Andreas in Crystal Lake. Event tickets are available for purchase at the<strong>District</strong> Administrative Services Center and auction donations arewelcomed.2. Dr. Lechner commented on an article she saw in the Sunday edition ofthe Northwest Herald that highlighted an elementary school in Missourithat had implemented a “walking school bus” for those students who didnot qualify for district transportation. This parent driven program not onlyhelped to supervise students on their way to and from school everyday,but addressed the need for daily exercise.Mrs. Wrzeski suggested that the <strong>District</strong> Wellness Council review thearticle to determine if this program could be utilized in <strong>District</strong> 200.3. Ms. Palmore informed the Board that the <strong>Woodstock</strong> Plan Commissionhad a meeting scheduled for Thursday evening where they would beconsidering a senior housing development on the old Die Cast site. Ms.Palmore added that if approved, this development would add additionalrevenue for <strong>District</strong> 200 while not adding additional students.VI - SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT1. Mrs. Wrzeski thanked the Transportation Department for their extra effortin getting over four thousand students home safely during the recentsnow storm.2. Assistant Superintendent for Early Childhood and Elementary EducationNancy Reczek reported that <strong>District</strong> 200 has been chosen to participate ina US Department of Education Rti study. Olson Elementary, GreenwoodElementary and Mary Endres Elementary schools will participate in thestudy which will involve first and second grade Reading interventions aswell as processes for Special Education eligibility. <strong>District</strong> 200 receivedhigh recommendations through the Research Institute to participate in thestudy.3. Mrs. Wrzeski explained that Special Education Facilitator Patti Williamsand Grants Secretary Judi Parks submitted Clay Academy for a classroommakeover and the school has been chosen as one of ten national finalistsin the competition. If Clay is chosen as a winner, the school wouldreceive $5,000 to supplement their Learning Resources Center and anadditional $5,000 for the school. Voting will take place from February 6,2<strong>01</strong>2 through February 29, 2<strong>01</strong>2. Mrs. Wrzeski added that votinginformation would be made available to the Board at a later date.


M-17080VI - SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT (Con’t)4. Mrs. Wrzeski thanked <strong>Woodstock</strong> High <strong>School</strong> Principal Corey Tafoya and<strong>Woodstock</strong> High <strong>School</strong> Choral Director Paul Rausch for coordinating apre-commencement ceremony for a <strong>Woodstock</strong> High <strong>School</strong> senior whosemother is terminally ill. The parent’s last wish was to see her studentgraduate high school. Mr. Tafoya and Mr. Rausch went above andbeyond to organize the pre-commencement ceremony that was held onSaturday at Grace Lutheran Church with over forty high school choirstudents performing at the event. Mrs. Wrzeski added that this was oneof the most memorable and heartfelt events she has ever experienced.Board member Marcy Piekos shared with the Board a letter she receivedfrom Sage Products, the parent’s employer, commending <strong>District</strong> 200 onour efforts to fulfill the wishes of a very deserving employee and family.VII - MONITORING REPORT (On File)1. Parent UniversitySpecial Education Coordinator Julie Jennett and <strong>Woodstock</strong> High <strong>School</strong>Director of Guidance Shannon Landwehr updated the Board on the annualParent University program. Through grant funding and a cooperativeeffort between multiple social and health services, <strong>District</strong> 200 will hostits second Parent University program on Saturday, February 25, 2<strong>01</strong>1from 8:00 a.m. – <strong>12</strong>:00 p.m. at <strong>Woodstock</strong> North High <strong>School</strong>. Thisprogram targets all age levels and contains a series of educational andinformative sessions for parents on topics such as co-parenting in twohomes, underage drinking, preparing for the social aspects of college life,and bullying. In addition, two sessions will be offered for Spanishspeaking families on parenting in the 21 st Century and preparing forcollege.This year through collaboration with surrounding school districts Harvard,Johnsburg, McHenry and Alden/Hebron schools have invited their familiesto attend the one day event.VIII - UNFINISHED BUSINESSThere was no unfinished business.IX - NEW BUSINESS1. Maintenance repairs of caulking and glazing have provenineffective to rectify the situation.The <strong>District</strong> contacted a local glass company to evaluate the situation andthey suggested installing new windows with a larger base that wouldallow a space for water and snow to build up and funnel away. Second Quarterly Review of the 2<strong>01</strong>1-2<strong>01</strong>2 Budget (M-17085)In her quarterly review of the status of the budget, Chief Financial OfficerRisa Hanson reported that revenues and expenditures are within theirexpected range for the midpoint of the school year in the Education Fundand Operations and Maintenance Fund. The O & M fund has been able tokeep expenditures down by utilizing fixed rate utility costs. Expendituresin the Transportation Fund are currently at 48.0% even though fuelexpenditures are higher than last year. Due to high claims the InsuranceFund balance has significantly decreased. Mrs. Hanson added that the<strong>District</strong> will continue to monitor this fund to look at trends.

Mrs. Piekos informed the Board that the PRIDE Awards Committee wouldbegin their nomination process in mid-February and Board membersshould be prepared to sign up for award committees at the March 20,2<strong>01</strong>2 Board meeting.2. Mr. Meyer asked the Board to decide on an Education Foundationdonation by Thursday.3. Mrs. Piekos told Board members that the Co-Curricular Committee wouldbe meeting on Monday.4.
