MYCF News Mainecamps.org Summer 2011From the PresidentAfter more than 25 summers in camping, is itpossible to have a new and challenging experience?I’ve often thought that the campexperience is so ingrained in my very fabricthat it would be hard to have a totally newexperience, but this year a new role awaits:the first time camp parent. For the last few years, my wife Heather and I knew that 2011would be the summer that our oldest joins the ranks of camper. Asthe months have progressed towards the start of this camp season, the realities of being a director and parent have settled in for me.This intersection of roles has been an interesting one, but morethan anything it has served to validate the importance of what wedo as camp leaders.Camp parents want the best for their children. I imagine that thoseof us in the dual role of camp parent and directors/leaders have thesame hopes and dreams for our own children at camp as our“outsider” camp families. Could our position as camp insiderstaint our view of camp? We all can remember that counselor thatdidn’t quite work out from a few years ago, or the chef that couldn’tcook toast without burning it. And who can forget when thatwhole bunk got lice? Knowing the ins and outs of our camps aswell as we do, would we want this experience for our own child? Is today’s camp experience in line with our values of giving ourchildren the best life experiences to round them into caring andcontributing young adults? For our children, the answer has been a resounding “yes”. Campwill provide an experience for our son that we know we can’t directlyprovide for him. He will make new friends from differentbackgrounds, expanding his world-view from our sheltered life athome. He will learn skills and gain new experiences through ouractivity program. And, he will encounter some hardships simplybecause things are different from the way Mom and Dad do thingsat home. Heather and I know he will be supported through thesehardships by caring counselors. We are excited for him to connectwith these incredible leaders and role models, as we believe theywill reinforce and support what we have been doing as parentsfrom day one.Board MembersMAINE YOUTH CAMPING FOUNDATIONBoard of Directors 2010-011President: Garth Altenburg, ChewonkiPresident Elect: Andy Lilienthal, WinnebagoVice President: Nancy McCann, Tripp Lake, PR ChairSecretary: Catriona Sangster, WawenockTreasurer: Fritz Seving, FernwoodBoard Members:Marnie Cerrato, Center Day CampJudy Crosby, Davinci ExperienceRich Deering, Birch Rock Camp for BoysTom Doherty, Camp KetchaJim Gill, Fernwood Cove - Education ChairMike Katz, Camp SunshineSpencer C. I am completingthe same health forms and packing lists as they are. And I hopeour choice to send our own son to camp has also been validatingfor them.Children who attend camp in Maine are very fortunate. As I spendmore time with each of you and get to know your camps, the staggeringnumber of campers that will attend our truly exceptionalcamps excites me. We each offer our own special niche to helpserve the developmental needs of a wide range of children. As I begin my new role as camp parent and director, I welcomeyour insights and advice if you’ve also held this dual role. The Centerfor Preventing Hate works to prevent and respond to bias, harassment andbullying through training, education and advocacy. While based in Portland,Maine we have worked across the US and internationally where our programs have been implemented in schools, communities, and workplaces, as well as at summer camps! This summer we are pleased to expand our programming to include workshops for Maine summer camps. We offer stafftraining and several program opportunities for campers through youth leadership workshops and camp assemblies. Ourprograms are highly interactive and seek to have campers and staff members understand the impact of bias, bullying orharassment and develop the skills for addressing it so that camp is a safe and inclusive environment for all. SPOTLIGHT ON:MYCF News Mainecamps.org Summer 2011CENTER DAY CAMPFeaturing MYCF camps in order of foundingdatesCenter Day Camp (CDC) was dedicated upon itsfounding in 1949 to Norman Godfrey, Jewish CommunityCenter’s first executive director in Portland,ME. It was his ambition to open a summer day campas part of the JCC programming. His dream of daycamp was reactivated at the end of World War II, butBuilding CDC, 1949Godfrey became gravely ill with leukemia in 1946.He died at the young age of 36 in 1947. The shocked and stunned Jewish communitylooked for a suitable memorial to honor their beloved JCC leader. Eventually a summercamp on wheels established in 1947 proved so successful that a committee was formed tofind a permanent home.Established in 1949, Center Day Camp continues to provide a traditional Maine summer camp experience for camperson the wooded shores of Lake Sebago in Windham, ME. Center Day Camp sits on 27 spectacular acres of woods, fieldsand shoreline. Generations of campers have spent their days lakeside experiencing the magic of camp, learning newskills and forming life-long friendships. CDC is a non-denominational day camp of the Jewish Community Alliance ofSouthern Maine, welcoming campers ages 3-15 of all faiths.CDC fosters a strong sense of belonging and connection as part of a thriving, thoughtful community. Counselors stresskindness, respect, and character in everything that they do.CDC campers are able to sign up for any number of weeks they like, ranging from one week upto ten. Along with playing soccer and baseball on our first-rateregulation fields, campers aim for the bulls-eye in archery, acetheir serve at tennis, venture through the trails on mountainbikes, and canoe the Sebago Basin. Campers improve theirswimming skills during our daily Red Cross lessons, “comeabout” while sailing, throw a bowl on the wheel at ceramics, andsend their regards to Broadway as part of our theater program. There are overnight adventures, hiking trips and let’s not forgetabout fishing, dance, and gymnastics. Older campers choosetheir own activities several times a week, allowing them to focuson their specific areas of interest within a structured program. The last two weeks of the summer are specialty weeks – wherecampers can focus on their favorite activity.Sailing is a favorite CDCactivity on Sebago Basin. The CIT program is a one year, progressive experiential education course designed to help youngpeople develop their awareness and basic skills of camp leadership. Though primarily created toproduce well-rounded, caring and competent staff members with a broad range of human relation, outdoor education, and camp programming skills - the program is also designed to benefit young people regardlessof their desired future in camp counseling. The issues raised and the experiences encountered in the program relate to ayoung person's life both in the world at-large, as well as within the microcosm of our camp community. Our CITs worktowards the goal of returning the following summer as a junior counselor. Many of our staff have joined us as campersand been part of the CDC family for years. To enhance the camping experience, CDC instituted a summer trip program for 13-14 yrs olds. Campers will experienceadventures rafting the Kennebec, peaking Katahdin and Mt. Washington, mountain biking in Boothbay, and more.Younger campers have overnights at camp, where they sleep under the Maine stars and cook out over a fire.We offer several special events during the summer. Whether it is going on a scavenger hunt for gold during Pirate Day,hitting the target on the dunk tank at carnival, rooting for the Blue and White in color games, or making s'mores on yourgroup's overnight, campers enjoy a break in our regular routine and revel in the spirit of CDC.This summer CDC celebrates our 62 nd year and we look forward to what the future holds. Come visit us at Center DayCamp and see first-hand Maine’s traditional day camp with the overnight experience. www.centerdaycamp.org5
