IKF Region 7Championships SeriesBuffalo Bills ReportArticle and Photos by Sean BuurGo Racing MagazinePresented ByRound 3 of the iKf region 7 championship series presentedby bridgestone took place at primm, nevadain the back parking lot of buffalo bills resort andcasino. Kerman Kart club hosted the event drawingdrivers from as far away as new Jersey. for as long as goracing Magazine has been in karting buffalo bills has been agrade a event. There is nothing quite like the feeling of gettingout of bed, walking down to the casino, and heading straightout to the race track in the span of 5 minutes. The conveniencehas played a big part in the draw over the years, but so toohas their parking lot, which allows for a multitude of trackdesigns. iKf region 7 has played host more times than mosthere, but events past have seen pro money races from cKc,and even a round of the wKa constructors championships. There is something about this place, and seeing a 20% rise inentries is proof of its popularity.drivers were forced to endure ever changing conditions allweekend long. saturday morning was crisp and sunny, but astorm was brewing in the area and officials were weary of itand kept a close eye on the clouds and made sure the programdidn’t lose any unnecessary time. The rain began to fall afterthe pits were cleared but things didn’t look good for sundayaction. The track was wet as the morning practice kicked offbut qualifying took place in the dry. Two of the heat raceswere ran on dry tires, but then a steady drizzle forced mostdriver to wets for the rest for the day. halfway through thefinals the taped down scoring loop came up because of themoisture. out of tape, out of patience and out of dry pavement, the concluding classes were scored old school.Jake craig, parker Thompson, and carl Modoff werethree drivers who pretty much made things difficult forothers. They were the kings of the castle, master of their10 KARTER NEWS - ApRil 2010

domains, and scored half of the total wins.Jake craig dominated the Junior 2 classes with 4 wins, sweeping both Kpv 2 and prd Junior 2. undefeated yes,but easy, no, he earned all of them as he only started fromthe pole in one class on saturday. Though winning is everything, drivers like Jason hannegan and haley Jenni camewithin inches of victory and breaking craig’s hold on Kpvand prd. hannegan scored 3 poles and a heat race win, butcraig came up with the results. david vasquez was in thehunt, but not as high up as we normally see him. The bestwin for craig clearly was saturday’s Kpv 2 where he soloedto a 7 second victory over hannegan. The most exciting finishwas saturday as craig took advantage of lap traffic jammingup hannegan on the last lap of the prd Junior 2 race.craig got just a little better run to the line, nipping the winby maybe 6 inches.with only this the 3rd race weekend of the series we see themain cadet protagonist are parker Thompson and Zane smith.guys like colton herta, and brenden baker have won races, while christian brooks, Matt Million and Jake drew are rightthere too looking for a way to the front. This weekend didn’tlook so good for Thompson as he had a turn one issue and hadto chase back, plus not scoring a pole always makes things alittle more difficult too. To many these would keep them offthe podium, but for Thompson it was just another day in theoffice, hammering out 3 wins in 4 classes. Junior 1 on saturdaywas a test as brooks came within 2 tenths of his first win. Thedamp conditions were no match for the crafty skill on sundayas he overcame an 11 second deficit in the rookie sportsmanprefinal to win the final. The same was true in Kpv1, smithscored the prefinal win, but Thompson found something extrafor the final to complete his hat trick.double winner carl Modoff, was untouchable in seniorKpv action all weekend long. The combined Kpv4 and superpipe class had a boost in entries this weekend thanks to thelour of buffalo bills. Modoff grabbed the pole on saturdayand went on to distance the field in the prefinal. The final wasmore of the same as Modoff went flag to flag for the win. Kylewright and Jordan brown rounded out the Kpv podium with2nd and 3rd. sunday was almost a carbon copy, but this timebuttonwillow’s race winner Kolby araki set on pole. Modoffmanaged to get the prefinal win again, but the ever-changingconditions were difficult on setup. Modoff kept the winningpace in the final for the second day in a row, this timebesting lloyd Mack and bradley espinoza. it wasgood to see “Mad Matt Johnson” in the mix afterhaving a season or two off. he and his family arecertainly missed by a lot of us old timers.with 9 of the wins secured by 3 driversonly 8 classes were left to contest. Those inattendance were privyto a rare occurrence, brothers winningthe same class ondifferent days.we’ve seenfathers andsons both takewins and evenbrothers running different classes but i don’t ever remembera time when competing siblings split wins.Kid Karts this weekend was a family affair as the watermanbrothers each scoring their first iKf wins. saturday’spole went to Myles farhan, but it was braden waterman whostepped up his game for the prefinal. braden got the drop onthe field to start the final and he never looked back on hisway to his first iKf Kid Kart win. The rest of the Kid Kartclass was left fighting for 2nd place. luis ortiz, hayden wagner, hudson Morrow and carson enright all dueled for thefinal podium positions. ortiz originally placed 2nd, but techdecided otherwise handing the position to wagner. Morrowcompleted the top three. sunday saw braden score the poleover farhan. The prefinal was the first class to have rain andit jumbled up the field, but braden held on for the win. aftermoving up from his 3rd place qualifying position brysonwaterman finished the prefinal in 2nd place and we had anall waterman front row. bryson rocketed out of the gates tostart the final trailed by his brother and farhan. when yourname has water in it you better perform well when it is wet.bryson and braden put ten seconds on the pack to score awaterman 1-2 finish, with younger brother 5-year-old brysongetting his first iKf win. farhan was best of the rest andfinished in 3rd place.Zane smith was the only other cadet driver to see victorybesides Thompson. smith qualified on pole in saturday’sKpv1 race and went on to win the prefinal. The final wasnothing more than a walk in the park for smith as all theaction was set well behind him. as smith cruisedto the win, skylar estrada brought it home witha great 2nd place finish. Thompson tried everytrick in the book, but estrada kept the upperhand for his best finish of the year.Jersey boy chris giumarra set the pacefor saturday’ssuper pipe qualifyingsession, hay balebut he and ahad an earlydisagreementto endhis prefinal.bradley espinozawent onto win, finishing3rd overall.leland holdenreturned tothe seat aftertaking someoff andfinishedKARTER NEWS - ApRil 201011

in the mix for 2nd. The combined Super Pipe and KPV classhas bragging rights for overall winners, but the Yamaha’swere no match this weekend for the KPV’s. Espinoza had hishands full of KPV drivers in the final, but it took a while forGiumarra to work his way through traffic. A few more lapsand he would have caught Espinoza and challenged for thewin, but instead he settled for 2nd place. Sunday saw AaronKoop nudge out Giumarra for the pole and take the prefinalwin. Many of the Super Pipe competitors sat out the prefinalnot wanting to burn off a $200 set of rain tires if it was goingto clear up for the final. Koop kept the Sunday sweep alive bywinning the final over Giumarra and Terry Nash for his firstSuper Pipe win of the year.Senior PRD saw an influx of entries this weekend and itwas a welcomed sight. Bobby Kelley got the ball rolling Saturdaywith a time of 42.122 in qualifying that was good enoughfor the pole. Seeing how many trophies this kid brought homeat the banquet it is never surprising to see him up front. KolbyAraki gave chase in the prefinal, but Kelley was just a bit outof reach. The same held true in the final. Kelley got a nicestart while Araki was forced to battle with Devin Lindsey for2nd place. Kelly pulled out a gap quickly and that was morethan enough to keep it rolling to the checkered flag. Once inthe clear Araki made forward progress, but the best he couldclaim was 2nd. Matt Johnson moved up to claim a podiumposition for the first time this year after scrapping with Lindseyand Araki.Sunday’s PRD runs combined with TAG Masters. Henderson being in TAG Masters. Henderson put a lap onthe field in the wet prefinal and was a clear favorite headinginto the afternoon final. Lindsey too seemed to be on hisgame in the semi wet conditions, and since we were in VegasI’d bet that they didn’t make many changes to their setupsfor the final. Lindsey had no troubles in the final and cappedoff his weekend with a solid performance and the race win.Ariel Jimenez was in the hunt all day long, but Bobby Kelleymanaged to get by her and take 2nd place. Jimenez held onfor 3rd. Masters TAG was also a repeat performance by Hendersonwho bested Ron Honsaker and James Rich. The winter/spring series comes to a close the last week inApril at CalSpeed.14 KARTER NEWS - april 2010

Unlikesprint racing where clubs typically ownthe track that events are held on, roadrace clubs must rent the track for eachevent. Karters used to the typical sprintrace entry fee ($50-$75) usually encountersticker shock when seeing the price ofa road race entry, but in reality, the costsare similar. A typical sprint race gets you30 mins of practice, a 10 lap heat, anda 20 lap main. With lap times in the 45second range, this works out to a total ofapproximately 50 mins or $1.00 to $1.50per min of track time. The typical “AllYou Can Race” NCK entry will get you120 mins of practice and 70 mins of racetime which equates to $1.45 per minute.Numbers aside, many people preferroad racing because of strict rules againstcontact. “I love road racing because ifyou’re faster than the person in frontof you, there is no way that you’re notgetting by. These days, it is not uncommonto run sprint races on tracks thatjust weren’t designed for the 55” widekarts that we run now. Forcing the issueis not uncommon and I got tired of thefrequent contact and broken parts.”, saysJoe Racer I.JERRY IMBODENBY jim WhiteIn addition to cleaner racing are thesustained high speeds that many peoplefind exhilarating and challenging.A Stock Honda shifter kart can easilybreak 110 mph at most tracks. Laydownand Superkart (250cc to 450cc) type kartshave even higher top speeds. Managingthe draft is often the difference betweenwinning and second place. “Unless I’vegot a big lead on the last lap, I generallydo not want to be in front on the lastlap.”, says Joe Racer II. Long straightawaysand tight competition makesphoto finishes a pretty common part ofroad racing in many classes.Road racing also doesn't usuallyrequire the “latest and greatest” chassisand equipment. A well tuned olderkart many times outruns that new fancymachinery. While true in most classesthis is especially prevalent in the Yamahasit up classes. Many in the class includingthe front runners are using chassis fromthe 90's. A couple may even be olderthan that. With the current economy thislow cost class is seeing a resurgence inentries. All you need is to change yoursprint gear ratio add a pipe and you areready to race.TaG karts are also very well representedin road racing. Like the Yamahaa simple gear change is all thats requiredto run on the long tracks. Tight draftingpacks are very common. NCK has classesthat allow for the use of front brakeswhile also offering the more traditionalrear brake only classes.Because of the higher speeds, roadracing is typically approached differentlyfrom the driver’s perspective.Drivers typically give each other moreroom, avoid contact, and “banzai” stylepasses. Preparation is key since the sustainedvibration of a 30 minute race willshake things loose that would normallystay attached at a typical sprint track. Tohelp ease the transition into road racing,NCK offers a terrific mentor program forkarters new to road racing. One thingnew road racers always seem to commenton is the helpful, friendly, almostfamily atmosphere of road racing. It'snot at all uncommon to see others helpingout when a competitor has problems.Even racers that race in the same classes.Just last race a new karter in the Yamahaclass had fuel system problems. No lessthan 3 other competitors pitched in andrebuilt his entire fuel system and carbgetting him back in action in time for hisfirst ever road race. Whether it be partsor labor most road racers are willing tolend a hand when needed. If you wish to join us or for moreinformation about NCK (including theirfull 2010 schedule) or road racing in general, please see their web site at www.nckroadracing.com.18 KARTER NEWS - ApRil 2010
