The “Duffy”Karting’s Highest AwardEach year, hundreds of karters from all of theUSA participate in the IKF Grand Nationals in hopesof winning their class and becoming an IKF GrandNational Champion. Along with this prestigious title, each driver is competing for the most covetedaward in karting, the “Duffy.”Prior to 1976, each Grand National Championreceived a TV set or a plaque as their award. At the1976 April Meeting of the I.K.F. Board of Directors,Administrative Director Bob Graham presented theBoard Members with a model of the 12 inch bronzestatuette that was to be mounted on a 6 inch woodenbase. The designer of this model was Pete Millar. The Board Members agreed that karting neededa “grand prize” to present to each Grand NationalChampion; something that was out of the ordinary andunique as most karters received many trophies eachyear for participating in local or regional events. Thevote was taken and the statuette was presented, for thefirst time, at the 1976 I.K.F. Grand Nationals. From 1976 to 1981, it was known as the “Joe Karter”award. At the January 1981 Board Meeting, PresidentJohn Strauser called for the Board’s vote to honor aman who, just the month before, had retired fromI.K.F. and karting. This well know gentleman had beenactive in karting as a driver, mechanic, Board Member, past President several times of the I.K.F., and was theCo-Founder of organized karting and the Go-Kart Clubof America, which evolved into the International KartFederation. His name, Frank “Duffy” Livingstone.President Strauser made the announcementthat henceforth the statuette was to beknown as the “Duffy.”2011 IKF GRAND NATIONALSROAD RACEJune 15-18, 2011Eagles Canyon Raceway,Decatur, TXSWRA4-CYCLESPRINTJune 29-July 2, 2011Shasta Kart Track,Redding, CAShasta Kart Club4-CYCLESPEEDWAYJuly 10-16, 2011University Plains Speedway,Brookings, SDSouth Dakota Kart Club2-CYCLESPEEDWAY-MIDGETJuly 31-August 4, 2011Delaware Speedway,Delaware, IATri County Karters2-CYCLESPRINTAugust 25-28, 2011CalSpeed, Fontana, CAEP1K ProMotion4 KARTER NEWS - may 2011

Dueto discrepancies in the technical drawing inthe IKF TechnicalManual and actual CIK homologatedbumpers, it is requested that the approvalbe listed as “201.6.4” Other rear bumpersallowed are: Scribner Plastics PN 6050.Motley asks if this has been approved bythe Sprint Committee Chairman. Feels thereis a problem in the IKF that a lot of thingsgo to the whole Board and the Committeeshould be making the recommendation onit. Scribner discusses the interpretation of theRulebook. Verlengiere states the Rulebookalready allows it. Scribner problem with theRulebook is the vertical surface call out, itdoes not really define it. Verlengiere commentsit says CIK style. Board reviewed thisand unanimously agreed that it is CIK styleand is allowed. Verlengiere states this complieswith the Rulebook. Board agrees.Mike SchornRear Bumper Rule – he is asking theBoard permission to allow flex in the previousbumpers to be allowed in 2011. Onlycompromise he can see for his constituents.Scribner states there was a lot of communicationfrom up there and should speak volumesto the Board. Schorn asks Cantrell if hehas seen the bumpers; heard they had beenmodified. Verlengiere asks Motley if thereare any concerns about how it impacts thetire other than not complying to the rule;asks if there are other issues with the designthat make it questionable. Motley statesthere are concerns with it because it allowspart of the bumper to run into the tire; it doesnot have crush like the plastic ones. Scribnerstates the plastic ones run into the tire too,Diederich says it does not have the sameeffect as metal does. Verlengiere discussesthe bumper Schorn showed to the Boardyesterday. Asks if it is rigidly mounted tothe bar so when you hit it, it moves towardthe tire. Schorn says it can go against the tiresand comes back up. Scribner states similar toa molded plastic bumper would do. Schornsays the Rulebook says you can’t have plasticand has to have a metal loop. Discussesbolting. Scribner says continuous is not inthe Rulebook. Hilger states that most mustbe drilled and pinned.Steve Marso joins the Meeting.Araki states that he has seen more plasticsbumpers than steel bumpers come loose orcome off the karts on a regular basis. Motleystates they are geographically different.Araki states the problem is trying to controlwhich one of the bumpers is ???.Motleyreads “retention cables or straps may beutilized however they may not compromisethe original design or homologation of thebumper and mounting hardware”. Verlengierestates there has been much discussion onthis previously and asks where the Board isat today; is Schorn asking for another vote.Hilger states Schorn is asking to allow thebumpers Schorn brought to the Meetingthrough 2011. Lengthy discussion by Board.Hilger reads the clarification of the rear bumperrule: the bumper may be either CIK styleplastic or continuous loop steel tube of doublebar design. No flexible components areallowed. Minimum diameter of .625” with.065” wall. The basic design must conformto the following drawing. Hoegerl asks ifthe elephant ears are added, is it consideredcontinuous. Scribner replies yes when it iswelded, it is allowed. If you add the wordcontinuous, it will have to be welded orchange the verbiage to say it must be welded.Motley states that most letters came froma narrow geographical area. Scribner feelsthey need to phase out the hinged or flexedbumpers at a pre-determined time. Arakiasks if they can approve the wording thatfull width bumpers are mandatory in 2011or whatever year and the rule that Motleywrites will be effective January 1, 2012. Scribneragrees with Araki. Want to eliminate thesmall bumpers. Allow a transition period toget through the season. Motley suggests tonot require the full bumper in 4 cycle.Araki states that, according to how hereads the Rulebook, the bumpers are legal.Scribner agrees with Araki. Motley says toconsider the intent of the rule despite slightflaws in the description.Clarification of the rear bumper rule –Section 201.6 – effective 30 days after postingon the IKF Website.REAR BUMPER-CIK STYLE:Note dimensions shown are for adultchassis only, Cadet and Kid Kart must extendto at least center of rear tires and the endsshall not extend beyond the outside of therear tires, except in a declared rain race. The rear bumper may be either CIK styleplastic or welded steel tubing loop, of doublebar design. Welded on "elephant ear" extensionsare permissible. No flexible componentsare allowed.13

Minimum diameter of steel tubing mustbe .625” with a minimum .065” wall thickness. The basic design must conform to thefollowing drawing: (Note the requirementfor the lower bar in Section 201.6.3).If steel tubing utilized, the rear protectionshall extend to at least the center of the reartires. However, they may not compromisethe original design or Homologationof the bumper and mounting hardware.Schorn reminds the Board IKF stickersare required on karts according to Section105.2.1.2.1 in the 2011 IKF Rulebook. Verlengiereasks if this is enforced nationally –reply is yes.Ed DiederichDiederich proposes a review and rewriteof the Governor and Regional CoordinatorPolicies and Procedures Handbook. Rewriteto define the chain of command. Includethe National Coordinator. Board agrees thatDiederich, Schorn, Verlengiere and Araki towork on the Handbook.Diederich suggests formation of a Committeeof 3 active racers from Sprint Region6, 7, and 11 and one Director, as an overseerof the Committee, to review the structure ofthe Grand National. To make sure we have aproduct going forward in sprint racing thatmirrors what is current in go karting sprintracing. Includes 2 and 4 cycle sprint. Reviewthe current format and scheduling and makerecommendations for future formats, schedulingand venue. Develop a proposal by Septemberso the Board can evaluate for the OctoberBoard Meeting. Suggests that Araki, Schornand Diederich approach their regional racersand get the names together by June. Wants theGrand Nationals to be consistent at least overa three year period to run the same classes.ProposalsMotley comments the Proposal systemdoes not get used as much as it should basedon how it is set up. Few Proposals from thefloor. Need to take a look at it to improve it.Need more input from customers. Problemcould be the time frame before decision ismade. Ineffective system today. Verlengierestates the Proposal system is for rule changesaccording to Section 101.2.6; was put in forengines. Diederich reached out to racersin 2008 and got little participation. ShareeHoegerl suggests Survey Monkey. Verlengierestates the racers want to go where thefast guys are, race the biggest classes andthe coolest event, they could care less aboutwhat the Board does. Araki agrees. Hilgerstates the communication is at the races. Cal State Karting Series Round TwoAdams Motorsports ParkArticle and Photos by Go Racing MagazineSenior PRD actionRace # 2 of the Cal State KartingSeries took place at the WorldFamous Adams MotorsportsPark in Riverside, Ca the weekend ofApril 2nd and 3rd. The current formatof practice on Saturday and racing onSunday continues to provide racers withplenty of track time, something the Rotaxracers have grown accustom to racing allthis time with the Gatorz Series. Entriesremained constant around the 125 mark,as many locals relished the opportunityto race in a regional program at Adams. The Adams facility is a place of legends, and it was great to see guys like GeorgeMack, and Buddy Rice in the house, soaking up a little old school karting. The weekend was fantastic for racing, with just a threat of showers that neverpanned out. As always Adams providedexcellent on track action and fireworksin the pits.Micro Max was the only class tohave racing on Saturday as their programis intertwined with the practiceof the other classes. With two competitorsthis weekend, there leaves plentyof room for growth. Preston Andersonwas once again the better of the two asDezel West just couldn't match his pace.Anderson qualified on pole, won theprefinal and ran solo to the win in thefinal. West had a mechanical failure thatunfortunately kept him from participatingin the final.KPV 1 was the first class to drop apedal in anger on Sunday. As the daywent on, things heated up even moreon and off track. Qualifying was veryclose with Jake Drew landing the poleover Colton Herta by .039. Drew went a49.945 in the So Cal Sprinters track configurationthat was being utilized thisweekend. Dylan Cartier and HannahGrisham made up row two, as AndrewMurowatz rounded out the fast five. The 10 lap prefinal saw Drew retain thelead narrowly over Herta. Skylar Estradaand Royal McKee gained ground tofinish in 3rd and 4th. The final got uglyearly, as contact within the lead groupresulted in heated pit discussions, driversoff track and a DQ. Drew led theopening laps over Herta and Estrada, but Justice Lepe was the kart on themove. Seven laps into the final andLepe was around everyone and leadingthe charge. Grisham too was climbingup the rankings and right in the thickof it. Contact up front left Herta sidelinedand Drew back in the chase groupheaded up by Christian Brooks. Lepeand Grisham now had a clear track, wellahead of Drew, Brooks, Estrada, McKee,and Zach Arthur. Lepe kept Hannah atbay, but broth drivers turned in greatdrives. Behind them things went badlyfor Brooks on the white flag lap. Officialsissued a penalty to Drew for contactresulting in a big DQ for one of theclass contenders. With results sorted thetop five was Lepe, Grisham, Estrada,Arthur, and Murowatz. Nothing likegetting the finals off to a great start inthe afternoon.Rotax Junior: With spring break inthe air many of the Juniors were goneon school trips, and Rotax Junior felt theKARTER NEWS - may 201117

unt of the effects. Enzo Mestre was the lone entry, but tohis credit he ran every available lap in the combined PRDJr. 2 / Rotax Junior class. In PRD Parker Thompson set thepace from start to finish. His pole time of 46.317 was 3 tenthsquicker then Brenden Baker and Wyatt May. Parker killedit in the heat race walking away from a great battle for 2ndplace between Chance Skaufel, Jason Hannegan and May.The final was not much of a contest as Thompson once againled from start to finish. The skirmish for 2nd place again stolethe eyes of the spectators as it was the best action on track.Track position was key as Skaufel, Hannegan and May alllooked for openings. Maxwell Rios, Henry Fallshand, Baker, and Willy Axton were doing the same just a few feet back. After starting deep in the pack, Axton was on a mission, picking up position after position and gaining ground on themain chasers. Thompson cruised it to the finish with enoughmargin for error, not wanting a mechanical like last month’sfoil his chance at victory. Hannegan drove his behind off forbest in class honors and a second place finish. Axton ended aquality effort with a trip to the podium in 3rd.Senior PRD: The most anticipated class of the weekendwas Sr. PRD. With 29 drivers lining up for qualifying andveteran Adams racers like Mack, Matta, Carmody, and Giumarranot even hitting the top ten you know the competitionis stout. Three more long-time Adams racers topped the timecharts with an Aussie and an up and coming kid roundedout the top five. Notorious Nick Johnston dropped a 46.369bomb in qualifying with Mad Matt Johnson just missing thepole with his 46.403. Derek Zimmermann put his 15 yearsexperience to work to start the prefinal 3rd. Scott Saundersand Devin Lindsey completed the fast five. Impressively, 17drivers all were within 1 second of the pole time. The prefinalsaw a shakeup in the running order as Johnston fell to 4thand Johnson scored the win. After leading most of the laps,Zimmerman moved up a spot to finish in 2nd, while Lindseyshowed good form and finished in 3rd. CalSpeed’s winnerEnzo MestreJohn Wallace IIIPaul BonillaJustice Lepe #8Dezel West #21Camden Geise climbed the charts to finish in 5th. A thrownchain for Saunders cost him dearly and he would start thefinal from the last row.The final was set for 26 grueling laps around the 7/10ths,14 turn racing circuit and as the green dropped Zimmermannslid in front of Johnson, taking over the lead. Johnston, Lindseyand Kelley fell in line behind the leaders as they exitedthe “Big Monza” turn for the first time. Parker Thompson #80winning move. Once out front, Johnsonrarely looked back over his shoulder tosee how far back the competition. Johnstonsoon too was past Zimmermann asKelley, Andrick Zeen and Geise wereclosing in. By lap 5, Sounders was upto 13th position and turning the fastestlaps of the race. Attrition played a heavypart of the contest as Zimmermann fellout from 3rd with a broken bolt. Zeentook over 3rd and narrowed the gapAnthony Sawyerto Johnston. The two would go nose totail to the checkered flag behind Johnsonwith Johnston just clipping Zeen atthe line. Saunders, with a crazy impressivedrive through the field ran out oflaps after catching Kelley and crackingthe top five. Unfortunately for both 4thand 5th, the tech barn ended two solidruns. Donny St. Ours, out a kart for afew years now, came back at the openinground to race and finished here witha quality 4th. He was in the hunt mostof the day along with Geise, who endedup 5th and leaves Adams in the hunt forthe championship.Kid Kart: Anthony Willis toppedthe Kid Kart qualifying charts on Sundaywith a time of 1:03.718. Dezel Weststarted P2 just a few tenths back in time. The heat race was fantastic as Westscored a narrow victory over a chargingHudson Morrow and pole sitter Willis. The final was as exciting as they comewith all three top finishers leading lapsin the 10 lap contest. It was back andfourth all race long starting with Willisup front, then Morrow, then Willis, thenMorrow, then Willis again until finallyWest made a charge and captured thewin. The three drivers went nose to tailto the finish. Morrow held on for 2ndplace with Willis right there in 3rd. day with 21 total entries. Royal McKeejust bested Nicky Hays in Mini Maxqualifying while Adam Iavelli did thesame to Zach Arthur in the PRD group. With split starts in the heat and the finalmost of the racing between classes wasavoided, but I for one would like to seecombined groups gridded up based onwhere they finished regardless of class.Works for the Rolex guy, should workfor karts too. Hays and Iavelli tookthe prefinal wins, but the finals werea lot longer and sure to keep everyoneon their toes. Hays and McKee werethe class of the Mini Max field. WithMcKee starting shotgun it took him afew laps to make his way up to Hays. The two were in for a great battle whena mechanical took Hays out of the raceonly six laps in. McKee drove off for aneasy win. Annie and Toni Breidingerhad a good race for what was now 2ndplace. They exchanged positions a fewtimes before Annie ended up in 2nd forgood. PRD saw Iavelli take the greenand hold it through the first lap. A goodstart by Jake Drew put him in secondplace for the opening laps. Arthur wasquick and challenged Drew for 2nd,taking over the position by lap 6. Iavellilooked to be in complete charge ofthings and started to draw away fromthe chase group. It looked as though hewould easily run home free to the final, but Arthur was fast and the two cameback together late in the race. Arthurtook the lead from Iavelli, but the #12never gave up. With a last lap moveIavelli regained the lead and scored asuperb win at his home track. A greateffort by Arthur earned him 2nd place.Drew ran pretty much the entire race in3rd and that’s where he finished. ChristianBrooks was a few seconds back andfinished in 4th place. Cooper Whitbreadturned in a solid performance to finishoff the top five with a 5th.Rotax Masters: Kevin Manningput his vast Adams experience to gooduse qualifying in Masters Rotax with atime of 46.056. Round one winner PaulBonilla sat P2 just 3 tenths off Manning.Manning took the win in the prefinalwith Andy Seesemann moving up oneposition to start 2nd. The final was agiant letdown as contact entering turnone scattered most of the field. It shouldhave been a restart for sure and left mostof the drivers baffled that it wasn’t.Bonilla got away clean in the may-layand drove off to the win, leading everylap. Manning and Seesemann recoveredbut were left with only 2nd and 3rd tocontend for. Seesemann eventually gotaround Manning for 2nd but we wereall disappointed not to see a three wayup front for the win.Adam IavelliKARTER NEWS - may 2011Junior 1 Comer: Qualifying inJunior 1 Comer was a close one as allseven drivers were separated by lessthan a second. The only actionwas late in the contest andRoyal McKeeBaker and Reed exchanged4th and 5th place positions.Reed ended up besting Bakerfor 4th place.Rotax Senior: The finalevent of the day was RotaxSr. and qualifying was a nailbiter. Jeremy Kane procuredthe pole by just inches overJohn Wallace III, Scott Saundersand Matt Hart. Wallaceand Kane fell back in the prefinalas Saunders took the win.Wallace fought his way backup to 2nd and started outsiderow one for the final. Saunderswas the quickest in the finaland looked good for the firstplace trophy.
