GUS9 ISLE OF MAN GOVERNMENT UNIFIED SCHEMEDEFERRED ILL HEALTH RETIREMENT APPLICATION FORMFor Deferred Members – ill health retirement benefits will be calculated using the accrual rate at age65 in the Standard section (Section 1) unless you are a fire fighter (in which case the age 65 rate inSection 7 is used). This provides benefits at the rate of 1.5% (2.23% for a fire fighter) of FinalPensionable Pay multiplied by your <strong>Ill</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Pensionable Service (earned to date and enhanced by theservice you could have undertaken to age 65 or age 55 if a fire fighter). If you work part time, anyenhancement to service will be reduced to take account of this. Although your benefits are being paidbefore age 65, they will not be subject to a reduction as a result of this early payment.For Existing Deferred Members – ill health retirement benefits will be current value of yourpreserved benefits, as outlined in your annual benefits statement.<strong>Ill</strong> health definitionsFor the purpose of ill-health retirement benefits the following expressions have been defined. Thisreflects the definitions within the Scheme regulations:Appropriate medical treatment: medical treatment advised by a medical practitioner (either yourown general practitioner or a registered specialist medical practitioner to whom you may have beenreferred) that is normal to receive for the condition(s) in your application for ill-health retirementbenefits.Gainful Employment: means employment, whether with an Employing Authority or not, in respect ofwhich a member’s annual earnings equal or exceed the higher of:20% of the rate of annual earnings applicable to the Member on the day before the first day ofsickness absence, increased in respect of each 12 month period after that date, in line with theinflationary index used for the pensions Increase (Annual Review) Order, made by Treasury andapproved by Tynwald; andThe annual rate of the Lower Earnings Limit (LEL) determined annually by the Department ofSocial Care.Upper Tier <strong>Ill</strong>-<strong>Health</strong> Criteria: ill health or mental or physical incapacity that renders the personincapable of Gainful Employment in circumstances where the PSPA, having regard to the medicaladvice of a Registered Medical Practitioner, determines that:The ill health or incapacity is likely to continue at least until the deferred member is age 65, orin the case of a Section 7 Member (fire fighter), to age 55; or in the case of an existingdeferred member the normal pension age that their benefits are payable from; andIn the opinion of the PSPA, having sought the advice of a Registered Medical Practitioner, themember has undertaken all Appropriate Medical Treatment to reverse the ill health condition.Deferred Member: see definition on page 2 .Existing Deferred Member: see definition on page 2Annual Earnings: This is the amount of your full-time equivalent annual earnings at the date atwhich you became a deferred member.Retire from pensionable employment: your employment ends on the grounds of ill-health.3
