April 1, 2013Capital Campaign UpdateOn behalf of Charity Navigator, I wish to congratulate Old Dartmouth Historical Society/NewBedford Whaling Museum on achieving our coveted 4-star rating for sound fiscal managementand commitment to accountability and transparency.Over $6 million has been pledged to the Museum’s capitalcampaign since 2011, the Trustees report. Leading the campaignare two $1 million donations and two $500,000 matchingchallenge grants.“Trustees are elated by the generosity of the many donorssupporting this campaign - especially during such difficulteconomic times,” said John N. Garfield, Jr., Chairman of theBoard of Trustees. “Because of their outstanding generosity,we are free of debt, we have grown the endowment to $7.6million (up from a low of $3.5 million in 2008) and have investedsignificantly in educational programs. This philanthropycomes on top of donations to operations which account forapproximately $2 million annually.”The Museum embarked upon the capital campaign in 2011with a goal of raising $10M for the purposes of eliminating a$2.1 million debt, building the endowment, and constructinga new Educational Center and Research Library on its JohnnyCake Hill campus. Co-Chairs of the capital campaign areGeorge B. Mock III, President of Nye Lubricants and residentof Mattapoisett, and Donald S. Rice of New York City andMattapoisett.“The immediate objective to erase all debt is complete and wewill celebrate this accomplishment with a symbolic “Burn theBond” ceremony at the Annual Members’ Meeting in May.The endowment enjoyed an unexpected, yet marvelous boostwith an anonymous $1 million gift followed by a $500,000challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanitiesin 2011,” states Mock. “Now we are well positioned, programmatically, organizationally and fiscally, to take on thelong sought-after goal of centralizing all museum operations onone campus through the construction of an educational wing.”For over a decade, Trustees recognized the need for constructinga facility dedicated to education and scholarship on theJohnny Cake Hill campus. Programs have long since grownbeyond available capacity and there is an urgent need for dedicatedclassroom space. Moreover, collections, staff, and volunteersare divided between two campuses (the latter located ina converted bank 3 blocks away). Bolstering the case is an 8%increase in attendance in 2012 over 2011, to 93,000. Schoolvisitation accounted for 12,000 visits. Additionally with theBuildings & Grounds CommitteeEdward M. Howland II, ChairJohn W. BraitmayerWilliam do CarmoRoy EnoksenDavid N. Kelley, IIEugene LonerganJoseph McDonoughDon RiceDonald SmythGurdon B. Wattlesnew space, the Museum estimates that it can increase thequantity and quality of current free and discounted educationprograms and services offered to the community (estimated atover $250,000 per annum).Boosted by a $1 million leadership gift from the New YorkCommunity Trust – Wattles Family Charitable Trust Fund, theproject is off to a strong start. Other major gifts followed shortlythereafter, including a $500,000 matching challenge fromThe Manton Foundation. The Museum is half way into a $5million construction goal. “We hope to secure the rest of thefunds over the next year and break ground in 2014,” said Rice.“Major donors are expressing a sense of confidence in the Museumand its educational mission,” said Garfield. “The Trusteeshave focused attention on educational initiatives and howwe can best serve our community. A central component to fulfillingthis mission is building an efficient and well equipped21st century classroom and research facility on our JohnnyCake Hill campus.”Campaign Supporters$1,000,000+AnonymousThe New York Community Trust – WattlesFamily Charitable Trust Fund$500,000+The Manton FoundationNational Endowment for the Humanities$250,000+Nancy & Jack BraitmayerCile & Bill HicksMassachusetts Cultural Council - CulturalFacilities Fund$200,000+AnonymousBarbara & Paul FerriNye Lubricants$100,000+Babbitt Steam Specialty Co.BayCoast BankCommunity Foundation of Southeastern MA- Acushnet Foundation FundEstate of Betty KnowlesThe Upstream FoundationAnne B.
