RS Nov-Dec Brochure 2012-2_Layout 1 16/10/2012 12:56 Page 6 Nov (cont) WED 14TH: (Doors 6pm / £25.00 - £40.00) THE JAZZ PASSENGERS Legendary New York Downtown group, the Jazz Passengers were founded in 1987 by Roy Nathanson and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes in order to bring lively humour and entertainment back into modern jazz. The name, a takeoff on Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, signifies that the musicians are merely along for a wild ride. The band also includes percussionist E.J. Rodriguez, bassist Brad Jones (a cohort of Elvin Jones and Muhal Richard Abrams), Steely Dan touring vibist Bill Ware and guitarist Marc Ribot, who has appeared on albums by noted singer/songwriters Elvis Costello and Tom Waits. Nathanson and Fowlkes met while playing in the pit band for the Big Apple Circus, which gave them the opportunity to play the Charles Mingus music they loved and pay the bills as well! Don’t miss this unique chance to catch one of jazz’s greatest voices. Hailed by Time Out as the “last of the great jazz divas” and arguably the finest jazz singer of her generation, Dee Dee Bridgewater sang with Roy Ayers and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis orchestra in the ‘70s and appeared in the Broadway musical The Wiz. But it wasn’t until the late '80s and a series of fantastic albums for the Verve label that she received international acclaim, including a Grammy award-winning celebration of Ella and more recently, recordings of French Chanson, Kurt Weill and ‘To Billie With Love’, a heartfelt celebration of Billie Holiday. It was after the Billie Holiday show at the Barbican in 2010 that she became stranded in London due to a volcanic ash cloud preventing air flight and performed an impromptu set at the club. She had such a great time that she vowed to come back, and after last year’s massively sold out five night run when she had so much fun, she promised to return again. SUN 18TH: (Doors 6.30pm / £20.00 - £30.00) CHRIS DAVE AND THE DRUMHEDZ Braylon Lacy (bs), Chris Dave (drs), Kebbi Williams (sax), Isaiah “Sharkey” Thomas (gtr), Cleo “Pookie” Sample (keys). Superb, effortlessly funky drummer from Houston Texas who has played with Adele, D’Angelo, Beyoncé, Kenny Garrett, Terence Blanchard, Wynton Marsalis, Me’shell N’Degeocello, Lalah Hathaway, Ledisi, Sonny Rollins, Mos Def, Erykah Badu and a whole host more, but probably best known at Ronnie’s for his roof-raising performances with the Robert Glasper Trio/Experiment. Expect blues classics from Eric Clapton, BB King, Freddie King, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Albert King, Peter Green, Howlin' Wolf, Robert Cray amongst others. There are few sounds in jazz as exciting as the rambunctious, hard-swinging 14 piece Mingus Big Band, but then there have been few musicians and composers as dynamic and driven as the great, late Charles Mingus who died in 1979. During his own lifetime the great composer often struggled to keep a big band together and although his small group recordings are amongst the greatest in jazz, it was always the voicings of the larger ensemble that Mingus wrote for. This then is a unique chance to hear some of the most exciting music in jazz heard how the composer wanted it to be heard. Under the artistic direction of Sue Mingus, the Mingus Big Band performed every Thursday night from 1991 to 2004 at Fez under Time Cafe in New York City. It maintained weekly residencies in the city from then until October 2008, when it began “Mingus Mondays” at Jazz Standard.
