Volvo 240 seriesbuilt for theindividualPrestige, quality and reliability areessential in any car where relaxed, comfortable driving is to be a way of life. You will find these qualities and more inthe famous Volvo 240 series. Sit behind thewheel. Immediately you will appreciatewhy Volvo is considered to be one of theworld's most exclusive cars. See foryourself how every detail is designed toenhance your driving experience. However, the Volvo is more thanscientifically tested seats and dashboards. The whole car has evolved through yearsof development to make driving apleasure. In the 200 series particularattention has been given to the handlingand roadholding. This is to ensure the caris easy to handle and will respond in eventhe most difficult circumstances. The twists and turns of country lanes arehandled with ease and comfort because ofthe unique combination of engineeringexpertise coupled with a genuine concernto create the environment which ensuresthe comfort and safety of the driver and hispassengers. In the 244 Saloon and 245 Estate Car,Volvo's world famous standards ofconstruction and durability are matched bythe fine quality of finish, the completespecification and the fact that allcomponents undergo rigorous qualitycontrol procedures. On the following pages, you will see inmore detail the real benefits a Volvo offers. But to truly appreciate a Volvo you mustdrive it.The 240 series range consists of the 244 DLand 244 GL Saloon models, and the 245 DLand 245 GL Estate Cars. The GL's havepowerful fuel injection engines whilst theDL's utilise a carburettor.

Relaxed driving -but you arealways in controlVolvo owners drive more miles than theaverage driver. So Volvo has paidparticular attention to making the driverand passenger seats as comfortable aspossible.Since most people first experience fatiguei n the lumbar region of their back and intheir legs we have even further improvedour famous adjustable lumbar support inthe front seats. We have also improved thedesign of the seat cushion to provide moresupport for the thighs and the slightlyconcave backrest keeps you secure whencornering. The entire seat has anextremely wide range of adjustment to suityour individual driving position; it can beplaced in an infinite number of positionsfore and aft; the backrest is continuouslyadjustable; the seat can be raised andlowered, both front and rear to achieve thebest setting for you. Integral headrestraints which do not obstruct yourvision, are also standard. In addition thehigh performance 244/245 GL is fitted withan electrically heated driving seat. The world renowned Volvo seat though isonly one feature of the 240 series. There isalso the exceptional comprehensivespecification, the famous heating andventilation system designed for Swedishwinters, the easy to read instruments, large boot space and the fascia layout hereare only some of the other attributes of thetotal `Volvo experience'.The front and rear edges of the seat can be raised andlowered to fit your particular requirements in terms ofleg length and thigh support. Even the foot angles areprecisely calculated in order to avoid tired legs onlong journeys. The rear window is electrically heated to ensure clearrear vision even under the severe conditions found inthe Arctic Circle.

From the driving seat, a Volvo provides almost totallyunrestricted all round vision. The corner pillars areno wider than the distance between your eyes. Thusyou 'see round' them. The interior rear view mirrorand the large (138 cm 2 ) anti-dazzle outside doormirror provide excellent rear vision.Twelve air intake points provide extremely efficientthrough flow ventilation. You can also adjust thesupply of warm or cool air to your exactrequirements. There is a quiet running three-speedfan. Separate nozzles keep the side windows mistfree. In a Volvo it is possible to have hot air on yourfeet and cool air on your face. The seating angle and distance to the controls arecarefully matched to suit one another.

Volvo have respectfor the unexpectedFrom lane changing in city traffic to thesudden changes of direction necessary inan emergency, a car must behave in asafe, predictable manner. As handling androadholding characteristics changeaccording to road conditions it is importantfor the driver to react in a calm andcontrolled way.Through an extensive researchprogramme involving experienced testand rally drivers as well as every-daymotorists, Volvo have created a car withexceptional characteristics. In a Volvo 240series the driver can control almost everysituation, even extreme emergencies, using normal driving techniques. The illustration on the right shows how thecar behaves when cornering under normaldriving conditions (unbroken line). Inextreme situations (broken line) wei nstinctively expect the car to behave in thesame way. If the actual behaviour of thecar does not coincide with theseexpectations, as in the case of A or B, thenthere is considerable risk of the driverlosing control of the car completely. AVolvo behaves as you would expect it to,because Volvo have 'respect for theunexpected'.A car that reacts quickly without surprisingthe driver contributes enormously todriving safety. The outstanding road-holding of the 240 series is dueto a number of factors, for example, the precision rackand pinion steering, the spring strut front suspensionand a live rear axle with coil springs and an anti-rollbar that provides the wide steel belted radial ply tyreswith maximum road contact area.

If one of the brake circuits fails, the 244 and 245 canstill be braked without increasing the tendency to skidand retain 80% of braking power. Moreover, it doesnot matter which brake circuit fails. Some of ourcompetitors, with other types of braking systems, dorequire longer stopping distances. They also have atendency to skid when their best circuit is out ofoperation. All Volvo 240 series cars are fitted with disc brakes aswell as relief valves which prevent the rear wheelsfrom locking up before the front wheels duringemergency braking. The unique triangle-split dualcircuit braking system provides you with 80% ofbraking even if one circuit were to fail. Directionalstability is maintained by both front wheels beingbraked simultaneously.I n most cars if one of the brake circuits should fail it isnecessary to press extremely hard on the brakepedal to operate the brakes. This is not true in aVolvo. All 240 series cars feature a stepped boremaster cylinder. This ensures that pedal pressuredoes not increase to any significant extent, even ifone of the circuits should fail. The Volvo test tracks are used not only to learn aboutcars, but also to investigate how a wide variety ofdrivers respond to critical situations on the road.If sudden changes of direction are required, the 240series still exhibits its exceptional road holdingcapabilities.Weight distribution is vitally important to handling androad holding. The 240 series has ideal weightdistribution between front and rear axles.

Volvo safetyalegend in itsown timeMany of the features which have beenstandard in Volvo cars for years are nowrequired by law in many countries. The 240series, therefore, has won an internationalreputation for both its active and passivesafety features. The 240 has been designed to reduce thestresses to driver and passenger in theunfortunate event of a collision. Feature byfeature, the cars are built up in such a wayas to provide the highest degree ofprotection possible. To cushion the impactof a collision there are energy-absorbingcrumple zones both front and rear. Theextended front provides additionalprotection by absorbing the initial impact. The picture to the right shows some of thefeatures which contribute to the superiorsafety characteristics of the 240 series.1. The seat is specially secured to thechassis, so that it will not loosen understress.2. The inertia reel seat belts (front andrear) are standard. There is also a flashingwarning lamp to remind you to use yourseat belt.3. Integral head restraints provide effectiveprotection from `whiplash' injuries.4. The steering column collapses in fivestages. It has a large padded surface toensure additional protection.5. The contemporary styled dashboardhas also been designed to ensuremaximum protection in the event of heavyimpact. The front end absorbs the impact of a collision. Thus itdecreases the risk of serious injuries.

The external crumple zones progressively collapseduring a collision. The occupants are protected by theworld famous 'Volvo Safety Cage'.Recently the National Traffic Safety Administration inthe United States tested 21 of the most popular cars inthe 2500-3500 pound weight class. They found theVolvo 240 series to have the best safety specification. This is living proof of Volvo's commitment to qualityconstruction and safety engineering. The Volvo steering wheel provides five-fold safety:1. the lower steering shaft gives way. 2. the steeringshaft compresses. 3. the steering column slidesforwards and downwards. 4. the steering wheelattachment 'gives way'. 5. the padded area over thecentre of the steering wheel provides furtherprotection. To protect passengers from side impacts there aretubular reinforced bars in the side doors. There arealso extra strong latches to prevent doors burstingopen. The petrol filler cap is fitted directly to the filler pipe, which is installed in a resilient rubber sleeve. Thisdecreases the risk of fuel leakage.Volvo engineering and pioneering work has wonmany awards in Sweden, Britain, the United Statesand throughout the world.

Prestigious, reliable, safe and alwaysa pleasure to driveAll Volvos have an exceptionally smallturning circle which allows you tomanouvre in a confined space. This meansa Volvo 240 car is easier to park than manysmall cars. The instrumentation and dashboard layouthave been arranged to enhance yourdriving experience. The fascia is finishedi n matt black, to reduce reflection and eyestrain. A bulb integrity sensor lights up ifone of the dipped headlights, tail light, orstop light bulbs fail. There is a warninglamp if one of the brake circuits fails. Anaccurate quartz clock, cigar lighter,i nfinitely variable heater and tripmeter areall standard. The Volvo engineTwo types of 2.1 litre four cylinder enginesare available in the 240 series. Both arebuilt in Volvo's quality controlled factories.First is a carburettor version producing 100bhp (DIN), second, the more powerfulsporty 123 bhp (DIN) unit with continuousfuel injection (CI). This engine is also fittedwith a transistorised, contactless ignitionsystem. The 240 series engines are of the crossflow type and feature an aluminiumcylinder head with an overhead cam shaft.Their design ensures faster starting underall conditions. They run on economy grade93 octane fuel.GearboxThe four speed manual gearbox is fittedwith a reverse interlock to prevent youaccidentally engaging reverse. It has alsoclearly marked positions and features ashort travel distance between gears. The244 GL and 245 GL have an electricoverdrive on top gear as standard. All 240 series cars are available with athree speed automatic transmission. Theautomatic transmission ensures that theengine always operates at its best speedand gear changing is smooth. The Volvo 244 DL and 245 DL are fitted with the B21Aengine with an output of 100 bhp (DIN) and hasexcellent torque characteristics. The automatic transmission is designed to makedriving, particularly in heavy traffic, easier.A small turning circle makes parking much easier. The turning circle is 32 ft 2 in - better than manysmaller cars.

The carpets contribute to the quiet, luxurious interior of the 240 series. Theseats are of comfortable but durableknitted textile. The luxurious 244 GL featuresleather upholstery as standard to add tothe prestige of the car. Both front seats arefitted with adjustable lumbar support, andthe rear seat provides room for threeadults. Front and rear seat belts arestandard. The integral head restraints areof the see-through type providing a betterfield of view. The front doors are fitted withspacious pockets, childproof locks on therear doors, and the rear ashtray isilluminated for easy location.A luxury environment

Long life expectancymeans fewerday to day worriesEach year the Swedish Motor VehicleTesting Authority calculates the probablelife expectancy of every different make ofcar on Swedish roads. Every year sincethis programme began Volvo's result hasbeen the best. The latest figure indicates alife expectancy of 16.7 years - almost twoyears more than the closest competitor.A long life means fewer everydayproblems, lower maintenance costs and ahigher trade-in value. But you do not needto own a Volvo for many years toexperience the quality. You notice this thevery first time you sit in one and drive it.Every feature is designed to be robust;able to withstand a long and hard life.Rain, snow and the salt of winter roads, the 240 seriesi s built to withstand the severe Nordic climate.Durability tests are carried out on all importantcomponents before they can be said to meet the' Volvo' standard of quality.

The front wheels have innerwheel mudguardsmade of polypropylene to protect against dirt andcorrosion. The bumpers are designed to withstand an impact upto 3 miles per hour without sustaining body damage. This can save you time and costly repair bills.Exposed parts of the exhaust system are aluminisedfor longer life.A Volvo body has at least 7,000 spot-welds. Each onecan support the total weight of the body of the car.Door sills are more prone to rust than most areas ofthe car. The door sills of 240 series cars are thereforetreated with special polyester plastics. They are alsokept moisture free by a constant slip stream of air.Corrosion means cost. It can also mean a dangerouscar. The exposed body sections of a Volvo are, therefore, galvanized with a coating of zinc on bothsides.
