Message from the DeanWe are proud of ourhistory and traditions,but the future is alwayson our minds.This September we kicked off Iowa Inspired: The Campaign for Iowa Law withan ambitious goal to raise $50 million by our 150 th anniversary in 2015. The conversationthat evening and in the months that followed prompted many reflections onhow Iowa Law has inspired students, alumni, faculty and staff.For more than fifty years, many of us have been inspired by Professor ArthurBonfield, the Allan D. Vestal Chair and Associate Dean for Research, and by JosephF. Rosenfield Professor and Dean Emeritus N. William Hines. Their commitmentand contributions to Iowa Law have shaped this institution in so many ways. Ourworld-class law library could easily be named The House that Bonfield Built. TheBoyd Law Building, the majority of our faculty, and many of our staff members arehere because Dean Hines recruited them. The generations of Iowa Law have benefittedimmeasurably from their vision, leadership and dedication. While the record onwhich of them arrived first is still inconclusive, the record is very clear that they haveboth earned their unofficial titles as legends of Iowa Law.Today’s and tomorrow’s students along with many of our long-time facultymembers are finding inspiration in the newest members of our faculty who bringcreative ideas and great energy to their classrooms and to the intellectual life of thelaw school. As you will read in the pages that follow, we celebrated the life and workof the late Professor David Baldus in October 2011. Although Dave is irreplaceable,we take comfort from knowing that he had a hand in naming the next generationof criminal law professors, Emily Hughes and Song Richardson. They were visitorsto our faculty while Dave was still with us, and he enthusiastically supported addingthem to our faculty ranks. We are grateful that they and the other new faculty membersyou will read more about in this issue were inspired to help us ensure the futureof Iowa Law.We are proud of our history and traditions, but the future is always on our minds.This year, Iowa Law is engaged in a year-long self-study and strategic planning toprepare for our re-accreditation site visit in Spring 2014. Our self-study committee,chaired by Professor and Associate Dean Marcella David, is hard at work examiningtrends in legal education and the legal marketplace and preparing recommendationsfor the faculty for future directions of legal education at the Iowa College of law.The committee receives regular input from a distinguished group of lawyers, businessleaders, and jurists who agreed to serve as the dean’s advisory committee onlegal education and the legal profession. A frequent theme is the need to prepareour students for success on the diverse paths their professional lives might take in arapidly changing legal profession. They should not have to look beyond the careerachievements of the 10,000 living Iowa law alumni for inspiration.In this New Year, I invite you to think about how Iowa Law inspired you.
