Human Dignity in Modern MedicineJapan catholic medical association – Its history and activitiesBuichi Ishijima, President of Japan Catholic Medical Association, JapanJapan Catholic Medical Association (JCMA) was founded in 1951, and was accepted as amember of FIAMC in 1952. The number of members in 1955 was 488. It increased up to 1,200in 1990, but it is now gradually decreasing. JCMA has participated in AFCMA from the firstCongress held in 1960 in Manila through to this year. JCMA acted as host for the 4 th and 9 thCongresses of AFCMA in 1968 and 1988 respectively.The registered members at the end of 2007 are 981, which is 0.4% of total doctors in Japan.Our activities cover the domestic and overseas affairs. The domestic activities are; 1) generalassembly, 2) publication of the bulletin and the circular once a year each, 3) seminar for themedicine-related students in every summer, 4) group study of the bioethics, 5) evangelicactivities such as public lectures and symposiums, 6) social voluntary services, such astelephone health consultation and health care services for the homeless people, etc. Theoversea activities include 1) medical-mission to Philippines in every summer, which hascontinued for more than 25 years. 2) medical or economical supports for the developingcountries, such as Cameroon, East Timor, Haiti, Vietnam and Pakistan etc. and 3) participationin FIAMC and AFCMA.We will continue and develop further our activities to promote the evangelization of Japan forthe sake of the name of Christ. Our anxious concern is the decrease of the members.
