Achilles Freedom TeamIn a moving reflection of remembrance a team of overseventy active duty members of the military from JointBase McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst and other locationsacross the United States embarked on a 172 milejourney to honor every New Jersey service memberkilled in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, EnduringFreedom and Operation New Dawn. NJ Run for theFallen began on Friday September 28 in Cape Mayand ended at the NJ Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial inHolmdel on National Gold Star Family Day, SundaySeptember 30, 2012. Each mile is dedicated to an individualNJ Hero and their family. The run team stops ateach Hero Marker to present a flag and personalizedbiographical card with the goal of creating a memorialtrail through New Jersey. This year the Run Team wasjoined by Achilles Freedom Team members SSG EarlGranville and SSG Michael Kacer along with Achillesstaff member Enza Marciante, Director of CommunityRelations for the Achilles Freedom Team. Togetherthey ran Cpl Luigi Marciante Jr.’s mile together andat the end were met by family and friends.2012 Bank of America Chicago MarathonLast October we had a combination of Freedom Teamhandcyclists, runners, and members from our AchillesCanada Chapter compete in the Bank of America ChicagoMarathon! The Bank’s Disability Advocacy Networkkicked off the weekend by hosting a special panelthat included two of our Freedom Team members,GySgt John Hayes and SSgt Michael Kacer whospoke about their road to recovery and the challengesthey have overcome to be able to compete in marathons.FBI officers were on hand to assist throughoutthe weekend. of Wounded VeteransSupport Group who volunteered for the weekend. TheBank’s Disability Advocacy group also assisted theteam throughout the day.photo shoot of the Skydeck atop the Willis Tower,pre-race pasta dinner hosted by Bank of America,and post-race pizza party hosted by Pizza 4 Patriots.Many thanks to Celink for sponsoring the FreedomTeam’s participation in this exciting weekend! Wewere grateful to have the CEO of Celink, John Le-Rose, join us at the finish line to put medals on thefinishes. Additional thank you’s go to Charlee Ratliffand Bart Vinsky of Bank of America Military Affinity2012 Detroit MarathonOur friends at General Motors hosted another epicDetroit Marathon weekend for 17 Freedom Teammembers and their families at their Renaissance CenterHeadquarters. GM designed a special locker roomfor the athletes that served as the primary meetingspace throughout the weekend. Each athlete andguest was given a duffle bag with Freedom Teamfleeces, blankets, and other goodies. Each memberhad a huge poster with their name on it in their locker.The group was greeted by GM’s CEO, Dan Akerson,who took the time to talk individually with the FreedomTeam members. That evening a Trivia themed dinnerwas hosted at the Ren-Cen Car display. It was a greatice breaker to kick off the weekend. The next morningin the Wintergarden atrium, we held a super handcycletune up that included many students from MichiganTech who, as part of their senior project, developedtwo prototype custom handcycles for FreedomTeam athletes. That evening the team was treated todinner at the Heritage Center, which houses GM’s exclusiveprivate car collection. After dinner the GIs ofm with their family, Achilles and GM staff; Bottom Center: 2012 Bank of America Chicago Marathon Freedom Team handcyclists with their victory smiles;es the finish of the Detroit Marathon.Achilles Heel 7
