(photo courtesy of Larry Sillen)A Letter From The PresidentIt is early Friday afternoon, November2nd, and I am leaving the Achilles offi ceknowing it will be the busiest weekend ofthe year. My desk is relatively clean andready for the surge of marathoners whowill come by on Monday to say hello anddiscuss the weekend’s New York CityMarathon. I make some notes outliningmy meetings for the weekend and take offfor my fi rst event, the annual get-togetherof our international chapter leaders. The meeting is progressing as expectedwhen someone interrupts and exclaimsthat the New York City Marathon has beencancelled. Is it a joke? It seems impossible. Then a second, and a third, personreiterates that, yes, the New York CityMarathon has been cancelled. How couldit happen? We have over two hundredAchilles athletes who have fl own in fromJapan, South Africa, and New Zealand, all with a dream of putting aside the challengesthey face and completing a marathon. The atmosphere is one of stunnedsilence. There is nothing to do but fi nishthe meeting and go to the next event, which is our celebratory pre-race dinnerfor our athletes and guides. How strange it is to be celebrating anevent that will not take place. It is like goingto a wedding ceremony for a couplewho at the last moment changed theirminds. We chat, we present the awards, Imake my once-a-year speech. This time, however, there are no tips for competing,no reminders to drink water, to pace yourself, and to enjoy the event. I do, however, suggest that on Sunday morning we meetat 90th Street and Fifth Avenue in CentralPark and run an informal 26.2 miles.Saturday is spent meeting with the membersof our international teams. Many areshocked by the marathon cancellation;all express their sympathy for the victimsof Hurricane Sandy. Our athletes are anempathetic group – they have all survivedtrauma and can relate to devastation. OnSunday morning there is no pre-dawnalarm clock going off. Instead, I meet hundredsof Achilles athletes and thousandsof other runners from New York and allover the world in Central Park for an informalrun. I am glad for the athletes whohave never completed a marathon thatthey have the chance to tackle the distance. There is a somewhat hollow feelingthough, without all the trademarks ofthe NYC Marathon, including the sights, smells, and incredible crowds. Achillesathletes, like New Yorkers, are resilient.Looking ahead is Boston in April, where Iwill complete my forty-sixth marathon.www.achillesinternational.org

Achilles Kids "Korner"It's been a very busy year for our AchillesKids school program. We havewelcomed several more chaptersto the fold - two new programs inRoanoke, Virginia and outpostsin Mantua, New Jersey andPhoenix, Arizona. There arealso new chapters bloomingin NYC and so as we getcloser and closer to spring,Achilles Kids continues toblossom! Not only are the number ofchapters growing, but the numberof miles our students are rackingup is soaring. Since the additionof new intermediate goals (and awards!)to our program this year, we have seen a dramaticrise in the number of miles and in how quickly themembers are reaching those levels. Indeed, by theend of January, we had twice the number of halfmarathonersthan in previous years, and we alsohave 75 students who have completed the virtualmarathon. Most exciting, there are at least 30 ultramarathoners:students who have completed two ormore marathons. Simply astounding! One of the new enhancements to our program thisyear is that students who run, walk or roll 13.1 milesreceive a beautiful half-marathoner medal - a very fittingaward for their accomplishment. We've alreadyawarded 1,000 medals with more reaching that goalevery week. And at the rate our Achilles Kids are going,we expect to have 3,500 students complete theentire 26.2 mile virtual marathon by the end of thisschool year - 400 more than last year. With thanksto several generous donors, we are incredibly proudto announce that once again we will be providing afree pair of running shoes to each and every one ofour marathoners. So - keep racking up those milesAchilles Kids!Meanwhile, the Achilles Kids weekend program hasbeen extra exciting.
