Our PlanWhere is <strong>Indian</strong> <strong>Springs</strong>?<strong>ESL</strong> @ <strong>Springs</strong> offers opportunities for internationalstudents in grades 6 - 11 to experience American culture andgain exposure to an American independent school.<strong>Indian</strong> <strong>Springs</strong> is located 15 miles south of Birmingham,the largest city in Alabama. The campus is spacious withmore than 350 acres of land, including a lake and an organicgarden.Our location offers many American cultural opportunitiesfor travel to popular cities like Atlanta, GA, and Nashville,TN. There are plenty of places to shop and dine.This intensive and academic-driven program is open tointernational students who possess a working knowledge ofthe English language and are able to communicate on basicverbal and written levels. The curriculum is comprehensivewith stimulating classes that improve and expandcommunication skills in English speaking, listening, writingand reading.<strong>Indian</strong> <strong>Springs</strong> has been offering educational opportunitiesduring the academic school year to students from differentcountries throughout the world. <strong>Indian</strong> <strong>Springs</strong> is nationallyrecognized as one of the top schools in the United States.<strong>Springs</strong> is a private, college preparatory boarding and dayschool with a reputation for high academic standards.

ApproachIn the classroom, <strong>ESL</strong> students are divided by skill level,regardless of age. All students are evaluated when they arriveand placed into classes based on core English competencies.This proven method for learning places students inenvironments where they are properly challenged, paced andsupported.While courses are taught according to ability to digestinformation and to apply acquired knowledge, the use ofprogressive teaching principles allows students who qualifyto move easily up levels of study as they master essentialskills.In the residence halls and in extracurricular activities,students are separated by age. Each group has its owndormitory supervisors, activity leaders and teachingassistants. CurriculumThe <strong>ESL</strong> program concentrates on improving English skillsin speaking, listening, writing and reading. Each courseis specifically designed to allow students to learn theseskills through different techniques, subjects and interactiveenvironments. Among many other things, all students willbe asked to attend vocabulary and listening labs, createculminating class projects or presentations, and prepare forthe TOEFL test. The following are a sample of the coursesoffered in the <strong>ESL</strong> program:English SkillsThis course focuses on reading comprehension, writing,grammar and conversation.United States History and GeographyThe course explores the important people, events andthemes that have shaped the country’s heritage andgeography. Students will study many aspects of life in theUnited States, including the development of the country’straditions and customs.Listening and SpeakingA creative yet demanding approach engages students withformal and conversational speaking and listening skills.Study SkillsStudents will engage in library research, time-management,test preparation, note-taking strategies, organizing andhandling homework loads, and navigating the Internet forresearch purposes.


Outside the ClassroomFacultyWith a dedicated and professional faculty, students willhave the opportunity to experience life both academicallyand socially at an independent boarding school. Withdiverse faculty and extensive <strong>ESL</strong> curriculum, students willbe taught by lead teachers throughout the day, assisted byteacher assistants, and supervised by student life staff.TechnologyAt the <strong>ESL</strong> @ <strong>Springs</strong> Summer Program, all students willhave the opportunity to use technology on a daily basis.<strong>Indian</strong> <strong>Springs</strong> will be one of the first summer programs touse the new Apple iPad in the classroom. The Apple iPadwill be loaded with all texts and learning materials.Students will also be able to access WiFi in their rooms andbe able to use the computers in the library and technologylab.Student PortfolioStudents, with the assistance of the faculty, will construct aportfolio of work during the four-week program. Students’portfolios will include all placement and exit testing,writing, grammar and technology exercises. The portfoliowill also include all graded papers. The portfolio can beforwarded on to prospective schools if he or she is interestedin applying to an independent school in the future.Extracurricular and Recreational ActivitiesActivities include shopping at local malls, trips to themovies, and, of course, visits to area amusement parks. TheVerizon Wireless Amphitheater is right down the road withan exciting summer schedule of music concerts.Students will also have the opportunity to use our athleticfacilities, play soccer or basketball, or even hike at OakMountain State Park, which is adjacent to campus.Trips and Fun, Fun, FunWeekend trips will include major U.S. cities such asAtlanta, GA, to visit CNN, The World of Coca-Cola, theGeorgia Aquarium and other sites. Students will also take atrip to Nashville, TN, and visit the Alabama Gulf Coast fora day at the beach.

The family submits deposit or full payment via wireor check process.Visa ProcessInternational students who visit the United States, includingfor summer programs, are expected to obtain a B-2 visa.Families are responsible for securing this visa through theircountry’s embassy or consulate.<strong>Indian</strong> <strong>Springs</strong> <strong>School</strong> does not issue F-1 visas for studentsonly studying during its summer programs.Visa OptionsB-2 visa (tourist visa)Students who only plan to attend the summer program inthe United States may have the option of obtaining a B-2visa instead of the F-1.
