Barr, Jr., JD ’66 (Butch) has been named among the Legal Elite for CivilLitigation in the Virginia Business Magazine. Butch is with the law firm <strong>of</strong> Kaufman &Canoles PC in Norfolk, Virginia.<strong>Class</strong> <strong>of</strong> 1969Hal J. Bonney Jr., JD ’69 passed away on January 22, <strong>2012</strong>. He taught at Norview High<strong>School</strong>, was Headmaster <strong>of</strong> Douglas MacArthur Academy and taught classes for the University<strong>of</strong> Virginia, the College <strong>of</strong> <strong>William</strong> and <strong>Mary</strong> and Regent University <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>. He was aJudge <strong>of</strong> the United States Bankruptcy Court for twenty-five years and served as President <strong>of</strong>the National Conference <strong>of</strong> Bankruptcy Judges. Since retiring, Judge Bonney was active in thefilm industry and was a member <strong>of</strong> the American Film Institute, the British Film Institute andthe American Cinematheque.<strong>Class</strong> <strong>of</strong> 1971Nicholas J. DeRoma, JD ’71 has been appointed to the Board <strong>of</strong> Directors <strong>of</strong> DialogicIncorporated. Dialogic, Inc. is a leading provider <strong>of</strong> communication technologies.<strong>Class</strong> <strong>of</strong> 1972Bruce R. Harris, JD ’72 passed away on February 21, <strong>2012</strong>. He was 66 years old. After lawschool he worked for the Interior Department as a lawyer with the board <strong>of</strong> land appeals. In1998, he was named a judge and oversaw cases involving the use <strong>of</strong> public lands. Heeventually served as deputy chief administrative judge.Thomas S. Shadrick JD ’72 has been named among the Legal Elite’s in the Virginia BusinessMagazine. Tom is with The McCammon Group in Virginia Beach, Virginia.<strong>Class</strong> <strong>of</strong> 1973John A. McKinney Jr., JD ’73 was the inaugural recipient <strong>of</strong> the National Environmental <strong>Law</strong>Moot Court Competition (NELMCC) Distinguished Contributor Award. The award ispresented to an individual who has exhibited their support through the dedication <strong>of</strong> time,energy and financial resources to the NELMCC, the preeminent environmental law moot courtcompetition in the United States. John is a member <strong>of</strong> Wolff & Sampson PC and represents


clients facing serious environmental and occupational safety and health issues. Earlier in hiscareer he served as in-house counsel. He represented the plaintiff who was injured in a head-on collision witha truck. Michael E. McGinty JD ’83 has been promoted to Circuit Court in the Ninth Judicial Circuit.George C. Vitelli, JD ’85 passed away on April 29 th . He worked at the Washington law firm<strong>of</strong> Steptoe & Johnson and at a private firm in Hartford, Connecticut before joining the JusticeDepartment in 1997.Thomas L. Hanley, JD ’85 has joined the Stradley Ronon’s Washington <strong>Law</strong> Office. Tomrepresents public and private companies in a variety <strong>of</strong> industries including informationtechnology, life sciences, consulting, transportation, telecommunications andmedia/entertainment. Prior to his move, Tom was an attorney at the SEC’s Division <strong>of</strong>Corporation Finance. He is an author and frequent speaker.<strong>Class</strong> <strong>of</strong> 1985Michael J. Baader JD ’85, partner in charge <strong>of</strong> the Baltimore <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Venable LLP, has beennamed chair <strong>of</strong> the Economic Alliance <strong>of</strong> Greater Baltimore’s board <strong>of</strong> directors. Nicholas works at Woods Rogers PLC in the business/corporate department.Virginia K. Fogg, JD ’87 was awarded with Reunion Distinguished Alumna Award on April14 at her 25 th Reunion. Ginny is General Counsel for Norfolk Southern Corporation in Norfolk,Va. The award is one <strong>of</strong> two honors given each spring by the Association to recognizeoutstanding alumni <strong>of</strong> classes celebrating their tenth and twenty-fifth graduations from lawschool. Reunion classes nominated class members for the honors and the Association Boardmade the final selection <strong>of</strong> awardees. Dean Davison M. Douglas presented the award to Ginnyduring Alumni Weekend's Reunion Dinner held at Kingsmill Resort in <strong>William</strong>sburg.Robert J. Hicks, JD ’87 was named a “Top Ranked” attorney and “Leader in Their Field” byChambers USA in its <strong>2012</strong> edition. Robert is with the firm <strong>of</strong> Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP inIndianapolis, Indiana.Cynthia Hudson, JD ’87, City Attorney for Hampton Virginia, has been chosen as one <strong>of</strong> the“Influential Women <strong>of</strong> Virginia” by Virginia <strong>Law</strong>yers Media. She is the only honoree selectedfrom Hampton. The program recognizes outstanding efforts <strong>of</strong> women in Virginia in all fields,including law, business, health care, education and the arts. Cynthia has served as the city <strong>of</strong>Hampton’s deputy city attorney for 10 years.<strong>Class</strong> <strong>of</strong> 1988L. Lee Byrd, JD ’88 was elected President <strong>of</strong> Sands Anderson PC. He previously served as thechair <strong>of</strong> the business and pr<strong>of</strong>essional litigation practice and as a member <strong>of</strong> the firm’s board <strong>of</strong>directors. He has been a shareholder <strong>of</strong> the firm since 1998 and a member <strong>of</strong> the board since2007. His practice involves a variety <strong>of</strong> business litigation relating to contracts, commercialleases, easements, insurance coverage and legal malpractice.<strong>William</strong> Preston Henderson, JD ’88 (Billy) died on April 13 th <strong>of</strong> complicationsfrom a stroke. Billy was 52 lived in Los Angeles, California. While attending <strong>Law</strong><strong>School</strong>, Billy was the third year representative for the Student Council and was alsothe leading member <strong>of</strong> The Black American <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong> Association. Aftercompleting law school, Billy moved to California where he worked for severalyears with the Shutt <strong>Law</strong> Firm and was presently working as a ManagementAnalyst for the City <strong>of</strong> Los Angeles.David H. Sump, JD ’88 has been promoted to partner at Troutman Sanders LLC, Norfolk,Virginia. David focuses his practice on Maritime <strong>Law</strong> and Government Contracts.


David E. Watson, JD ’88 has been appointed to the Race Track Leasing Commission as arepresentative for the 22 nd District Agricultural Association in San Diego Fair Board. Bonner, JD ’93 is the Senior Counsel for Field Operations for the TSA-Office <strong>of</strong> theChief Counsel.Christopher K. Barry-Smith, JD ’93 was appointed by Attorney General Coakley as DeputyAttorney General. As Deputy Attorney General, he will be responsible for supervising theBusiness and Labor and Public Protection and Advocacy Bureaus. He has served as the Chief<strong>of</strong> the Public Protection and Advocacy Bureau, Consumer Protection Division Chief, and as anAssistant Attorney General in the Consumer Protection Division. As part <strong>of</strong> his duties, he hasled the efforts to address the mortgage foreclosure crisis, false claims and other important publicprotection issues in the Commonwealth.

Lacrecia is with the law firm <strong>of</strong> Taylor English Duma LLP.On Friday, March 23, at the First Annual Louisiana Diversity & Leadership Conference, Cadewas awarded and recognized for her tireless efforts and achievements as the founding president<strong>of</strong> the Louisiana Association <strong>of</strong> Black Women Attorneys.

Schneider Award bySecretary Ray LaHood and General Counsel Robert Rivkin <strong>of</strong> the U.S. Department <strong>of</strong>Transportation. The award is given annually to the outstanding U.S. Department <strong>of</strong>Transportation attorney who has been at the bar less than ten years.


Stephen and Jennifer Thibodeau, JD, ’02 welcomed Elizabeth Catriona Thibodeau to theirfamily. Elizabeth was born March 14, <strong>2012</strong>.<strong>Class</strong> <strong>of</strong> 2003Paul A. Ainsworth, JD ’03 joined Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox P.L.L.C. in WashingtonDC as Of Counsel in the Litigation Practice Group. He concentrates his practice in the area <strong>of</strong>patent litigation and has represented clients in patent cases in federal courts and before theUnited States International Trade Commission in the pharmaceutical, consumer products,electronics, and e-commerce industries. He has experience representing clients in thepharmaceutical industry in litigation arising under the Hatch-Waxman Act. After law school,Ainsworth served as a law clerk for the Honorable Sue L. Robinson, United States DistrictJudge, District <strong>of</strong> Delaware. Prior to joining the firm, he was a senior associate in theWashington DC <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Covington & Burlington LLP.
