DRAFT RECOMMENDED PRACTICE FOR RFID-BASED INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS3 RFID-BASED INVENTORY MANAGEMENT RECOMMENDEDPRACTICE3.1 OVERVIEWThis section presents the recommended practice of utilizing the ISO 18000-6C/EPCglobalClass 1 Gen-2 RFID communication standard for PHY/MAC interoperability. Annex Bprovides additional information, discussion, and application profiles associated with therecommended practice.The recommended practice pertains to RFID systems that provide stored data only, asopposed to sensor telemetry. Applications are considered where no direct active tag power isrequired, which necessitates short-range communication and Interrogator-Talk-First (ITF)protocols. (See reference [D4] for supporting technical background.)3.2 RECOMMENDED PRACTICE3.2.1 EPCGLOBAL CLASS 1 GENERATION-2 UHF RFID PROTOCOLFor onboard spacecraft or internal-vehicle inventory management via wireless RFID, the airinterface standard shall be the EPCglobal Class 1 Generation-2 UHF RFID Protocol forcommunications at 860 MHz – 960 MHz (references [1] and [2]).NOTES1 In 2006, ISO approved the EPC Class 1 Gen-2 standard as an amendment to its18000-6 standard, as ISO 18000-6C.2 Level of interoperability: Specific applications may necessitate greaterinteroperability at the Application layer than is provided by the recommendedpractice. For maximum Application layer interoperability the utilization of the LowLevel Reader Protocol (LLRP) described in B2 is recommended.3.2.2 RESTRICTIONS/HAZARDS3.2.2.1 Explosive EnvironmentsCaution should be exercised with respect to compliance with governing regulations for RFtransmissions, particularly in potentially explosive environments.3.2.2.2 RF ExposureAlso, due consideration should be given to avoid RF exposure that exceeds limits establishedby the local governing regulations.CCSDS 881.0-R-1 Page 3-1 October 2011
