<strong>E13</strong> News<strong>E13</strong> Pupils Head Up 100 Days ofA group of Upton Cross pupils represented <strong>E13</strong><strong>Learning</strong> <strong>Community</strong> at the Newham launch of 100Days of Peace around the Olympics. Building onthe original Greek truce tradition of safe passagefor Olympic athletes, London Citizens organised 18rallies across the city, each spelling out the word“PEACE” as a police helicopter fly-by took photos.A r o u n d 1 5 0people gatheredin Forest Gate forthe Newhamrally. Over 3000p a r t i c i p a t e dacross London.The Upton Crosspupils, wholink in withour Schools’Council LocalS a f e t yC a m p a i g n ,sang their“It’s All AboutS a f e t y ,<strong>Summer</strong> <strong>2012</strong>Issue No.15Safety, Safety” song to rapturous applause, andParnika Digpal, one of our pupils, signed the PeacePledge on our behalf, alongside East Ham MPStephen Timms and a range of other communityorganisations.After the rally our contingent came back to PlaistowBroadway and spoke to the local shopkeepersabout becoming a CitySafe Zone.CitySafe involves young people and adults workingtogether on a number of initiatives to encouragelocal businesses and organisations to offer theirpremises as CitySafe Havens, pledging to report100% of crime and organising events that facilitatedialogue between police and young people. Circus Trip for Mini-Olympic Ceremonies PerformersDuring half term participants from our <strong>E13</strong> LCMini-Olympics Ceremonies Project worked atLister <strong>Community</strong> School. As well as preparingand practicing for the BIG DAY, our <strong>E13</strong> LCMini-Olympics Day on 29th June, they alsoworked with Carnival Arts Company “EmergencyExit Arts” who are one of the major contributorsto the Newham Carnival.Students made costumes and accessories totake to the Carnival which starts in CentralPark, East Ham on Saturday 21 st July andfollows the Olympic Torch Relay as it takes itsroute around Newham.Closely following Carnival creativity, the childrenwent on to try their hand at the flying trapezeand aerial silks and hoops at Circus Space inHoxton followed by MacDonalds! Needless tosay ... a great time was had by all! WhoopHoop?! Third Year for <strong>Community</strong> ShieldShield-winners Southern Road PrimaryThe thirdannual ListerC o m m u n i t yShield interschoolfootballtournamenttookplace onS o u t h e r nRoad PlayingFields onTuesday 19thJune.Plaistow Primary as runners up. They were pippedby one point by the new Shield-holders, SouthernRoad Primary School.The tournament is jointly sponsored by Lister andNewham United Football Club. Organised by Mr Hartop and colleagues, andrefereed by Lister student sports leaders, a closelyfought competition between gender-mixed teamsfrom the <strong>E13</strong> LC Primary Schools ended with4

The time for the everpopularand long-awaited <strong>E13</strong>LC <strong>Summer</strong>Play Schemes to take place!The schemes, for selected current Year 5 and6 pupils, will run Monday to Friday from 13thto 24th August.Following on our hot hits of lastyear, when we turned thecurriculum upside down and hadfun with English, Maths, Scienceand PE, this year will be bigger andbetter yet! Six yummy schemes toencourage children to participatecreatively in the subjects whichmake up the core of the newEBACC: Literacy, Numeracy, Science, ModernForeign Language - mixed with a soupcon ofArt, Media and Drama and a liberal dash ofSport, sport, sport! Olympic <strong>Summer</strong> in NewhamThis year is set to be an amazing and special time inNewham's history. To celebrate the London <strong>2012</strong>Games there will be an exciting programme ofevents and activities and there is no better time foryou to be inspired to try something new thissummer.More than 100,000 people join in Newham Council’ssummer events every year to enjoy free entertainment,live events, top musicians, local talent and somuch more. This summer really gets going with theOlympic Torch Relay visiting the Newham Show on21st July featuring the borough's biggest and bestcarnival procession ever! The fun continues withday two of the Newham Show on 22 July and then afour-day music extravaganza Under the Stars overthe August Bank Holiday from 23rd-27th August.This year, you can visit Stratford Park and CentralPark for Newham Live. She began her career as an NQT atColegrave Primary school and rapidly rose through theranks to assume her first role as Acting Head at EllenWilkinson. She followed this with subsequent headships atBrampton Primary, Southern Road Primary and after asecondment as a Borough advisor arrived at Portway in2005. She was one of the founding Heads of the <strong>E13</strong><strong>Learning</strong> <strong>Community</strong>.Maggie has led the school through a number of successfulOfsted inspections and has overseen a host of positivechanges.She will be sorely missed by staff, parents and of coursethe pupils.In September we’ll all be welcoming Michael Doughty asthe new Headteacher. 9

But times havechanged and this is not alwayseasy to achieve. The<strong>E13</strong> <strong>Learning</strong> <strong>Community</strong>a c t i o n f o r u m <strong>E13</strong>People United is promotinga Good NeighbourPledge as a small contributionto building better communitylife in Plaistow andUpton Park. It is not asking for anything unusualas commitments - you may well alreadybe fulfilling them. Would you be willing toagree to:Take care of my own living spaceso that I (and my family) do notimpact negatively on myneighbours.Treat my neighbours with respectand a positive attitude.Keep an eye out for my neighbours’interests and supportthem with practical help whenpossible.Seek opportunities to connect andcooperate with my neighboursto improve our community.If you feel able to, please make a commitmentto be an active good neighbour andsign the pledge. You can pick up a copy ofthe pledge leaflet from your school and somecommunity centres, or download it from ourwebsite (www.e13LC.org - under the <strong>E13</strong>People Utd tab). There are a few practicalexamples of what being a good neighbourcould mean too.If you want to you can display the pledge inyour kitchen as a reminder to yourself.Again, if you choose, your school, localcommunity group or organization will registeryour pledge with <strong>E13</strong> People United on yourbehalf so that we know how many peopleare taking the pledge.
