NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENTSocial Entrepreneurs Provide LeadershipOver the past several weeks, I have been reminded of the outstanding leaders who have graduatedfrom Austin College and are, in the true sense of the word, entrepreneurs. Frequently, we think of anentrepreneur as an individual who is primarily interested in generating wealth through creativeand innovative business practices. However, I have observed Austin College graduates who havebeen successful in the realm of business and are outstanding leaders in different communitiesaround the world, but while students at Austin College they were applying their creative andinnovative gifts to social issues.In essence, as we observe the students of Austin College, we see outstanding “socialentrepreneurs” who are very creative in addressing issues that might not result in financial gainbut will result in significant benefits for society. Dr. Paul Farmer, who will receive the secondAustin College Leadership Award, is a great example of a social entrepreneur. As you read aboutDr. Farmer in this magazine, you will recognize that he has used his gifts of creativity andinnovation and committed himself to the welfare of underserved people throughout the world.Although not all leaders can have the impact that Dr. Farmer has had as a social entrepreneur,there are hundreds of examples of Austin College graduates who are highly successful leaders inbusiness, government, or the non-profit area, but who started their quest for success in leadershipby being social entrepreneurs while students at Austin College.Great examples of entrepreneurship can be seen in the manner in which Austin Collegestudents responded to the Nicaraguan disaster in the late 1990s, to the tsunami that hit southeastAsia more recently, and last year, to the Katrina relief effort. In these instances, students providedthe leadership necessary to embark upon major relief efforts. Through these students’ creativity andas a result of their recognition of social needs, they charted a new course for themselves as socialentrepreneurs. It is exciting to watch our students develop their skills as entrepreneurial leaderswhile on our campus and then carry these skills into the larger community to continue theircommitment to “service,” while using their gifts to become entrepreneurs in their chosen career.This has been an exciting year for the College as we have completed the plans for the BetsyDennis Forster Art Studio Complex, now under construction, and we have watched our studentsexcel in Model UN competition, collaborative research projects with our faculty, and serviceprojects in the community.As you read this issue of the Magazine, I am sure you will reflect upon your experiences asa leader and recognize that you honed your skills as a leader through your socialentrepreneurial activities on the Austin College campus. We are proud of the success of ouralumni, and I encourage you to take great pride in the many facets of work evidenced on thecampus of your alma mater.Sincerely,Oscar C. PagePresident
