Brussels, the capital of Europe and the hub of internationalpolitics, seems an appropriate place for the lp gas industry to cometogether to discuss how the lp gas sector can and should respond tothe energy challenges of both the EU and wider European continent. With governments across the globe encouraging citizens to useenergy more efficiently, and lp gas set to play a growing role in the energymix of the future, the lp gas industry will join with policymakers and theenergy sector to discuss what the industry and governments should doto help build a sustainable and economically viable energy system.Another of the topics due to be discussed is how the lpg industry canmaximise its potential in the European and North American markets.Although both regions are considered to have mature markets, theAEGPL says its Roadmaps have demonstrated there is enormous roomfor growth in Europe. Congress delegates will take a look at howcompanies on both sides of the Atlantic are using new technologies andapproaches to bring the benefits of lpg to as many people as possible.ISSN 1362-7813. 100TH ANNIVERSARYTHE KEY TOSUCCESSRichard Roldan, president and chief executiveofficer of the National Propane Gas Associationin the US, talks about the work his organisationdoes to support its members.Richard Roldan.I was named president and chiefexecutive officer of the NationalPropane Gas Association (NPGA)in March 2002, although I startedmy tenure with the NPGA in 1995when I joined as vice president ofgovernment relations. The NPGA is the nationaltrade association of the USpropane industry in the samevein as UKLPG in the UK. Wewere originally formed in 1931as the National Bottled GasAssociation, becoming theNational Propane GasAssociation in 1988.Serving our membership iskey to being a successful tradeassociation. The role we play inthe formulation of federal lawsand regulations has saved ourmembers billions of dollars andour work continues tostrengthen the industry’sreputation as a clean, safe andreliable energy source.Today, from our headquartersin Washington, DC, we serve amembership of 3,200companies in all 50 states, with38 affiliated state or regionalassociations and members in 19foreign countries. We representevery segment of the propaneindustry, including producers, wholesalers, transporters andretailers of propane gas, as wellas manufacturers anddistributors of propaneequipment and appliances. Our industry is an importantcontributor to the US economy. In2009, the propane industry servednearly 44 million residentialconsumers, including supplyingprimary heating fuel toapproximately 7 millionhouseholds. We also deliveredenergy to an estimated 875,000commercial customers, 400,000agricultural customers and200,000 industrial customers, andprovided fuel for about 147,000vehicles and 465,000 forklifts, allof which contribute meaningfullyto the US gross domestic product(GDP) and employment.Today, the mission of theNPGA is to advance safety andto increase the use of propanethrough sound public policy.Operationally, this meansworking for members who, regardless of the area of themarket they serve, face thesame challenge – how to remainBy Lisa Thomson, policy &communications manager,UKLPGOn May 17 1912, a liquefiedpetroleum gas calledpropane began lightinglamps and cooking mealsfor John Gahring, the ownerof a humble farmhouse inWaterford, Pennsylvania,USA. Out of this singleevent came an energyindustry that, for the pastcentury, has radicallyincreased the standards ofliving for people worldwide.Considered to be animpractical fuel when it wasdiscovered, propane is nowused by millions of peopleeach day in virtually everyaspect of modern life. Thehistory of how propane hasgrown to become an energycompetitive in an environmentthat is increasingly burdened byfederal mandates. The NPGA positions itself tohelp its members face thatchallenge. In Washington, wehave 18 staff to serve ourmembers’ needs, and the teamworks to safeguard and promoteour members’ interests onissues ranging from hours ofservice regulations to clean airlegislation. We also play an importantadvocacy role. Propane Days isour premier advocacy event forthe whole US propane industry. Each year, hundreds ofmembers travel to Washington,DC, for two days of issuebriefings, guest speakers andmeetings with legislators andtheir staffs.Since 2005, Propane Dayshas served as the propaneindustry’s most importantlegislative outreach programmeand I am delighted to say thatthe event has brokenattendance records for threestraight years, growing to morethan 400 participants last year. This is one of the most effectiveways for our industry to advanceits public policy agenda in thenation’s capital.Propane Celebrates 100 Yearssource so ingrained in ourday to day lives can be foundin the individual stories of thecountless men, women andcompanies that havemoulded the industry for thepast century.Today, the UK lpg industrycontinues in this strongtradition, only now thechallenge is not being viewedas an impractical fuel, but as afossil fuel in an increasingenvironmentally consciousworld. This year, UKLPG willmark the 65th anniversary ofthe industry coming togetheras the LP Gas Associationand ALGED, the grandfathersof UKLPG, which is asconcerned now with raisingthe profile of the industry, streamlining processes andworking to ensure that theindustry is positioned to takeits place as a fuel of thefuture as they were then. This year, the US propaneindustry celebrates itscentennial anniversary.Richard Roldan, presidentand CEO of the NationalPropane Gas Association, will attend UKLPG’s fifthannual conference askeynote speaker to give hisperspective on the USmarket, and he willundoubtedly address ourexceptional fuel’s place bothin history and the future.6LP GAS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2012

THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE BEACONSTHE QUEEN’SDIAMOND JUBILEEBEACONSBullfinch has designed a diamond shaped lpgbeacon to be used as part of a series of over3,000 beacon lightings to celebrate TheQueen’s Diamond Jubilee on June 4.Over 3,000 beacons will be lit on June 4.The Queen’s Diamond Jubileecelebrations in June will includethe lighting of over 3,000beacons around the world tocommemorate Her Majesty TheQueen’s 60 year reign over theUK and as head of theCommonwealth. Her MajestyThe Queen will light the NationalBeacon at around 10.30pmfollowing a Diamond Jubileeconcert outside BuckinghamPalace on June 4.Bullfinch (Gas Equipment) Ltd,based in Birmingham, wasasked to design andmanufacture a special diamondshaped lp gas church towerbeacon that could be usedsafely as part of the beaconlightings that night.Andrew Williams, managingdirector at Bullfinch, said:“During 2010, we were asked tomake some beacons to light upthe length of Hadrian’s Wall tomark the 1,600th anniversary ofthe end of Roman rule. Wedevised 250 beacons to be lit bya team of volunteers at duskwhilst a helicopter flew overheadto record the event. It went verywell and gained a lot of interestfor the wall.“Following that, Bruno PeekOBE MVO, OPR Pageantmaster,The Queen’s Diamond JubileeBeacons, approached us to seeif we could make a beacon forchurch towers to mark TheQueen’s Diamond Jubilee. Heplanned to organise a largenumber of beacons to be lit atdusk on June 4. Many will betraditional bonfire beacons, buta good number will be thebeacon we have designed andare manufacturing.”The beacon had to producethe largest and most colourfulflame possible using a propanecylinder that could easily becarried up a church tower orsimilar building.Andrew said: “We decidedthat it would be best to have twosmaller cylinders than one largeone, and so we arerecommending two 19kgcylinders or even two 6kgcylinders in more difficultsituations. Bruno Peek alsowanted the burner on thebeacon to be diamond shaped, which was a concern, but thediamond burner has proved tobe distinctive, whilst giving acolourful, stable flame.“Another challenge was toThe diamond shaped burner gives a colourful, stable flame.keep the flame alight in windyconditions, which we achievedby adapting one of our standardblowtorch burners andrestricting the air intake to give agood yellow flame, which is theopposite of what is required in agood blowtorch! The Hadrian’sWall burner stood up well to thewind and these jubilee burnersdo too.“The beacon needed to be aseasy to use as possible and tohave the minimum number of lpgas connections, and so thebeacon comes fully assembledwith a standard folding stand tosupport the burner. The useronly has to connect the two lpgcylinders together and connectthe regulator to the manifold onone of the cylinders, which isnormal practice with lp gasappliances.“Safety is very important andso, in addition to the beaconbeing simple to set up, we areproviding two ignition wandswith each beacon in case onefails at the vital moment, aspanner, leak detecting fluid, amanifold and pigtail to link thecylinders together and full safetylighting instructions. The beaconmust be attended at all timeswhen it’s burning, and we arestressing that it must be tried outfirst at ground level to ensurethat the operators are fully awareof what is required.“We’re producing just over500 beacons, and we feelprivileged to have been asked toundertake the project. We trust itwill help make the celebrationsin June a fitting tribute to our‘long to reign over us’ monarch.”The only other Britishmonarch to achieve a reign of 60years was Queen Victoria, whoreigned for nearly 64 years from1837 to 1901. Britain has a longhistory of beacon lightingspanning many hundreds ofyears. A beacon chain, onceused for communication, hasbecome a symbol of unity and isoften the focus of nationalcelebrations.Bruno Peek said: “I’mabsolutely delighted with whatBullfinch have produced for thisspecial, unique occasion andthe company has been apleasure to work with.”Contact Bullfinch(Gas Equipment) Ltd on0121 765 2000www.bullfinch-gas.co.uk8LP GAS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2012

Their all aluminiumconstruction provides corrosionresistance, and their weight andcompact size allows them to becarried and installed by oneperson.“Both Zimmer and Torrexx areATEX approved and rated forZone 1. The uniqueheating design of Torrexxallows operation from offto full on in less than 60seconds.”Algas-SDI hasannounced two newproducts for 2012.Second Sun is aflameless, externallymounted catalytictank heater thatrequires only12VDC from avehicle battery forinitial start up.John said:“Second Sunincreasesthe vapourpressureinside anlpg vesselSecond Sun's energy is added to nature's.by augmenting the vapour beinggenerated by the first sun – theone in the sky! AEGPL CONGRESS 2012RegO Taking ControlRegO will be exhibiting a rangeof lpg control equipment onstand 83/84 at the AEGPLCongress 2012 in June.RegO is one of thelargest manufacturersof lpg controlequipment in theworld and has beenin the lpg businessfor 80 years. LastSeptember, thecompany added toits portfoliowith theA3212 actuator.purchase of Integrated GasTechnologies Ltd, based inDenmark.Peter Roberts of RegOdistributor ReManufacturingServices Ltd said: “At theAEGPL show, RegO will beexhibiting a wide range for allapplications, with particularemphasis on newdevelopments. These willinclude a new minimum lossAcme fill valve, a heavy-dutyswing check with flow indicator, electrically insulatedpigtails forundergroundtanks, upratedregulatorsand muchmore.“There aretwo items ofparticular interestthat we are proud to beA3217RA actuator.showing. Transport internalvalves have been traditionallyoperated by an air cylinder andcam. This gives no positiveindication as to the state of thevalve as, even with the cylinderclosed, the valve may still bejammed open. Two uniqueinnovations have overcome this.”The valve range is nowactuated by rotary rack andpinion actuators and the shafthas a double link to positivelyopen and pull the valve closed. An external indicator shows theexact position of the seat disc.“Checklocks used foremergency liquid withdrawal on7590U valve.domestic tanks are operated byadaptors when attaching a hoseto empty the tank. By design, some gas escapes whilst theadaptor is being fitted. Forexisting installations, a newadaptor is available thatprevents any gas leakage. As agreater aid to safety for futureinstallations, an improved designwill be on show and shouldbecome the standard for fiveinline tanks.“We’re aware that ourcustomers need stock support, and quality equipment is onlypart of the service. RegOdistributors are required to holdstock, which is backed up by amassive inventory at our centralEuropean warehouse inGermany. RegO valves stillprovide the best value for moneyof all manufacturers and comewith a ten year warranty.”Contact ReManufacturingServices Ltd on01792 224000www.rmsgaseng.comA3219RA actuator.16LP GAS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2012
