In May 2012, XJTLU receivedapproval from the Chinese Ministry of Education to launch postgraduateprogrammes at the masters and doctoral levels in collaboration with the<strong>University</strong> of <strong>Liverpool</strong>.We live in a complex and quickly changing world characterised byrapidly-spreading knowledge and increasing globalisation. They also gain a basic knowledgeof accounting, invaluable for understanding how enterprises work.Graduates will be well-positioned to work as financial economists or inrelated positions.BA International Business with a Language (UK) /BMan (China)With China increasing its role in the world economic andbusiness fields, knowledge of international business issueis becoming increasingly important for <strong>University</strong>graduates seeking roles in both international and localorganisations, This programme, apart fromproviding this knowledge to students, will alsoprovide them with an additional languageskill that will benefit them when dealingwith some companies.English and Chinese Language SupportThe Language Centre at Xi’an <strong>Jiaotong</strong>-<strong>Liverpool</strong> <strong>University</strong> providesintensive and comprehensive language instruction in both Englishand Chinese, as well as study skills support, to students across the<strong>University</strong>. With over 130 teaching staff members, the Centre aims toensure that all students acquire the study skills and English languageproficiency required to complete a British degree; to that end, itoffers specially designed modules focused on English for <strong>Academic</strong>Purposes (EAP) across the curriculum.For international students, the Centre offers intensive Chineselanguage modules as well as an introduction to Chinese culture.Transfer to the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Liverpool</strong>:2+2 and 4+XAll IBSS full-time students have the opportunity to transfer to the<strong>University</strong> of <strong>Liverpool</strong> following two different study routes, subjectto XJTLU’s policies and the students’ academic achievement.The 2+2 Study RouteIn our 2+2 study route, students pursue the first two years of theirundergraduate programme at XJTLU in Suzhou, and the final twoyears at the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Liverpool</strong> in the UK.The 4+X Study RouteStudents on the 4+X study route spend their entire degree programmeat XJTLU in Suzhou, but can apply to a Master’s degree programmeat the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Liverpool</strong> at a discounted price.All students in all undergraduate programmes will receivetwo degrees, one from XJTLU and one from the <strong>University</strong>of <strong>Liverpool</strong>, regardless of which study route they follow.

Postgraduate degrees open upmany career opportunities and help students to build theirprofessional networks nationally and internationally.The IBSS InternationalMBA for ManagersOur new International Master of Business Administration isa flexible part-time programme offered in collaborationwith the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Liverpool</strong> Management School, and isdesigned for working professionals with several years ofmanagement experience.MSc FinanceOur Master of Science in Finance programme provides students witha comprehensive knowledge of contemporary financial and economictheories and their application to the challenges that face organisationstoday. Students are introduced to key issues and theories in finance andfinancial management while expanding their skills in research,evaluation and analysis. Students considering applying for thisprogramme should have some formation in quantitative methods,statistics or econometrics, especially for students with a degree which isnot in Economics or Finance.MSc ManagementOur Master of Science in Management is a flexible and innovativeprogramme that offers a broad understanding of management,covering topics such as international business, strategy, finance,leadership, marketing and entrepreneurship. Students benefit frombusiness simulations and other activities based in real-life experiences,which help them develop practical skills and knowledge. Entry is opento anyone with an undergraduate degree in any discipline; students whoare working have the option of following the programme part-time. Thisprogramme prepares students for positions in management and assistscurrent managers to prepare for more senior roles.Planned new programmes from2014-15 (subject to validation)MSc Investment ManagementOur new Master of Science in Investment Management programme willprovide students with a solid foundation in financial markets, securitiesand investment management theories and strategies. Students willdiscover how to create optimal investment portfolios to maximise returnand minimise risk; they will explore how investment management relatesto the other areas of corporate finance; and they will learn more aboutthe financial intermediation activities of banks, brokers and investmentdealers. This programme is to be recognised by CFA (CharteredFinancial Analyst) Institute.MSc AccountingOur new Master of Science in Accounting will give students acomprehensive knowledge of issues and topics related to accountingand finance, including business strategy, corporate reporting,performance management, audit and assurance, corporate financeand governance, taxation, and business ethics. Students will developthe strong quantitative and qualitative skills that will enable them tomake realistic business recommendations and solve problems incomplex scenarios. Students are expected to gain exemptions fromall Professional Level exams for the ICAEW (Institute of CharteredAccountants in England and Wales), and will be prepared for ICAEWexams at the Advanced Level.MSc Economics and FinanceThis programme has a strong research focus and covers the followingsubject areas: macroeconomics, microeconomics and econometrics,all with an emphasis on finance. Financial economics includes theeconomics of consumer choice, insurance contracts, informationalmarket failures and credit markets and financial markets. Thisprogramme allows the student to acquire fundamental and practicalknowledge in how financial markets operate and how financial assetsare priced. Macroeconomic theory provides useful insights into modelsin macroeconomics and international financial transactions. Students’practical skills in applied econometrics would be developed in our twomodules in quantitative research techniques. In addition, financemodules cover subjects related to portfolio theory, corporate finance,investment and strategy and derivative instruments.MSc Operations and Supply Chain ManagementThis programme touches upon all aspects of effective operations andsupply chain management in a highly competitive global marketplace.Students will gain essential skills to become a strategist of the future.The programme looks at how successful operations and supply chainmanagement can shape the sales and profit objectives of a business.While studying in Suzhou, students will have the chance to obtain a fullyaccredited MSc degree from the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Liverpool</strong>.The IMBA is a two-year programme, with modules being taught onweekends at IBSS; one module will also be taught over an intensiveweek at the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Liverpool</strong> London Campus. Graduates willreceive a UK International MBA degree granted by the <strong>University</strong>of <strong>Liverpool</strong> Management School, an AACSB-accredited schoolrecognised as a world leader in management and leadership training,education and research.IBSS’s IMBA programme aims to equip participants with acomprehensive theoretical and practical understanding of modernmanagement in a global environment, along with an awareness of howorganisations can function in dynamic environments marked by political,economic, social and technological fluidity. Participants will graduatewith the core knowledge and essential skills to operate in aninternational business environment.Programme modules taught by professors from XJTLU and the<strong>University</strong> of <strong>Liverpool</strong> will focus on such important issues as LeadershipDevelopment, Strategic Operations Management, International HumanResource Management and International Marketing, among others.These modules will interweave with seminars, events with seniormanagement from international and local companies, and otheractivities that will provide an integrated and concrete learningenvironment with strong links to the real world. The learning experienceis further enriched by simulations and case studies dealing with issueson the cutting edge of today’s business. The IMBA programme places astrong emphasis on career development; for instance, participants willhave the opportunity to connect with <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Liverpool</strong> alumni inShanghai to enhance their professional business network. In addition,a final project enables participants to focus on a problem or issue directlyrelated to their interests and career goals. Please refer to page 12 tofind out how IBSS works closely with local business and industry.The IMBA programme is designed to give participants the skills andknowledge needed to progress to more senior management roles.To fully benefit from the advantages the programme offers, studentsare expected to have at least eight years professional experience,of which five years should be at the managerial level.MSc Entrepreneurship and InnovationThis programme will focus on those students and managers whowish to create their own business, those who work for and/or assistin developing a start-up company or how to apply entrepreneurialand innovative methods in existing organisations. It will also provideto the students a broad-based ability to plan, market and developentrepreneurship and innovation strategies for an organisation in asocially-responsible environment. An important component of theprogramme will be a comprehensive simulation which will covermany areas related to commencing a new venture.MSc Business Research MethodsThis 18-month programme offers students a solid researchbackground, preparing them for doctoral research and roles asbusiness analysts or consultants in companies. It combines coverage ofquantitative and qualitative research methodologies with subjectknowledge. This degree offers two options: the Management pathwayand the Economics & Finance pathway. It also offers exit points with thePostgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma in BusinessResearch Methods after twelve months of study. Entry is open toholders of a good undergraduate degree in a relevant subject.


10 International Business School Suzhouibss.xjtlu.edu.cn 11Faculty and ResearchIBSS has approximately sixty academic faculty memberswho bring an impressive range of international academicand business experience to their teaching and research.Doug Davies Chi-Yih Carol Yang Jiyao Xun Ron SchrammOur faculty members specialise in such areas as corporate socialresponsibility and sustainable development, international finance andeconomics, behavioral economics, marketing, human resourcesmanagement, organisational behaviour, international business andstrategic management, and more. As IBSS continues to grow, newfaculty positions will be filled. Given our focus on impact, our School hasrecruited faculty who balance an excellent academic background withpractical business experience, ensuring that students benefit not onlyfrom leading edge research by top ranking academics, but also frompeople with real-world business accomplishments.Doug Davies, a specialist in international negotiation and humanresources management, brings vast academic experience that iscomplemented by an equivalent background in business. Before joiningIBSS, he taught at the <strong>University</strong> of Canberra and at Curtin <strong>University</strong>in Australia; he has also been a visiting professor at Universiti SainsMalaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Hunan <strong>University</strong> and Yunnan Nationalities<strong>University</strong>, in addition to serving on the editorial board of severaljournals.Chi-Yih Carol Yang, Director of the MSc Finance programme, hasbridged her accounting and finance expertise between academia andindustry. Before joining IBSS, she had worked for Hewlett Packard andProcter & Gamble and then taught at the Universities in Taiwan. Sheholds a PhD in management as well as two accounting certificates,which are Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and CertifiedInternal Auditor (CIA). Her research interests include corporategovernance, performance evaluation and earnings management.Jiyao Xun, an expert in retail strategies in China and consumerbehaviour, teaches modules in Business Essentials, Market Researchand Psychological Approaches to Decision-Making. He was awardedhis PhD in Marketing from Nottingham <strong>University</strong>, UK, after completinghis Master of Science in Management Research from Saïd BusinessSchool at Oxford <strong>University</strong>.Ron Schramm, specialises in International Finance, the nexus betweenFinance and Economics, Emerging Markets Finance and the ChineseEconomy and Financial Institutions. He was on the faculty for over 25years at Columbia Business School in New York City w<strong>here</strong> he taughtthe widest range of courses of any professor t<strong>here</strong>. He was also aFulbright Scholar at the <strong>University</strong> of International Business andEconomics in Beijing, and served as a Visiting Professor at Hong Kong<strong>University</strong> of Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong <strong>University</strong>and Chinese European International Business School (CEIBS). He hasalso lectured frequently for IESE in their executive educationprogrammes. Ron was an Economist for three years at the InternationalMonetary Fund w<strong>here</strong> he did debt workouts for sub-Saharaneconomies. He was also Associate Director of Columbia’s Center forInternational Business Cycle Research. Ron is completing a textbookthis year: The Chinese Economy: Macroeconomics and Finance (A USPerspective) to be published by M.E. Sharpe.ResearchInternational Business School Suzhou aims to be a research-intensiveschool and continues to strengthen its research agenda. We areparticularly strong in the areas of international business, internationalfinance and economics, international human resource management,ethics and corporate social responsibility, organisational behaviour,Asia and Pacific economies, and international marketing.Faculty members attend top international conferences, have woninternational and Chinese external grants, and regularly publish inprestigious international peer-reviewed journals such as HumanRelations, Journal of Management Studies, Economic History Review,Journal of Futures Markets, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy,and Accounting and Business Research.Our researchers have close links with the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Liverpool</strong> in theUK and also pursue cross-disciplinary research collaborations withinXJTLU to bring different perspectives to questions facing businesses.For instance, a number of research projects have included facultymembers from the <strong>Department</strong> of Computer Science and the<strong>Department</strong> of Mathematical Sciences. In addition, our faculty memberswork to develop and sustain strong Chinese and international researchnetworks, enabling collaborations with colleagues at other institutionsaround the globe.Our ongoing regular Research Seminar Series is an integral partof the School’s research culture, providing an opportunity to discussideas in an academic environment. Faculty, visiting scholars andPhD students present their research and host discussions of theirideas. The seminars attract eminent speakers and professorsfrom around the world.PhD ProgrammeStudents in the PhD programme are registered with the <strong>University</strong>of <strong>Liverpool</strong> as off-site post-graduate research students. Thestudent’s primary supervisor will be a full-time faculty memberfrom IBSS, while a secondary supervisor will be based at the<strong>University</strong> of <strong>Liverpool</strong>.FacilitiesIBSS boasts excellent teaching facilities and study areas. All studentshave access to XJTLU’s extensive library resources and databases.IBSS is currently establishing a research laboratory that will supportstudies demanding intensive computational resources. The lab willalso enable IBSS to centralise and share research resources, maintainessential data and archive faculty and graduate student researchand seminar papers.XJTLU’s recently completed North Campus development features aninnovative new student-focused central building which houses astudent activities centre, conference centre, theatre and the XJTLULibrary. We canmarshal an impressive team of international faculty, many of whom haveworked in senior positions in business previously, to address the entirerange of management training needs.ConsultancyMost companies struggle to keep up with the constant need for newprojects and initiatives. Our faculty or students may be able to providethe additional resources or assistance organisations need to solve abusiness problem or develop a project.Support for EducationCompanies can support education in many ways: for example, byproviding a live case study for students to work on, arranging factoryvisits, or sending guest lecturers to discuss practical managementissues. Many student projects benefit the company as well – thecompany receives consultancy from keen young minds supervised byexperienced faculty, while students acquire a better understanding ofthe business world.InternshipsWe value high-quality internships which involve our students in realbusiness projects or allow them to experience day-to-day operationalmanagement. It is vital that our students have the opportunity to applytheir theory to real-life management practice.
