Math 133B: Partial Differential EquationsSpring 2013Instructor: Professor MaruskinOffice:310 MacQuarrie HallE–mail:maruskin@math.sjsu.eduOffice Hours: F 10:00–12:00Textbook: Asmar, Partial Differential Equations with Fourier Series andBoundary Value Problems, Second Edition, Pearson (2005).Website: http://www.math.sjsu/∼maruskin/M133B.htmLocation: Industrial Studies 215 09:00–10:15 MWMaterial Overview and Learning ObjectivesThis is an introductory course on partial differential equations. We will discuss Fourier seriesand solutions of basic pde’s from physics and engineering in rectangular, cylindrical, andspherical coordinates. We will also discuss Sturm–Liouville theory and Fourier transforms. The material corresponds to roughly chapters 1–7 of the text. Not every section will bediscussed; the exact sections will be tabulated on the course website for easy reference.Throughout the course, students are expected to:1. gain a proficient understanding of the concepts, apply concepts to abstract situations, and be able to make conclusions based on situational information;2. be able to perform basic computations;3. be able to apply concepts and computational abilities to solving real-world problems, i.e.,develop critical thinking and problem solving skills;4. be able to write numerical programs and implement various concepts in order to gaina better understanding and appreciation, or to solve more complex practical problems.PrerequisiteThe prerequisite for the course is Math 32 and Math 133A.Homework and Computer LabsStudents will be expected to complete a number of homework assignments. Each assignmentis be due at the start of class on its due date. Homework write-ups are expected to be formal, and will not only be graded on the correctness of the answers, but also on the student’s abilityto explain and present their solutions. These write-ups should be neat and professional, andwritten in a way so that someone else would be able to pick them up and learn from them. There may also be occasional computer assignments using MAPLE.Course GradeThe course grade will be determined based on homework, two midterms (cumulative), and afinal discussion.Homework 30%Midterm Exam I Wednesday, March 20 30%Midterm Exam II Monday, May 13 40%Final Discussion Tuesday, May 21 7:15–9:30 α ∈ [0, 1]overall score = α(0.3HW + 0.3EI + 0.4EII).

University PoliciesMinimum Workload ExpectationSuccess in this course is based on the expectation that students will spend, for each unitof credit, a minimum of forty-five hours over the length of the course (normally 3 hours perunit per week with 1 of the hours used for lecture) for instruction or preparation/studying orcourse related activities including but not limited to internships, labs, clinical practica. Othercourse structures will have equivalent workload expectations as described in the syllabus.Academic integrityYour commitment as a student to learning is evidenced by your enrollment at San JoseState University. The Universitys Academic Integrity policy, located athttp://www.sjsu.edu/senate/S07-2.htm,requires you to be honest in all your academic course work. Faculty members are required toreport all infractions to the office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development. The StudentConduct and Ethical Development website is available at http://www.sjsu.edu/studentconduct/.Instances of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Cheating on exams or plagiarism (presentingthe work of another as your own, or the use of another persons ideas without givingproper credit) will result in a failing grade and sanctions by the University. For this class, allassignments are to be completed by the individual student unless otherwise specified. If youwould like to include your assignment or any material you have submitted, or plan to submitfor another class, please note that SJSUs Academic Integrity Policy S07-2 requires approval ofinstructors.Campus Policy in Compliance with the American Disabilities ActIf you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, or if you need tomake special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please make an appointmentwith me as soon as possible, or see me during office hours. Presidential Directive 97-03 at http://www.sjsu.edu/president/docs/directives/PD 1997-03.pdf requires that studentswith disabilities requesting accommodations must register with the Disability Resource Center(DRC) at http://www.drc.sjsu.edu/ to establish a record of their disability.
