Formal sessions <strong>of</strong> IPC-2002 willtake place principally at Macquarie University.Palaeontologists throughout <strong>the</strong> world have suggested <strong>the</strong>mesfor symposia at <strong>the</strong> Congress; we hope we have included mosttopics <strong>of</strong> current interest. We have endeavoured to cover topicsthat will showcase our science as a vital one, contributing tosolving problems for biologists, geologists, isotope geochemistsand climatologists alike. If anyone feels <strong>the</strong>y have not beencatered for, please contribute to Symposium 21: Aspects <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rorganisms.Associated with <strong>the</strong> Congress will be two symposia: a Symposiumin honour <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>. Ge<strong>of</strong>frey Playford’s sustained contributionto micropalaeontology, especially palynology, and <strong>the</strong> JaneGray Memorial Symposium celebrating Jane’s lifetime commitmentto innovative research.subcommissions on stratigraphy, and IGCP projects with asignificant biochronologic focus. Please contact <strong>the</strong> OrganisingCommittee in order to book a time-slot.The Committee received excellent feedback from <strong>the</strong> FirstCircular; as a consequence, titles <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> symposia havebeen altered slightly and excursions modified. The excursions,as well as visiting regions noted for <strong>the</strong>ir outstandingpalaeontological interest, will provide opportunities to see some<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> unique landscapes <strong>of</strong> Australia. Despite problems withairlines, both international and domestic, <strong>the</strong> Committee isdetermined to push forward with <strong>the</strong> program as set out herein.Any changes will be communicated directly to individuals whomay be affected and as general announcements on Paleonet andon <strong>the</strong> Congress web page.Sydney is built around one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most scenic harbours in <strong>the</strong>world. Its comparatively mild winters, and high diversity <strong>of</strong>food, wine and c<strong>of</strong>fee houses <strong>of</strong>fers an ideal location to interactwith colleagues and make new friends. Technical aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Congress will be intercalated with a diverse spectrum <strong>of</strong> socialactivities including a day for local excursions to enable visitorsto sample <strong>the</strong> many attractions, scientific and cultural, <strong>of</strong>Sydney and its surroundings.
