CAREFIRST-CLASS CARE,WORLD-CLASS RESULTS“Living in a hospital for so long,the time goes by really slowly.”For 267 days, 15-year-old Vincent Lambert lived in a 20×15room at The Children’s waiting for the one thing thatcould save his life: a new heart. His old heart irreparablydamaged by a virus, he was forced to live for ten months inthe pediatric intensive care unit attached to a Berlin Heart.Cardiac cases like Vincent’s are complicated. For the first fewmonths, it was touch and go, but thanks to the outstandinglevel of care provided by the interdisciplinary team of doctors,nurses and other health professionals, Vincent’s hearttransplant was a resounding success.Dr. Christo Tchervenkov was part of the team caring for Vincent. He removed Vincent’s diseased heart. A world-renowned cardiacsurgeon, Dr. Tchervenkov is a pioneer in his field. The founding president of the World Society for Pediatric and Congenital HeartSurgery and Division Head of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at The Children’s, he holds the Tony Dobell Chair in Pediatric Surgery.“Donations from the community are crucial in making a success story like Vincent’s happen,” explains Dr. Tchervenkov. “I amforever grateful to donor groups like Andy Collins for Kids, Angela’s Big Hearts For Little Kids, the Heart of Life Fund, and theorganizers and participants of the Foundation’s Golf Tournament. They have made a direct impact on my work and ultimately onthe quality of care I can offer my patients.”During his lengthy stay, dozens of donors went out of their way to make Vincent’s life more comfortable. Catered meals, visitsfrom sports celebrities, and Wi-Fi installed by technicians from ESI Technologies in The Children’s Pediatric Intensive CareUnit were among some of the generous contributions from the community that greatly improved the boy’s quality of life.Thanks to them, and one very precious donation in particular, Vincent has a bright future to look forward to.DR. RESEARCH BRINGSNEW HOPEOne morning, 11-year-old Peterwoke up having suffered a partialseizure. After an emergency visitto The Children’s, the cause wasdetermined: a glioblastoma, one ofthe most common and aggressivemalignant brain tumours in humans.“We were in complete shock,” recalls the boy’s mother NancyBabalis. “There weren’t any apparent signs that anything waswrong.” Two days later, Peter underwent brain surgery to removeas much of the tumour as possible. Radiotherapy followed andone year later, he continues to undergo chemotherapy.As Peter leads the most courageous fight of his life, Dr. NadaJabado and her team of researchers at The Children’s leadan important battle of their own. Supported by visionarydonors like the Foundation of Stars and the Cole Foundation,the team has made a revolutionary breakthrough in theunderstanding of pediatric brain tumours. “It is clear nowthat glioblastoma in children is due to different molecularmechanisms than those in adults, and should not be treatedin the same way,” explains Dr. Jabado. “We now know whereto start focusing our efforts and treatments.”As both a clinician on the front lines as well as a researcher,Dr. Jabado sees the enormous challenges faced by families likePeter’s. “To accept what’s happening on the clinical side, youneed to dream. TRAININGTHE MEDICAL INNOVATORSOF TOMORROWWhen Dr. Jacob Pitaro was recruited to The Children’s fromIsrael to complete a clinical and research fellowship alongsideThe Children’s expert Otolaryngology team, he was exposedto a variety of complex and emergency cases that can only betreated at a centre like The Children’s. One such case was thatof baby Olie Charette.“Right after she was born, Olie started to turn blue,”remembers her mother Geneviève Charette. “She was rushedto the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at The Children’s.” AtThe Children’s, Dr. Pitaro assisted on the life-saving surgerythat would lead to Olie’s recovery. She was suffering from acondition called pyriform aperture stenosis, a rare conditionand cause of airway obstruction in newborns. One year later,Olie is a healthy and happy baby. “She is a miracle,” her mother says with pure joy in her voice. “Looking at her now, you wouldnever believe that she spent nearly a month in hospital fighting for her life.”Dr. Jacob Pitaro’s fellowship would have been impossible without donor funding. It is one of many examples of how donationsare critical to ensure The Children’s remains a hub of learning and medical innovation for future generations of specialists.“The opportunity I’ve had at The Children’s is really unique worldwide. It’s extremely rare to be able to gain integrated clinicaland research experience,” explains Dr. Pitaro. “It allowed me to see what challenges exist in practice while looking at how toolscan be improved to meet those challenges.”DR. Opération Enfant Soleil’s $25 million commitmentto The Best Care for Children Campaign makes it theHospital’s largest private partner.When the new Montreal Children’s Hospital opens its doorsto patients in 2015, Opération Enfant Soleil will have much tobe proud of! The non-profit’s commitment to the new Hospitalspans three major projects that will forever transform care atthe Hospital. The new Children’s Emergency Department, tobe named in honour of Opération Enfant Soleil, will featurean innovative expandable design, dramatically improvingstaff efficiency and affording greater privacy to patients andtheir families. The future medical imaging department, alsoto be named in honour of Opération Enfant Soleil, will boastthe best diagnostic tools at the service of all ambulatory andhospitalized patients.In 2009, Opération Enfant Soleil played a leading role inhelping The Children’s obtain its Intra-Operative MRI suite,a first in a Canadian pediatric hospital. This revolutionarysurgical suite allows MRI images to be taken in mid-surgery,reducing the need for patients to undergo multiple brainoperations. When this equipment moves to the new Children’sin 2015 it will continue to have life-changing effects for patients.OPÉRATION ENFANT SOLEIL: 25 YEARSOF HELPING QUEBEC’S YOUNGESTFounded in 1988, Opération EnfantSoleil is a non-profit organization whosemission is to raise funds in support ofstate-of-the-art pediatric care and socialhealth projects for children all overQuebec. $20.24 MILLIONRAISED FROM2011-2012A banner year, thanks to you! The 2011-2012 year was arecord one for the Foundation. Revenue from donations exceeded$20.2 million, representing an increase of 5% over last year. Thanksto the overwhelming generosity of our donors, we are seeing revenuegrowth from all sources, from major foundations, to corporations, andcommitted members of the community. I would also like to highlightthe work of our countless volunteers and the team of employees at theFoundation, who go above and beyond for our cause.Unfortunately, we can’t say the same of the economy and financialmarkets. This year we recorded an unrealized loss on our investmentsof $1.6 million. Thankfully, our realized investment revenuesexperienced a $1 million increase this year, resulting in $2.2 millionof net investment income compared to $1.2 million in 2010-2011.This year, the Foundation contributed a total of $12.3 million to diverseprojects at the Hospital, including the purchase of medical equipment,renovation projects, teaching and various research programs – not tomention the Hospital’s most urgent needs. Of our total contribution,$2.3 million will go towards the construction of the Research Instituteof the new Children’s on the Glen site. In addition, $3 million wasendowed for the creation of the Tony Dobell Chair in Pediatric Surgery.The coming years will bring their share of challenges to allow theMontreal Children’s Hospital to continue to distinguish itself by theoutstanding care it gives our children.
