Volume 3, Issue 6Friday, June 8, 2012THE GRIZZLY GAZETTESenior EditionRANKIN’S FINAL ROARAfter overseeing nearly 65,000 studentsand working for 39 years in the educationalfield, Principal Greg Rankin has decided to retirefrom Santa Ana Unified School District andGodinez Fundamental High School.Rankin held multiple administrativepositions in the district. He began like most, teaching students at Carr Intermediate and after7 years he became assistant principal at 2 differentschools, John Muir and Monte Vista Elementary.Shortly after, he became principal andestablished his career which would last 29 yearsand would leave his print at five different SantaAna schools: Willard, Lathrop, Villa, Centuryand Godinez.Having accomplished so many things itwas a surprise to many when he announced hisretirement. When interviewed Rankin stated, “I hadtalked a lot about it for a while with my family andit wasn’t a surprise to them.”Working for 39 years, Rankin has gainedmore than experience and has learned plenty fromeach of the 5 schools where he has been principal.BY DANIEL BERNALNow he’ll have time to read the paper. (Photo courtesy ofDanielle Flores)“Opening 2 new schools both Godinez and Villa hasbeen one of the major highlights in my career becausemost people don’t get the chance to do that.”“I enjoy knowing that students have succeededand that we have helped students get theeducation they need and receive plenty of opportunities.”When asked what he liked about Godinez,Rankin mentioned “I have enjoyed all theschools where I have worked at, but Godinezis an outstanding school. The staff works togetherlike a team which helps the school feelwelcoming and strong. I enjoy how dedicatedthe students are and how they always achievethe expectations.”Girls’ athletic director Lisa Treenstates, “I am especially grateful for his supportwith athletics.” While English departmenthead Chris Lammers said she is “betterfor having known him and he encouraged usto go beyond our wildest dreams of educationin Santa Ana.”Staying active, improving his golfgame and traveling will replace his routineof dealing with meetings, parent conferences andmonitoring overcrowded lunch lines.Godinez is proud to have had suchan amazing individual open this school and haveit be recognized by many. There will always be aplace here for him and his legacy will live on.With over 20 seniors receivingmore than an estimate of $50,000in scholarships a year for four yearsgeneralizing to an amount of $4million dollars, almost double of themoney given to the Class of ‘11, thereis no wonder why more than roughly6 percent of students will be flyingout of state to attend college.“I’m really sad I have to lethigh school go, but I’m also excitedto start college,” said senior KarenPatricio, attending Cornell Universityin the fall, “...high school is just astepping stone to where I really wantto go”Patricio, is one of many Godinezseniors receiving more money inscholarship funds to attend an out-ofstatecollege instead of in-state. Asmagical as it may sound you don’tneed to be Harry Potter or have anawesome wand for this trick, but it doesinvolve hitting the books (not literally, but metaphorically.Seriously don’t hit your books...theycost money!), a dash of motivation and a big heapingbowl of passion. As the scholarship website Zinch.comwould say, “I am more than a test score!” and studentsschoolwide who might not have even heardof the common quote have definitely proven so.“One of the major reasons my university selectedme was because of my volunteer work for TheWalk for Autism,” said senior Jasmin Nunez attendingUniversity of Rochester.INSIDE THIS ISSUEScholarshipsBY JAMILAH HOSANROP Scholarship recipients (Photo courtesy of Chester Maharaj)“I’m in NHS, CSF and Key Club, but I’velearned that it’s not just grades, it’s also about helpingyour community.” Patricio added, “I think onceI started high school I wanted to do it for me. Itwasn’t about impressing my parents anymore.”In fact, not only are these students andmore to follow impressing their parents, some andin fact most, happen to be the first to mark historyin their family by being the first to attend college, let alone a top notch university.Giovanny Santos, a first generation collegestudent in his family will be attending DenisonCollege in Ohio this upcoming fall. “I’m an artist,I’m hoping to pursue that in college.I was planning to be in engineeringas well but that could change.” exclaimedSantos, “I feel really...well,I didn’t think I was going to get thismuch in scholarships, so yeah, I’mexcited”.Not only are these soon to be gradsreceiving huge cash, but sevenLady Grizzlies were each given ascholarship worth $1,000 each anda new Apple ipad 2 on May 9, 2012,from the Women’s League of SantaAna.In addition, seven more Grizzliesboth male and female received$1,000 from the prestigious HispanicEducation Endowment Fund(HEEF) and 56 scholarships wereawarded to seniors who will beattending Santa Ana College thisfall compared to five scholarshipsawarded the previous year. Whoah! When do these Grizzlies stop?Grizzlies whether: nerdy, athletic, artsy, and all the above have not been ignored, but onlyembraced. What ever the passion may be counselors, staff, family, and friends are here to help! Literally,it’s kind of their job.Take advantage of theopportunities, log off Facebook for a bit and startmaking yourself look good. Not with make-up ornice hair, but with a little less procrastinating anda little more concentrating. EDITORIAL: The Final Growl of a Graduating GrizzlyEverybody has their own story. Everyonehad their own reasons for choosing Godinezas their high school. Everyone had theirchoices, their justifications, their dreams, their goals, their own image of who theywanted to become when they chose to gohere. Each and every story has its ownunique path, but in the end it has united us inthe same school we have come to know andlove.Under my circumstances, many would callme a fool for choosing to attend Godinez, considering I live in Moreno Valley, a citythat is an hour and 30 minutes away fromSanta Ana. But there is a definite method to my madness. In Moreno Valley, most highschools are under performing. In addition, I couldn’t deal with the pain of leaving behindmy hometown, the city I have grown up in since the day I was born. However, there were more complications than the commute from Santa Ana toMoreno Valley. None of my friends chose to attend Godinez. I had the option to chooseGodinez or another rival fundamental school that shall not be named. Despite the obviouschoice to stick with my friends, I chose Godinez. I needed to challenge myself.I wanted to grow up and become my own independent self. Much like I had hoped,Godinez gave me that chance to grow and prosper.I’ll have to admit, I was really nervous the first day of school. Sadly, I was aloner those first few weeks. I had no friends. It wasn’t until I met Alejandra Magaña, asenior this year, who introduced me to her friends. Little did I know she would becomeone of my greatest and most supportive friends. But I guess that’s what high school is all about. You discover who your truefriends are. Your best friend could become your mortal enemy. They can become yourrival or maybe outgrow you as they become part of the different cliques of high school. The people you never really noticed can become the greatest influence in your life. After 4 years of dedicatedwork and testing, DanielleHerron and Jesus Gonzalez haverecently been honored with theprestigious title of Valedictorianand Salutatorian.Danielle, who has takencountless AP classes along withvolleyball and extracurricularclasses, became motivated by hergrandparents, who said they arevery proud of their granddaughterand are happy she is living upto her family’s name, while alsoachieving the title of first Valedictorianin the Herron family.Though the glory ishers, Danielle has had to makecountless sacrifices along theway to become ranked number one. She has had to cutdown on her social life during certain circumstances onthe weekends, and studied extensively numerous eachnight, achieving a 4.6 GPA.Along with a rigorous schedule, Danielle hasalso focused her attention to Volleyball. A sport, whichshe has unconditional love for.Danielle will soon be bound to the Universityof California, Irvine. She will make Godinez proud atUC Irvine, while majoring in Biology.Jesus Gonzalez, our salutatorian focused onEDITORIALSBY ANTHONY RAMIREZThe 1 and 2 of 2012BY STEVEN CORTEZVolume 3, Issue 6Maybe you’re one of the lucky few who were able to keep your best friend along theway, like my best friend Karen Patricio.Of course there will always be the drama of high school. “So-and-so kissed myboyfriend.” “Why do you talk to him more than me?” “Why do you have to lag it onme so much?” After a while you learn to grow past that. Maturity is a mysterious andmiraculous change. Looking back, I can judge many of my past thoughts and actions aschildish. What might’ve been a big deal back then, is nothing but child’s play now. When I first entered this school, I was a shy introvert who really had nofriends, and put a lot of time and dedication into studies and academics. Now that I facethe final moments of high school, I have become an active, clear-spoken individual whodoesn’t hold back. I do what I want and accept the consequences for my actions, like anadult.Don’t let my looks deceive you though; it still breaks my heart to know thatI will be leaving all my friends behind, all the memories and laughs I shared with myfriends and hearing our cries echoing throughout the halls. I’ll never forget the autumnleaves at the beginning of the school year, the cold winds and cloudy days of winter, thesticky days of spring, and the burning days of summer. I’ll still have this when I attendChapman in August, but I’ll always miss the halls, the gym, the theater, the classrooms, the fields, everything. Remembering each year is like rereading chapters of a book, abook about my life. You always hear people say, “high school flies right before your eyes.” Iknow it seems a bit cheesy, and so you choose to not believe them. Take it from me, afellow Grizzly who will be graduating this upcoming June: it does fly by fast. I’m notsaying you need to know everything about what you’re going to do for the rest of theyears you have left at Godinez, but try to enjoy every moment of it. Learn from themistakes you make. Dump the people who bring you down, and keep the ones whomake you shine. Show those out there that kids from Santa Ana do have dreams, thatthey do represent something in life. Don’t be discouraged. Never give up. After enduringthe ups and downs of high school, this Grizzly feels proud to say I have enjoyedhigh school to the fullest, and I would never change anything about it. So enjoy life myfriends, and let the world hear your roar.his AP classes, managing tomake both academics and extracurricularalike his priority, including NHS.How did he do it? How didhe balance his schoolwork? He became conscious of everygrade in every class, thoughit was a rigorous act. Timemanagement was the biggestobstacle in his path.He has become his ownmotivation and believes thatsince it’s your own life youhave to work hard for whatyou want in life and no oneSalutatorian, Jesus Gonzalez and Valedictorian, Danielle else can do anything for you.Herron (Photo courtesy of Monica Molina) Jesus is able to separateleisure from work. Managingto keep a steady balance in his life. Though at timeshe struggled with academic prowess and family life,he managed to come up on top with an overall GPA of4.58.Jesus plans to board a plane and head to WashingtonD.C to attend Georgetown University in the fall.Attending as undecided, but he’ll soon find his truecalling. We are excited for speeches from the Valedictorian& Salutatorian on June 13th at Graduation.SUMMER FUNBelly tops, flip flops, lemonade in theshade, blue skies, late night water fights, icecream, sweet dreams, bathing suits, shootinghoops, party time, school is out, and sleeping inis what is about to happen this Summer 2012!Summer 2011 was fun, but summer 2012 iswhere journeys will begin. This summer we should all grab a friendand go explore local theme parks, the beach, and fairs.
