9In 1960, U.E.C.L. was granted corporate status by KingBaudouin <strong>of</strong> Belgium.In the years that followed, the registered <strong>of</strong>fice movedto Parochianenstraat 11 <strong>and</strong> later to Violetstraat 43 inBrussels, where it is located to this very day.A few years later, English was added as the third <strong>of</strong>ficiallanguage.In 1991, U.E.C.L. changed its name to UEPC (<strong>Union</strong>européenne des promoteurs-constructeurs/<strong>European</strong><strong>Union</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Developers</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>House</strong> <strong>Builders</strong>/Europäische<strong>Union</strong> der freien Wohnungsunternehmen) to reflect thefact that the members <strong>of</strong> UEPC had grown to include adiverse range <strong>of</strong> real estate developers <strong>of</strong> both residential<strong>and</strong> non-residential properties.In 2007 the legal status <strong>of</strong> UEPC was changed to that <strong>of</strong>an international non-pr<strong>of</strong>it association (INPA) to complywith current Belgian law.The purpose <strong>of</strong> UEPC was to unite <strong>European</strong>developers in order to exchange experience, knowledge,<strong>and</strong> research, <strong>and</strong> to organise colloquia <strong>and</strong> cooperationbetween individual members in participating states.Today, through its national members, UEPC representsmore than 30,000 developers <strong>and</strong> businesses working inthe property development <strong>and</strong> construction industries.Their activities affect more than 10% <strong>of</strong> the gross nationalproduct <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> total employment in Europe.Together they build <strong>and</strong> develop approximately1,000,000 new homes <strong>and</strong> several million square metres<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>and</strong> retail space each year.UEPC is the umbrella organisation for the variousnational federations <strong>of</strong> real estate developers <strong>and</strong> housebuilders. The association is both recognised <strong>and</strong> wellrespected by the <strong>European</strong> authorities.UEPC does more than simply respond to EU initiatives.It is also a proactive organisation that identifies new<strong>and</strong> emerging issues <strong>and</strong> addresses them in a strategicmanner. In addition, the national federations also call onUEPC’s services <strong>and</strong> contacts to defend their interests atthe <strong>European</strong> level.
