September 2006dpncanada.comDesign Product News 5RenderingsGood luck always seems to come tothose who are properly prepared!By Mike Edwards, EditorFlying back from Chicago after arecent software briefing, I found myseat companion represented anOntario-based manufacturer of costumejewelry. Remarkably, I discovered, his companystill did all its design work with penciland paper, using – GASP – no CAD softwarewhatsoever!Naturally, most of you probably do notstill produce your designs on drafting tables, but use some sort of 2D drawing software, with the occasional desktop computer fittedout with sort of 3D mechanical CAD program.Fortunately, Raymond Kurland ofClifton, NJ-based TechniCom, Inc. (technicom.com)has authored Selecting aSelecting aCAD system tendsto be done at toolow a levelMechanical CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM Systemfor Small and Medium Businesses. (The 12-page white paper is available atptc.com/go/buyersguide.)In his introduction, Kurland states whatmany of us have felt, all to painfully:“Selecting a CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM(CCCP) system for small businesses is noeasy task.“Without the resources brought to bearby large companies, in many cases selectinga system tends to be done at too low alevel, with poor consideration of companystrategic issues, with little understandingof the product development environmentand any proposed improvement, and withlittle idea of expected ROI or metrics.”The steps in buying a new productdevelopment system are clearly and logicallylaid out in the white paper:in more detail. Now ask yourself some tough, self-examinationquestions to see if you need tochange or improve:• When did you last update your systemfor product development?• Are your engineers/designers primarilydesigning using 3D?• Are you happy with your product quality?• Are you happy with your product developmenttimes and the time it takes to bringproducts to market?• Do you respond to a high percentage ofRFPs in a timely fashion?• Are your development and go-to-marketThe choice is clear......the one with the Edge.costs in line with your competitors?• Are you able to interact with global suppliersin the design phase as well as youshould be?• If need be, can you exchange design datawith your customers and/or suppliers? Inthis exchange, can you retain security onyour key product data?• Are your engineering and manufacturingbills of material kept synchronized?• Can you effectively access and use portionsof prior designs in new products orprojects? If you answered “No” to any of thesequestions you are operating with a deficientCCCP system, Kurland states. As for my seat companion on thatrecent flight, at least I was able to recommendationa jewelry-specific CAD program. And maybe one day I’ll get a free,software-designed belt buckle in the mail(silver, please, it goes with my wardrobe). If you found Renderings interesting, please fill inInfo Card 344 or send a message anytime tomedwards@clbmedia.ca.Step 1Begin the process of deciding whether toimprove your existing mechanical CCCPsystem or to change to a new system byanswering a few simple questions (below).Step 2Identify the potential benefits of a new system.Look for improvement by understandingwhat company performanceshould be improved.Step 3Decide on the requirements of a new systemand translate desired improvements tosystem requirements.Step 4Decide what a new system should includeand what it should cost.Recent tests prove it...vs. SolidWorks...and our customers confirm it."SolidWorks had too many pop-up menus and you were alwayshaving to confirm and constrain everything you wanted to do.Solid Edge required 30 percent fewer keystrokes so you couldwork much faster. The software wasn't always interruptingyour flow."Per Carlson, MJC Engineering & Technology Inc"I evaluated eight systems, including Inventor and SolidWorksand determined that Solid Edge by far has the best 2D to 3DAutoCAD compatibility out there. I found that Solid Edgemet or exceeded our requirements in almostevery aspect."Michael Valcarcel, Lochinvar Corp.Step 5Select a CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM system(making sure the best system is selected).Step 6Implementing the system (plan for success)Sign up now forour Solid Edge seminars.Call 1-888-567-3933 or visit www.designfusion.caSolid Edge is a registered trademark of UGS Corp. 14 Design Product News dpncanada.comSeptember 2006Feature:Motion ControlDirect drive motors eliminate thetransmission between motor and loadBy Jeff ArnoldDirect-drive motors eliminate thetransmission between motor andload. Withdirect-drive motors, there are no shafts, couplings, gearboxesor belt/pulley sets. There are twotypes of direct-drivemotors: linear androtary. Direct-drivelinear (DDL) motors are used when thework piece moves on a straight line.Magnets are laid side-by-side in a magnet-WAGO_DPN_Sept2006 1Rotary andlinear systemsreduce machinecomplianceic way to span the length of travel. Thecoils are also laid side-by-side. The coilassembly, sometimes called the platen ortable, slides along the magnet way with aclearance of 0.015 to 0.030 in. While theshapes are different, theprinciples of linearmotors are similar tothose of rotary motors. The electromagneticinteraction, feedbackdevices, and servo drivesfor linear motors arelargely derived fromrotary motors.Direct-drive rotary (DDR) motors areused when the final motion is rotational,Info Card #168/15/06 12:37:28 PMDirect-drivelinear (DDL)motors are usedwhen the workpiece moves on astraight line.typically on drive tables. Compared toa traditional servomotor, DDRmotors have no transmissioncomponents to providemechanical advantage. They must providemore torque, albeit at lowerspeeds.Thisrequiresmore magneticstructure with a highernumber of poles andcoils, which makes the motor larger indiameter. DDR motors are sometimes soldas complete motors and sometimes as separatecomponents (called “kit” or “frameless”form), which are integrated into themachine by the machine builder. In mostcases, DDR motors have a large-bore holein the rotor to pass plumbing and wiring.Direct drive is normally the best meansto reduce machine compliance. The transmissioncan be removed and with it, all thetraditional sources of compliance are eliminated. However, direct-drive systems arenot immune to problems of insufficientstiffness. The most common problem iswhen the load is overhung in a direct-drivelinear motor. Here, the compliant “spring”is the preload of the linear bearings. Theload is off-centre so that force from the linearmotor imparts an undesirable rotationaltorque in addition to the desired translationalforce. The load rotates some andthe linear bearing produces a force to holdthe load in-line. That force comes from thebearing races, which act like springs. Thissource of compliance commonly causesresonance in linear systems. When designingdirect-drive systems, bear in mind thatthe bearing races can form a compliantcoupling to any off-centre load. Eliminateor minimize off-center loads to allow maximumperformance.Sometimes direct-drive motors areused to drive compliant transmissioncomponents. This often occurs when thedirect-drive motor is installed into amachine or device designed for traditional(geared or belted) motors. For example,a machine or device might have beendesigned for a traditional motor with agearbox driving a long shaft. If a directdrivemotor were used to replace themotor and gearbox, the compliance fromthe shaft would remain. Compliancefrom remaining transmission componentscan cause problems in direct-drive systemsjust as they do with traditionalmotors; stiffening those components willprovide similar benefits. In many cases, direct-drive linearmotors can be used by changing out a linearstage. In other cases, a machine willrequire significant mechanical modificationsto use a direct drive motor.Benefits include reducing zero-speedposition error and vibration due to theelimination of transmission components,as well as simplifying machine design byremoving transmission components.Pitfalls include greater sensitivity tovarying load inertia because the load inertiais not reduced by a gear ratio, as well asincreased cost.Jeff Arnold is Direct Drive TechnologySpecialist at Danaher Motion (danahermotion.com).Circle DPN 325

18 Design Product News dpncanada.comSeptember 2006Feature:Motion ControlLooking for better accuracy and smoother motion?Maximize your torque at the desired speedBy Mindy LinStep motors have a natural tendency towant to move towards their full stepON position. This magnetic pull is called the detenttorque of the motor, which causes a jerkingmotion as the motor nears these positions. In a bipolar stepper motor, onephase will have 100% current and theother phase will have 0% current (this iswhat we’ll call the zerocrossing point).Transparentview of the SilverPak 23DIntegrated Step Motor + Driverfrom Lin Engineering.Phases A and B are 90º offset and bothhave a sinusoidal current waveforms.Engineers in the motion control industryhave gone through the trial and errorprocess, tweaking the current sine waves inorder to alleviate the “jerk” that the motormakes as it is forcefully pulled towards thezero crossing spots. However, these zerocrossing spots are sensitive to the minimalamount of change so altering the waveformcan greatly affect other areas of thedriver’s performance.Using Pole Damping Technology fromLin Engineering, the R325 Driver andSilverPak 23D Integrated Step Motor +Driver output the right amount ofboth holding and running currentinto the motor to overcome themotor’s detent torque. And, while they continue to servicethe watch industry, an increasing portionof their business is in non-traditionalareas, with products such as miniaturerotary and linear ball bearings, ball screws,micro-motors and sophisticated, smallscalemechanisms built around these components. One example is a high-precision drugdispensingpump, so small and reliable thatit can be surgically implanted into thepatient’s body. MPS has also built high-precisionminiaturized assemblies for use indemanding aerospace, telecommunications, medical and optical applications. While these new applications are often cuttingedge, the importance of tradition isclear. As Nicola Thibaudeau, the Quebecborn and educated CEO of MPS explained,“Our unique know-how in assemblingmicro-mechanical components is the fruitof the pure Swiss watch making tradition.”Another company that takes advantageof Switzerland’s strong traditions of precisionand miniaturization is AdvancedMicro Technology AG (am-tech.ch). AMTis a comparative newcomer, set up by theGerman automation giant Festo. In 2002, Festo identified miniaturizationof components and equipment as animportant trend in the automation industry. This trend is driven by the need for“microassembly” of smaller and morecomplex products for the industrial andconsumer markets. Festo also recognizedthat as automation equipment becomessmaller and more complex, it becomesincreasingly important to reduce the numberof separate components by integratingmultiple functions into each part. (Forexample, a hydraulic actuator could incorporatea hydraulic cylinder, control valvesand position sensors in a single unit.)With these requirements in mind, Festodecided to set up a special development centre, dedicated to creating a new generationof miniaturized, multi-function products. And, since the emphasis was on quality, precisionand miniaturization, it was perhapsnatural that they decided to locate this centrein the traditional watch-making regionof western Switzerland. Today, AMT specializesin the development of pressure sensors, flow sensors and proportional valvesfor miniaturized automation devices such as‘intelligent’ grippers for production robots. On a larger scale, Trumpf (trumpf.com)builds laser cutting and laser markingequipment in eastern Switzerland. HereTrumpf produces equipment that rangesfrom large machining system machineswith CO2 lasers as powerful as 15 kW,down to marking systems that use smallsolid-state lasers to etch names, logos, serialnumbers and other marks onto the surfacesof metal, plastic or ceramic objects.James Tulk is a freelance writer living inToronto (jtulk@pr-toolbox.com).Circle DPN 324

24 Design Product News dpncanada.comSeptember 2006Automotive SceneEthanol – Fuel of the Future?By Bill VanceWith crude oil around $75 perbarrel, possibility headed for$100, and gasoline at over$1.00 per litre, growingour own motor fuel takeson renewed urgency. Thefact that it’s greener andcleaner is a bonus. NotGeneral Motors claims that a flex-fuel Chevrolet Impala (above) using cellulose E85 emits 40% less greenhouse gas than a small hybrid car. GM,Ford and others are actively promoting ethanol, in part because it makes meeting tightening emission standards easier.surprisingly, theGovernment of Canadais poised to implement a national programrequiring 5% biofuel by 2010, so we’ll beCold weathercan causeharder startspumping ethanol (wood ethanol) into ourfuel tanks before long. With some adjustmentsthe transition can be accommodatedby the existing gasoline distributioninfrastructure. For gasoline engines this will be a mixtureof ethanol andgasoline ranging fromE10 (10% ethanol and90% gasoline) to E85(85% ethanol). Ethanolas motor fuel is notnew, having been usedin North America on a limited basis formany years, and sugar cane- based ethanolnow powers 70% of Brazilian vehicles. What is new will be its mandated use here.Extending gasoline with ethanol isbeing driven by several factors, includingthe rising cost of crude oil, the instability ofsome oil producing countries, the desire todecrease or eliminate imported oil, the goalof arresting global warming by reducingemissions, and government mandates. Anunderlying theme is that it would subsidizeand/or support the agriculture industry, and given the rural vote distribution bias, the government has a vested interest.Canada, of course, has extensive oilsands reserves, but processing it takes hugeamounts of natural gas and water, makingit an expensive form of oil. If more conventionaloil prices fell significantly oilsands oil may not be economically viable.Corn kernels are the typical source ofethanol in North America, but corn is anexpensive crop and may not be cost effective.Researchers at Cornell University inIthaca, New York, and BerkeleyUniversity in California have concludedthat producing corn ethanol is cost negative,i.e., it takes more fossil fuel energy tofarm, transport and process a litre ofethanol than the ethanol contains.Others, including the United StatesDepartment of Energy’s Argonne NationalLaboratory in Illinois, have just as persuasivelyargued that ethanol has a positiveenergy balance; Argonne says it contains67% more energy than it consumes.Iogen Corp, an Ottawa-based biotechcompany feels the better approach toethanol is from non-food cellulose materialssuch as cereal straw or corn stover.Ethanol is a cleaner fuel than gasoline;Berkeley estimates it produces 13 % lessgreenhouse gas per BTU, although the U.S.Department of Energy puts the figure atonly 4% for E85.A slight downside to ethanol is that itcan cause harder starting in cold weather. And ethanol has about 30% less energy inBTUs than gasoline, meaning more litresper 100 km, converting to a 25% shorterdriving range on a tank of E85.If you found Automotive Scene interesting, please fill in 343 on the Info Card. 26 Design Product News dpncanada.comSeptember 2006Feature:Hydraulics & PneumaticsNon-spill coupling fits bill for HP bulk ink deliveryHewlett-Packard (HP) brings innovationto package printingthrough its Specialty PrintingSystems division (SPS). SPS focuses onhelping companies integrate HP’s thermalinkjet (TIJ) technology and products intotheir printing systems. When SPS was developing its VersatileBlack Bulk Ink System, a robust and flexiblebulk ink delivery system for high-volumeprint runs used inindustrial packagingapplications, it turned toColder ProductsCompany (CPC) for itsquick disconnect connection. After investigating anumber of off-the-shelffluid connectors from different sources, theHP engineering team selected CPC’s NS4Series Non-Spill Coupling. The componentprovided the reliable, easy-to-use,low-cost connection the team needed. “Wesuggested using a coupler with a non-spillshut-off valve,” said Andy Hass, IndustrialBusiness Unit Manager, CPC. “This augmentedthe product design by helping toavoid messy ink spillage when the coupleris disconnected.”The Versatile Black Bulk Ink System isdesigned for companies that execute largeprint runs and have a need for a high-vol-Secureconnectionsavoids messyink spillsThe HP Black Bulk Ink System consists of the modular ink supplystation holding the ink cartridges, the enclosed regulator assemblyand the print head stalls. Briley, Engineering Manager, HPSpecialty Printing Systems.HP’s Versatile Black Bulk Ink System isa robust, advanced bulk ink delivery systemthat offers superior print quality, lowcost per copy, and minimal user intervention. The system offersdesign engineers theopportunity to configurealmost any combinationof HP Q2320A printheadsand HP Q2321Abulk ink supplies toachieve the desired printcapability. The HPQ2320A printhead also produces highquality,water-fast, and crisp output with a600 dpi resolution from 300 nozzles. Thesystem uses black pigmented aqueous inkin large volume ink supplies (350 cc) thatcan print on a wide range of substrates, including kraft, corrugated, and clay coated. The industrial bulk ink delivery systemis widely used for mail addressing, mailpostage, carton coding, barcode printers, and many industrial applications thatrequire long production runs, low cost perimprint, and reliable, user friendly printingsystems. The mechanical connections betweenthe regulator assemblyand the printheadsare essentialparts of the ink deliverysystem. Connectionsthat are notsecure or spill-proofcan lead to messy inkspills when disconnectedand requireincreased operatorinvolvement. Theresult can be costlyjob downtime. TheSPS design teamapproached CPC todevelop customizedcouplings for the newsystem that wouldminimize connectionconcerns andimprove the serviceabilityof the printheads and ink supplysystem“The CPC experts worked very closelywith our engineers to create a customproduct that met our needs and strengthenedour entire system,” said Briley. “Thisstrong partnership has enabled us to meetour cost, performance, and schedule targets, and offer a superior solution by virtuallyeliminating the potential for spills”The HP Bulk Ink Delivery System allowsfor a bulk ink supply to be connected toone or several print cartridges. A fluid regulatorsystem enables the ink supply to belocated in virtually any locationconvenient for theprinting system, and stillmaintain reliable andcontrolled inkdelivery to theprint cartridges. The modular inksupply station islinked throughflexible tubing tothe enclosed regulatorassembly, which maintains pressure andink flow. Flexible tubes again connect theColder Products Company’s NS4 Series Non-Spill Coupling Series features anon-spill shut-off valve that enhances operator safety and speeds connectiontime. The NS4 features a non-spillshut-off valve that is ideal for use in inkhandling applications. In addition to minimizingspills, the valve also automaticallyreduces air inclusion or trapped air thatmay lead to print quality problems andexpensive system delays and maintenance.“One feature that makes our couplingsunique is an easy-to-use thumb latch toallow for secure, single-handed operation,”said Hass. “An audible “click” confirmsthat a secure connection is made andassures a secure seal.” The intuitive designof the NS4 makes it so simple that no toolsare required to connect or disconnect thetubing and special training is not necessaryfor regular operation of the thermal inkjetsystem. This article was supplied by ColderProducts Company (colder.com) of St.Paul, MN.Info Card 321Ensure Safety While Increasing Productivitywith Sitema Safety CatchersPick A Number Between 6 and 50Press Safetywww.ame.com 800-225-4263• Safety Catchers are used wherepersonal protection and accidentprevention must be provided — suchas when hydraulic or pneumaticpressure system fails, or if a rope, chain, belt, or toothed drive breaks.• The SITEMA Safety Catcher willprevent the load from fallinganywhere along the stroke.• Functions directly on the cylinderrod or on a separate holding shaftChances are there’s aNovotechnik hollow-shaft rotarysensor for your applicationWith standard bore sizes of 6, 10, 20,30, 40, and 50 mm and other sizes on request, the GL series of hollow-shaft rotaryposition sensors provide accurate measurement with standard electrical functionangles up to 354º for automation, medical, laboratory, automotive steering and otherrotary applications. September 2006dpncanada.comDesign Product News 27Pneumatic valve terminals engagein digital dialog and diagnosticsSporadic faults can be detected by either laborious local analyses or by reading out the CPX diagnostics trace.Valve terminals are among the mostimportant industrial communicationand installation systems. Theylink the worlds of pneumatics and electronicsfor machine-level diagnostics. For example, Festo’s CPX conceptalready includes basic diagnostics functions, which can be used without the needfor further investment.Machines can be monitoredfrom a central point, with configuration andfast diagnostics via existingnetworks and an integratedEthernet interfaceas a meeting point for thetwo worlds of automationand information technology.Diagnostics is the key to better productivity.CPX/MPA opens the door to:• Modular diagnostics services, includingDiagnosticsis the key tobetterproductivitycustom-configured CPX/MPA-modulesthat can be selected with or without highleveldiagnostics, and, within the modules, only those diagnostics features that areactually required in the installation areactivated. The data provides an immediateindication of the causes of faults and measuresrequired.• Module- or channelorienteddiagnostic I/Os• Valve diagnostics perchannel• Local open text• Additional Ethernetinterface• Remote maintenance,e-mail or SMS alarmThere is a world of difference betweenthe time it takes to produce an installationand the length of time for which this willbe in operation. While machine construc-tors would allow roughly three months forsystem design and installation, the plannedoperating life of an installation with theend user could be eight to ten years –including maintenance, modernizationand a great deal of downtime. But when itcomes to diagnostic functions, developersare wary of the costs of these, which mayamount to 30% of total programmingcosts.Peripheral devices such as CPX/MPAcan help reduce downtime with tailormadeintegrated diagnostic services. In thisway, integrateddiagnostic functionscan be providedat relativelow cost in termsof time. Thus, ifavailability canbe improvedfrom 90 to 92%,this means a savingof no lessthan $2.86 millioneach year onthe basis of aproduction volumeof $143 million– demonstratingthat thetotal cost ofownership is well worthwhile!Until now, remote maintenance conceptshave simply been concerned withgathering data from machines and transmittingthis to a central point. Here, it hasoften been unused and without a purposein “data graveyards.”Interpretation and evaluation of data ofthis kind is, however, vital for preventivemaintenance. Previously, it was possible tomonitor only on-line controller functions, with no possibility of looking intomachines until an actual fault occurred. Many users find the task of makingthis increasingly complex diagnosticsdata quite daunting.Certainly direct diagnosis reduces costs. The atmosphere in the case of installationbreakdown, resulting in downtime, is hectic. For example, if a technician knows viaan SMS that a short circuit is present inmodule 5, channel 2, he or she can localizethe defective component with just a fewmouse clicks, pack the right spare part andquickly set about remedying the fault inquestion. This may sound futuristic but is alreadyreality with modern valve terminals suchas the CPX/MPA.Faults that are present now are obviousto everyone: The relevant LED lights up, thecorresponding bit is set. CPX/MPA offersseveral channel-oriented LEDs on each I/Omodule, while on valves there are even twocolorLEDs for status/ fault display. The MPA valve terminal provide serial interlinkage, up to 128 valves and diagnostics services. The faults of tomorrow will be localizedvia a CMS (condition monitoring system).By counting numbers of cycles, itwill be possible to determine whethermaintenance will soon be required on themechanical components connected to acylinder. An integrated valve ASIC on theCPX/MPA will provide this counter functionand generate a warning automatically– for specific channels and up to 128valve coils. This article was excerpted from “trends inautomation 6” magazine published byFesto Inc.Info Card 327Electronics packaging protection fromearthquakes and other threatsSan Francisco earthquake, 5:12 a.m., April 18, 1906, magnitude 7.8.Canadian representative: Calbrooke Marketing Inc., 800-265-7283Equipto Electronics Corporation ®351 Woodlawn Ave., Aurora, IL 60506-9988 U.S.A.,Tel: 800-204-7225, 630-859-7840Fax: 630-897-5314, Web: www.equiptoelec.com,e-mail: info@equiptoelec.comWhen the ground starts to shake, you don’t want to worry about the shock andvibration resistance of the enclosure for your electronics system. With our Heavy Duty line of seismic hardened electronic cabinets, you canmeet such stringent requirements as:• NEBS TR 63 for Zone 4 • Exceptionally high EMI/RFI attenuation• Mil-Spec 810 and 901 • Shielded I/O access and air filtering• FCC/VDE, EMP/TEMPEST • ISO standards 9001:2000• Protection against dust, shock and vibrationTo assist you, our experienced enclosure engineers areavailable for free consultations. It consists of 33 irregular shapedbones with a hole through the middlefor the spinal cord. The bones arecalled vertebrae, bony elements thatare separated from each other by a cartilage(a sort of spongy spacer thatserves as both gasket and shockabsorber). The spine is the main conduit andprotective shell for the spinal cord –the nerves from the brain to the limbs. But unlike mechanical systems thathave instrument panels to warn us ofimpending problems, the humanbody warns uswith pain. Some understandingof backpain has beengleaned by themeasurement ofspinal disorders. However, plainfilm radiographyis invasive andhas poor resolutionwhilemagnetic resonance techniques havedifficulty capturing dynamic jointmovements due to lengthy samplingtimes.Surface-based transducers used in“range of motion” testing cannotassess movements of singular vertebrae, only of spinal regions, and finally, surgical techniques, which trackobjects inserted into singular vertebrae, are impractical for widespread use. Therefore, the true relevancebetween spinal mechanicsand spinal function hasremained unknown due toinadequate technologies orinsufficient test populations.Dr. Gregory Kawchuckand his research team at theUniversity of Alberta areaddressing this problem with thedevelopment of a novel ultrasonictechnique for quantifying relativespinal motion. The processinvolves a non-invasive technique thatcan visualize internal load-deformationresponses in real time.Developed in the university lab, ultrasonic indentation uses an ultrasonicprobe to locate an anatomictarget of interest (vertebra) and isthen advanced into the skin to loadthe target externally. Bearings salesin Canada totaled US$725 million in 2005compared to the US$8010 million for all ofNorth America the same year.Canada’s motor vehicle manufacturingindustry – which accounted for the largestportion of bearings demand in 2005 – hasexperienced declining output levels inrecent years. However, the market for bearings inCanada is forecast to climb 3.1% per yearthrough 2010 to US$845 million, a turnaroundfrom the 2000-2005 period butless than projected sales gains region-wide.Overall economic and manufacturing outputwill accelerate, and Canadian automotiveproduction is expected to expand, spurring growth in related bearingsdemand through 2010.Bearings shipments by producers inCanada totaled US$240 million in 2005,leaving the nation with a trade deficitequivalent to about two-thirds of domesticdemand. Industry output levels havegrown sluggishly since 2000, hurt by risingsales of low-cost imports. As would beexpected, the U.S. is a major external supplierof bearings to the Canadian market.Global demandfor bearings isalso expected tocontinue upwardsHowever, West European producers suchas Germany, the UK and France are alsomajor sources. Given the diversity of applications, most types of bearings are representedin the Canadian market in moderate-to-sizablequantities.Shipments of bearings from facilities inCanada will rise at a slower rate thandemand, growing 2.8% annually toUS$275 million in 2010. Nevertheless, thisrepresents an improvement from 2000-2005 industry performance, with localmanufacturers benefiting from a pickup inbearings demand domestically and in keyexport markets. However, further inroadsinto domestic markets by less-expensiveforeign-made bearings and a continuingshift in production to overseas locations bydomestic companies will dampen shipmentgains through 2010, and the country’strade deficit in these products will continueto expand. The Canadian anti-frictionbearings manufacturing industry featuresmuch participation by the major multinationalproducers, including NTN,Schaeffler, SKF and Timken.Global demand for bearings is projectedto rise 5.5% annually to $42 billion in2010, accelerating from the 2000-2005period. Bearings demand will be stimulatedby a pickup in world economic growth, increased fixed investment activity, highermanufacturing production, and risingaerospace equipment and motor vehicleoutput.World Bearings (published 07/2006, 337pages) is available for US$5300 from TheFreedonia Group, Inc., 767 Beta Drive,Cleveland, OH 44143-2326.Info Card 320

It isnow possible to revert to the goodold days, when we started with NAD(Napkin-Aided Design). It has been myobservation over the years that the vastmajority of engineering designs start life asa sketch on a coffee-shop napkin. Theywould then progress through several levelsof more advanced sketch until weended up with working drawings. The introduction of CAD software helpedin many ways, but hindered in others. Yes,we can now draw more accurately, butthat can also be a problem in that it tendsto force us to become too precise too soonin the design process.Parametricsmeets ‘Napkin-Aided Design’Parametric solid modeling overcomesthat. No matter what the developmentlevel of a design, we can always get backto the NAD sketch to make changes, which reflect upward through the completepart and assembly modeling anddrawing process. The bad news is that parametric modelingcan introduce its own set of constraints. In particular, the order in whichfeatures are added or subtracted to buildup a part can be very significant.SolidWorks 2007 (solidworks.com)has introduced SWIFT (SolidWorksIntelligent Feature Technology) to overcomethis problem. If the designer tries toadd a feature that is “impossible” becauseof the sequence in which things were created, then the FeatureXpert functionalityexamines the problem and determines theuser’s intent. For example, consider therelatively innocuous-looking part in figure1. It consists simply of two extrudedblocks, a couple of fillets, and it has beenshelled out. So far so good.Next we want to apply a draft anglebetween the red faces and the green one.Previously this would generate an error, because the fillet has eliminated the junctionline between the faces. With SolidWorks 2007, however, thiscondition launches the FeatureXpert dialogbox instead. If you allow theFeatureXpert to continue, it will do itsbest to analyze your intent and to applythe correct draft as shown in figure 2.In particular, take a close look at thebrowser tree. The new Draft2 feature hasbeen inserted at the correct location, asthough you had applied the draft beforethe fillets and the shell.Admittedly, this could have been donein the past by moving the end-of-part indicatorbar above Fillet1, applying the draft, and then moving the end-of-part indicatorbar back. In the real world, however, thisis not always easily done on a complexpart with many features. It can be difficultto determine the “correct” location in thetree, plus this process takes extra time.SWIFT is also available in theSketchXpert and MateXpert functionalityto resolve problems with conflicting dimensionsand constraints in sketches and assemblies, along with the new FeatureXpert,FilletXpert and DraftXpert functions. These days, a great manymachines are built on a relativelysimple frame of standardstructural shapes.SolidWorks 2007 has greatlyimproved the design andanalysis of these frames. Allyou need to do is to placethe individual beam shapesin the correct locations. Thesoftware will then applyappropriate welds to joineverything together. Now comes the cunningpart. When you apply yourloads and perform the stressanalysis, the software doesnot mesh the frame into theusual large number of simpleelements and analyze them.Instead, it treats the frame forwhat it really is, being a relativelysimple structure containinga few simple elements. The end result is that theanalysis is performed considerablyfaster than if it hadused “traditional” finite-element methods.I once saw a poster that said “I finallygot it all together, but I forget where Iput it.” So, SolidWorks 2007 includes aninteresting search engine to help you findyour files. You can search by all or part ofthe file name, by text notes within the file, and by metadata such as the designer’sname, the creation or modification date, the project name, and so on. Wild cardcharacters work. You can search your local drive, net-PDMWorks 2007 eases the choreof document managementPDMWorks is a document managementsystem aimed specificallyat the SolidWorks files withinengineering workgroups. This can be avery big issue, even in a small office.Something as seeminglysimple as a doorknobcan end up involving100 drawings. Revisioncontrol, history archiving, and modify rightscan get very involvedvery quickly. The document managementsystem helpscontrol this situation.Files are stored in a centralvault, usually on a fileserver if two or more peopleare involved. Theycan be subdivided byproject or workgroup, sothat only those peoplewho have been authorizedfor a specific project or group of filescan access or modify them. Files must besigned out for editing, and when they aresigned back in PDMWorks automaticallycreates an archived history of the previousversion. The system adds a number of interestingcapabilities, including a new and easier-to-useinterface. This includes the abilityto sign out a file directly from withinWe want to apply draft angles between the red faces and the green ones. The FeatureXpert correctly resolves the draft problem.work drives, PDMWorks workgroups (seesidebar), the Design Library, and so on.Having found the desired file it can thenbe opened directly from withinSolidWorks Search.Bill Fane (bill_fane@bcit.ca) is a softwarereviewer and mechanical engineeringinstructor at BCIT in Burnaby, BC.If you found CAD Industry Watch interesting, fill in 345 on the Info Card.the SolidWorks file open dialog box. It isalso tightly integrated with the newsearch engine capabilities, so a user cansearch the vault for a file and then sign itout, all from within SolidWorks itself.James Achard, lead engineer for operations at SolidWorks userSkip Barber Racing Schools, and SolidWorks executives Jon Hirschtick, founder, Jeff Ray, COO and John McEleney, CEO, at the launch ofSolidWorks 2007 in Concord, MA.PDMWorks 2007 also supports integratedrevision tables. This means thatif a drawing contains a revision block, then it automatically updates to matchthe revision level and notes that areapplied when the file is checked back into the vault.Even a one-person office can benefitfrom this sort of automatic documentcontrol.

However, there are still “olives” to be found.R&W Metal Fabricating and DesignInc. (rwmetal.com), located in Brantford,ON, provides custom packaging solutionsfor automotive, commercial and industrialsuppliers. Large U.S. and internationalautomakers depend on the company todesign and develop cost effective componentracks. These racking solutions storeparts during the transportation and assemblyprocess.According to industry estimates, anautomaker can spend up to $50 milliondollars on its component racking alone.Due to the volume of racks required, thenumber of units (parts) each rack canaccommodate has a significant “trickledown” effect across the supply chain. Byincreasing the number of parts stored oneach one, costs can be reduced exponentially.R&W Metal has developed a distinctcompetitive edge in the design ofhighly optimized racking solutions formanufacturing. In most cases, R&W Metal starts witha model of the part to be racked. The modelsare typically provided by the automakerin a CATIA or UGS format. “Modelsare created using parametric tools,” saidengineering manager Jim Fleming, “whichsuits the automakers’ needs but is noteffective for R&W Metal Fabricating. Inorder for us to achieve maximum productivity,we use geometry-based tools toquickly make changes that can dramaticallyimpact an automaker’s bottom line.”The process usually goes like this: anautomotive supplier sends R&W MetalFabricating a CAD file from its primaryCAD system. Fleming and his team useKeyCreator CAD software from KubotekUSA (kubotekusa.com), to read andunderstand any popular CAD file format.Once the file is available in KeyCreator, the team can often turn around initial conceptswithin one hour. Not only does thisimpress existing customers, but it alsoenables R&W to move very quickly onnew business proposals.Fleming and his team strive for maximumspace optimization on their racks.Customers have come to expect the company’spackaging experts to offer additionalvalue in the rack design. There are timeswhen Fleming and his team shortcut thedevelopment process by taking their conceptsright to the customer’s doorstep.Rather than sending files back and forthbetween multiple groups involved in decision-making,Fleming conducts live simulationsof the racking options. These “roundtable” meetings ofteninvolve any number of stakeholders managingthe development process, e.g. designers, project managers, manufacturing engineers, union representatives and roboticsmanagers. Fleming uses KeyCreator softwareto conduct a highly visual collaborationwhere decision makers are able to seethe part and, in real time, understand theimplications of recommended changes.Fleming understands that key factorsinvolved in the rack design will impactergonomics, ease of extracting parts, robotic loading and plant floor concerns.Combining Fleming’s expertise withKeyCreator tools, a process that couldcause 10 or more revisions quicklybecomes an “olive.”Here’s where the automaker ultimatelyfinds the savings. When an R&W customeris able to maximize the number ofThe R&W design team has tapped KeyCreator to satisfy automotive supplier racking requirements. One automakerended up saving more than $1 million by implementing a simple design modification generated by the software.parts on a rack, the cost savings can bequickly quantified. Additional parts on arack means less racks must be transported.More parts and fewer trucks create dramaticsavings on items such fuel, fleetmaintenance costs and labor. This article was supplied by Kubotek USA.KeyCreator software is sold and supportedin Canada by Kubotek directly, and byCanadian resellers Cadwire (cadwire.com)and Cornerstone Technologies (cornerstonemold.com).Info Card 326PIC Design . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .27Pilz Automation Safety LP . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .47PTC Inc . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .44Quality Transmission Components . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .45Ralston Metal Products . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .24Raychem Circuit Protection . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .13Rittal Systems Ltd . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .10Rosta Inc . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .32RPM Mechanical Inc . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .39Schaeffler Canada . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .35SEW Eurodrive Inc . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .37SKF Canada Ltd . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .36Smalley Steel Ring Co . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .10SolidWorks . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .9Spirol Industries Ltd . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .36T.C.H. 50 Design Product News dpncanada.comAdvisory Board DirectionsSeptember 2006Trickle down effects of the energy sectorboom has eastern companies looking westBy Rob LemmenThis economy has been a funny onelately. Most ofthe economicindicators are sky high, but quite a few individualindustries are stillquite soft. Regionally, areas are behaving quitedifferently. In our ownbusiness of machine toolconsumables and mechanical componentdesign, we have seen quite a few localThe falloutfrom a $70+per-barrel ofcrude oilWant to grow the business? Here’s a tool that does justthat. You’ve got a great fab shop. All the latest technology. A verygood local reputation. But how do you get out of the “local box”?How do you reach a broader audience, make it aware of your presenceand capabilities — in short, grow your customer base?Step one: Start with the computer on your desk!PICKERING, ONTARIO — Andy Pavletich, founder and owner, A.P.S. MetalIndustries Inc, says his company specializes in stainless steel fabricating andforming of a variety of products (food processing equipment, hoppers, chutes, mixers, conveyor system parts, environmental products, packagingmachinery parts, electronic enclosures and cabinets, display units, lightingfixtures, product holding fixtures, medical equipment, furniture and appliancesand so on). The company employs 60-70 people and operates outof a 30,000 sq. ft. facility.“We opened in 1986,” Pavletich says, “and we’ve built our businesson a reputation for quality, quick turnaround on delivery —sometimesin a matter of a few days to a few hours — and a fair and competitiveprice. But we knew we had to tap new customers and markets if wewere to grow.”The company’s Purchasing and Materials Manager, Rob Zakojc sayshe’d used the Internet to try to find new customers, and came acrossMFG.com, an online production-level solution for OEMs and suppliersof engineered-to-order components, which instantly and intelligentlymatches buyer requirements with potential suppliers possessing the rightexpertise, credentials, and capacity for the job being sourced.“When I came across the site,” Zakojc says, “and took it for a test drive,I thought this might be the tool I’ve been looking for.”Zakojc says that for his purposes the site is a helpful new tool. “I’m ableto check at any time of the day what RFQs are out there,”he says. “And the real plus is that when I see an RFQ forfabrication or forming, I know that company has thework, wants it done, and wants it done now. If theymatch our capabilities and capacity, I’ll bid. And it’s soeasy. I can’t even begin to tell you how much time I’vesaved over traditional means of finding prospects andnew customers. I can easily pull down and process 50RFQs a day. When I get here in the morning, I turn mymachine on and the site comes up. It stays on until I turnmy machine off at night.”Using the siteZakojc says that using MFG.com is in at least one waylike using any other new tool: The more you use it, the easier it is to use.“The first couple of times we used it,” he says, “we really didn’t understandOntario (Stoney Creek, Hamilton and St.Catharines) companies experiencing theirown boom. The common factor in quite a few ofthese success stories is theenergy sector: in otherwords, the fallout from a$70-plus-per-barrel ofcrude oil on world markets.Whether it is power generationor naturalresources, the energy sectoris definitely climbing. This is having atrickle-down effect for a lot of metalworkADVERTORIALwhere we were in the biddinghierarchy. It was like taking arisk, which is true of most thingsin business. But soon I becamevery familiar with the site.”Extend your reachZakojc says that clearly one ofthe reasons A.P.S. Metaland automation related companies. The following companies illustrate thistrend perfectly. There is All Tool Automation Inc. with30 employees in a 16,000 ft 2 facility inHamilton, ON, operated by father andson, Gordon and David Viles (director ofautomation projects and general manager, respectively). All Tool Automation (alltoolgroup.com)started operations in 1986as an automated systems manufacturerthat also did tool and die work.Today it still does a lot of fixtures forthe automotive industry that they sayremains quite buoyant due to overseasPickering fab shopturns to online service to findnew customers and grow its businessOne of three Trumpf L-3030 4,000 watt laser cutters with flying optics, dual 60” X 120” material beds and state-of-the-art nesting softwareinside the A.P.S. facilities in Pickering, Ontario.Industries joined MFG.com was to spread its reach and broaden its exposureto potential new customers. And apparently it’s done just that. “Thefact that we’re Canadian,” Zakojc says, “a lot of these customers would nothave even thought to look here. At the sametime, I wouldn’t have thought to look at someof the smaller areas in the U.S. or even assumethat I could work for these companies. Buttoday freight is not really an issue whetheryour shipping from Toronto to Tennessee orChicago, and NAFTA has opened the tradedoors. What companies have to deal withnow is really nothing more than some minorpaper work issues.”Before joining, for example, Zakojc says hehad a handful of U.S. customers. Today, he has15 US companies and that number is growing.“What the site really does,” he says, “is makeeverybody my neighbor, regardless where they are. Manymore opportunities are arising in sensing, control and communications in deep wellapplications. The Windsor-Essex CountyDevelopment Commission reports thatRomeo Machine and Manufacturing Inc.has partnered with an oil sands operatorin the Fort McMurray, AB, area. With thisbusiness deal, both companies are addingto their order books and are co-operativelyquoting on new assignments.Romeo President Vincent Del Ducaadmits to being somewhat surprised thatcompanies that far away are eager to sendassignments “all the way to Windsor” forwork that he says “we can do in oursleep.”According to Roman Dzus, actingexecutive director of the Commission(choosewindsor.com), “Alberta simplydoes not have the infrastructure locally todeal with such a concentrated demand forservices, including those that are availablehere among our large concentration ofmold, tool, die and machinery expertise.”According to information gathered byCanadian Manufacturers and Exporters,(cme-mec.ca) Alberta’s oil sands projectswill create a number of opportunitiesrequiring structural steel, metal fabricating, machining, maintenance supplies, boilers, pressure vessels and tanks, automation systems, turbines, pumps andenvironmental technologies, and more.Where does the energy boom leaveyour business? Businesses in Alberta, suchas drilling rig analyst ToppingsEngineering featured in the June/July issueof DPN, are naturally experiencing thephenomenon first hand.Perhaps, if you don’t have a presence inAlberta already, the time may have comefor your business to turn its eye west (oreast, if you are in British Columbia).Rob Lemmen, is senior designer and projectconsultant with the Korver Engineering Ltd.division of E.M.
