LIVES Hagworthingham & Lusby
John Clayton, Hagworthingham LIVES co-ordinator,
was presented with a cheque for £250 in aid of
LIVES at the Lincoln Historical Search Society
meeting on Thursday the 15 th March.
Lincoln Historical Search Society is a metal-detecting
club based near Lincoln. The club was established
14 years ago and always welcomes new members. I
am the youngest member of the club and am also
the secretary.
Each year the club members raise money for LIVES
and nominate a branch of LIVES to receive the
donation. My Dad nominated Hagworthingham
LIVES to receive it.
John gave a short talk about the history of LIVES and the important role it plays in Lincolnshire. I
then presented him with the cheque.
HISTORY
Do you have any memories of the Coronation year for the July issue? Perhaps you have some
pictures of you in fancy dress, or at a street party? Maybe in another community if you didn't live in
Hagworthingham, but do now? Were you part of the crowd in London? Did you have a TV or go to
neighbours?
Please send any contributions to any member of the VV team or email to
For the Love of Dogs...
LIFESTYLE
Recipe: Linguine with Courgette, basil and Lemon
(Serves 2)
2 tbsp olive oil
2 medium-sized courgettes cut into thinnish half moons
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
A pinch of cayenne pepper
Salt
180g Linguine (or tagliatelle)
Finely grated zest of 1 lemon and ½ the juice
Generous glug of double cream
Big handful of basil plus leaves to sprinkle
Big handful of shaved parmesan plus extra to sprinkle
Freshly ground black pepper
Heat the oil over medium heat in a large frying pan. Add the courgette and garlic , a pinch of
cayenne and a generous sprinkling of salt. Cook gently for 8 to 10 minutes stirring occasionally
until the courgettes are soft but not browned.
At the same time, put the pasta on to cook following the instructions on the packet.
When the courgettes are soft, add the lemon juice and remove from the heat. Stir in the zest,
cream, torn basil and parmesan (plus a couple of tbsp of cooking water from the pasta to thin it
down.)
Season generously with pepper then drain the pasta and combine with the sauce. Toss together
then serve in wide bowls with a sprinkle of basil leaves and shaved parmesan on top.
David Preston
I was not brought up with dogs my family never having one, and in fact I was rather frightened of them. So it
was not until we were married that I found out what I had been missing. Chris’s family had always had dogs
and his mother had bred cockers and Bedlington’s and he knew just the breed he wanted – Mastiffs. I was
somewhat taken aback when I saw just what he was referring to, I rather fancied a daxie, something I have
since reconciled.
Our first attempts of finding a Mastiff failed miserably, and we settled for a Bullmastiff, sadly she only had a
short life thanks to a fellow Mastiff owner. Chris managed to locate a Mastiff, President of Shute ‘Titch’, and I
went off and got a bullmastiff. The 2 boys got on very well, just 6 weeks between them. The Mastiff was typical,
very aloof, whilst Red the bullmastiff craved attention which he got plenty of as we ran an ‘Inn’ at the time.
Little did I realise when that puppy arrived how much our lives would change. It had never been our intention to
show or breed and if it hadn’t been for the local training club we joined, we may never have done so. They
were so enthusiastic about our two that we drifted in to it, and at one of the early open shows we entered we
won five firsts in variety classes and reserve best in show with President of Shute. We were hooked! He was in
demand at stud and though he never made it to the ‘upper house’ he left his mark on the breed winning the
progeny award twice!
When we came into the breed in 1970, showing was starting to take off. It is well documented how thin on the
ground the breed had been. There were some quality dogs that come to mind but there were also some very
poor quality. We moved to Hagworthingham in 1989 bringing our Mastiffs and a few chickens with us. We have
lived here longer than anywhere else. Our involvement with dogs has been most rewarding and we have both
enjoyed judging at home and worldwide.
THE PARISH COUNCIL
Parish Council Report
Parish land (approx. 1.1 acres opposite the Raithby turn) - the Parish Council had been advised
to issue a Section 6 Notice to restrict the tenancy to the current tenant and not his successors.
Village Grass Cutting. It has been resolved that a contractor is to be used and quotations are
being sought. Prior to the contractor vote, it was also voted to keep the village mower, although
several modifications would have to be made in order for it to be used for mowing on the public
highways and it would also require registering and insuring.
Risk Assessment and Asset Register are required to be completed prior to completion of the
next Annual Return. An Internal Auditor is being sought. Standing Orders are currently under
review.
Following the resignation of Heather Temple-Marsh, the new Responsible Finance Officer is Cllr
Mark Clayton.
Village signs. Mr Skipworth & Mr Wain will repair and treat the signs when they have dried out.
Canon Peter Coates confirmed that for the time being, the PCC no longer wish to accept any
donations from the Parish Council in relation to the upkeep of the churchyard. He also advised
that he did not want to pursue a meeting on the use of the church building, but would invite any
interested individuals to contact him with a view to building a working group.
Planning matters have moved on in that ELDC have sent notification that hard copy distribution
of planning applications will cease on 1 April 2012 with comments required to be returned by
email.
The £300 Community Grant kindly donated to the PC by our District Councillor L-J Marfleet is
being passed on directly to the Jubilee Party steering group, and they will be deciding how to
spend it.
Broadband Update. The Govt. has approved LCC’s plan to bring next generation Broadband to
Lincolnshire. The proposals will see 90% of properties receiving superfast speeds of at least 24
Mbps by 2015, with the rest guaranteed to get at least 2 Mbps. By 2017, everyone will be able to
enjoy superfast Broadband wherever they are in the county. http://www.onlincolnshire.org/Howwe-can-help/Residents/Register
Your Annual Parish Meeting and You!
Every year the Parish Council has to organise an Annual Parish Meeting, and this year it will be
held on Thursday 26th April at 6.30 pm in the Church. The Annual Parish Meeting is your chance
to have your say about issues in Hagworthingham, and also for the Parish Council to report to
residents on what it has accomplished in the last year. There can also be reports from village
groups, organisations and charities, so they can let the rest of the village know what they’ve been
doing.
So, if you have any ideas, suggestions or thoughts about this village - please come along and
share them, or just come along and listen to the discussions. What would improve life here in
Hagworthingham? What bugs you about this village? What would make it an even lovelier place to
live?
This is a meeting for the electorate, and whether your ideas are big or small - we want to hear
them. We are even providing refreshments!
Thursday 26 th April, 6.30pm in the Church.
NATURE AND ENVIRONMENT
Conservation Walks: New Permissive Access, Hagworthingham
9

NATURE AND ENVIRONMENT
Hagworthingham Road Verges
Perhaps partly inspired by the recent Sarah Raven
TV series about enriching road verges with flowers,
it has been suggested that some roadsides in and
around the village could be made more attractive
both to people and to wildlife. Abundant flowers
throughout Spring and Summer could be enjoyed
by people while providing food for pollinating insects
like honey bees, bumble bees and butterflies. A
preliminary assessment suggests that there could
be some good potential sites/spots for doing
interesting things, as long as villagers were in
favour of the broad idea and interested in being
involved.
It is very early days still in what would be a long term project, and getting residents involved is a
key part of it. There is bound to be a variety of ideas but careful planning could satisfy lots of
different requirements.
Roy A. Harris
Ragwort
The control of Ragwort comes under two government acts; the Weeds
Act 1959 (for the whole of the UK) and the Ragwort Act 2003 (England
and Wales only). Under these laws, governmental authorities can serve
clearance notices to prevent the weed from spreading. If appropriate, in
the first instance, approach the owner/occupier of the land on which
ragwort is growing and request them to take steps to clear the weed.
If ragwort is growing on the verges of motorways or trunk roads the
Highways Agency should be contacted. If the ragwort is on the verges
of minor roads the complaint should be directed to the local highway
authority. Tel: 08457 50 40 30 http://www.highways.gov.uk
In England DEFRA is responsible for enforcing the Weeds Act 1959
and Ragwort Act 2003. If the problem of ragwort growing on adjacent
land cannot be resolved then a Weed Act complaint form can be
completed. Further information, can be obtained from DEFRA’s website
http://www.defra.gov.uk/rural/horses/topics/ragwort.htm or The Horses’
DIAMOND JUBILEE EVENT
Big Jubilee Picnic
Hagworthingham will be celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond
Jubilee by holding a “Big Jubilee Picnic” on Sunday 3 rd June on
the George and Dragon Play Area.
The concept is for adults to enjoy their own picnics while the
children are fed and entertained at a central table. There will be a
bouncy castle together with music, entertainment, and even a Royal
quiz. Games, side stalls and competitions for both children and adults
will run throughout the afternoon. The party will run from 2pm to 5pm, starting with a formal
opening, and culminating with the presentation of prizes and a mass release of red white and blue
balloons for a children’s balloon race.
Wendy Done has offered to coordinate the food for the children’s table and will be particularly
hoping for contributions from parents. Any other offers of help would be very welcome.
VILLAGE ORGANISATIONS
Hagworthingham Golf Society
The annual dinner and presentation was at the George & Dragon on the 18th January, with a fine
carvery by host Martin. Over the season 24 golfers played their part, 8 different courses produced
8 different winners and Andrew Lee & Mike Thompson registered maiden victories. Players
honoured for the season were Martin Ross for hitting an all-time low score of 11pts, an
achievement well worth recognising. Mike Thompson most consistent player with 8pts. Between
his best and worst scores, John Redman, bandit of the year for being in possession of
an 'obscenely high’ handicap!!! John Marshall and Keith Carpenter both went close this year so
both received a ‘so near yet so far’ award! The Mike Miles Memorial Trophy for the player who
records the best total over 5 rounds went to David Preston with a total of 183. Thanks to David
Preston for the organising, Martin Ross for the evening meals, John Marshal for running the raffle
On the 21 st March, 17 Hagg folk went into the countryside in search
of eagles and birdies; a new group of twitchers? No! The Hagg Golf
Society started their annual mission to tear up the county’s courses!
Louth Golf Club was our usual 1 st victim hosted by captain Mike
Robinson, providing many prizes and more importantly great
weather! A shame the golf couldn’t quite match up to the conditions,
with no one playing to their handicap. Closest to doing so was the
unlikely lad John Redman coming in with 35 hard earned points on
very tough greens. On the down-side for John, he now loses 3 of his
35 handicap for the next round. Mike Thompson followed John
closely with 34pts. Other prize winners, Trevor Hunt for a big hit down the 18 th for the longest
drive, David Preston for nearest the pin and Julian Miles for being the furthest down the fairway in
2 shots on the 10 th hole. Once again Martin served up a fine meal at the George and Dragon.
Next outing is at Newark on the 18 th of April.
HaggNet - network of help for Hagworthingham
Although the spring weather has taken over from the wintry weather, we would like to get a list of
help available for anyone who might need it. We hope to have something in place to help with
community interaction. Thank you to all of you who have shown an interest, offered help and
those that have noted they might need help. Contact - Nicky 588514 nicky@mutti.demon.co.uk
The WI had a very entertaining meeting in January when John Teanby, a local potter, gave us a
demonstration of various methods of producing and decorating pots. His work on the potter’s
wheel was very reminiscent of the interlude film used in the early days of BBC TV which
unfortunately some of us could remember!
The February meeting was abandoned because of the weather, but in March we had a very
interesting talk from Horace Liberty on Liberty’s of London. The history of the department store
from the early 20 th century was fascinating especially as the founder was a distant relation of the
speaker. Looking at the old photographs the family resemblance was very striking!
