Club TorqueI Just Wanted One!I grew up in Griffith NSW. My uncle Ben, now deceasedpurchased a brand new Jaguar Mk 2 2.4ltr(if my memory serves me right) in the late 50s. Itwas a lovely black car with red leather interior, andall that lovely woodwork. I was just a teenager at thetime but remember the car well. It was the envy ofmy father who owned the current model Ford (StarModel) V8 by contrast with plastic covered vinylseats. I guess my first desire, to own one of theseJaguars had its beginnings back then and I neverquite got over it. I recall that this car was regardedas a very prestigious car to own in those days with areputation for being very fast. The car stayed in the family for many years and inlatter years I often enquired after it with the thoughtthat maybe one day I might own it or one just like it.My last enquiry in 2009 revealed that the car hadrecently been sold and was to be parted out.I had to wait another 45 years or so before mydream would be realized.I wonder how many ‘baby boomers’ finallydecide (or can finally afford) in their retirementyears to buy the car they always wanted?I originally had my heart set on purchasing a Mark 2,and scanned the internet for approximately sixmonths trying to hide my determination rather unsuccessfullyfrom my wife. During this period I educatedmyself on many of the finer details of thesecars and their values. I talked to a lot of sellers andpersonally inspected a few local cars, but was disappointedwith what I found. I was determined not topay too much and found as usual sellers expectationsexceeded my willingness to pay.My search for a Mark 2 was not proving very successfulwhen my brother-in-law in Sydney sent me aphoto of a 1966 ‘S’-type up for auction. I was wellaware of this model but had initially decided againstit, probably based on nothing more than the popularityof the Mark 2. However with a little more research,I decided it really did suit my style, age, andconsiderable physical size. I was impressed by theCover StoryThe main graphic on the cover is airbrushart of the 1960s 'S'-type from the official1990 Jaguar Calendar. The insert is from anofficial ‘S’-type brochure from 1967In this edition of Classic Marque we celebrate50yrs (1963-1968) of this iconic (andunder appreciated) Jaguar saloon...write-ups and testimonials from those who owned‘S’-types and information sourced from the forum at“Jag Lovers” (what a great web site) and foundother owners of ‘S’-types urging me to “just do it!”The sophistication of the car with the IRS, luxuriousinternal finish (The Businessman’s Express indeed)finally won me over and I decided this was the Jaguarmodel for me.Nothing has changed that opinion. I have nowowned the car for just a little over 3yrs. and just lovegetting behind the wheel for a drive. The rest of this story can be found in “Member’sPride” page 17.So by now you realise you will need to forgive mefor my indulgence in this edition of CM as we takethe opportunity to celebrate 50 Years, since the productionof the original ‘S’-type. (1963—2013). Ithank Doug Tilley, another very discerning andproud ‘S’ Type owner, who has assisted in puttingtogether material for this celebratory edition and alsothank the editors of the International ‘S’-type Register,David and Patricia Reilly for permission touse material from their regular newsletters.Philip Prior Editor‘S’-type1963—2013An Apology . . . . I was so eager to draw attentionto the plight of our Register Secretary, Geoff Thomas, who apparently, “….needs to be relieved…”I managed to leave out some important details relevantto the next Compact Register Meeting to beheld at the home of Bill and Heather Jones,If you plan to attend this meeting ….. Club TorquePRESIDENT’SREPORTFirst I must thank all themembers that have supportedthe Volvo Vikings whoare doing a wonderful jobraising funds for the CancerCouncil. I think this is acause which is near and dearto many in the Club, as the number of members whohave been directly affected by cancer or who knowof relatives and friends in this unfortunate position, isreally quite large. The best hope for a cure lies with those who dedicatethemselves to medical research in this andmany other fields of medicine. We hear of breakthroughsand new treatments all the time, and it isyour support to these causes and the enthusiasticpeople who seek out donations that make it all possible. You will hear more of the Volvo Vikings in thenext few weeks as we plan to ask Dane to give atalk on his adventures in the “Shitbox Rally” with themighty Volvo. While on the subject of guest speakers or otheritems of interest at General Meetings, your suggestionswould be gratefully received by the Committee. We do have some interesting speakers arranged forthe next few meetings, but we all know there aremany more ideas that you the members will have. The Christmas break-up is not really all that faraway and any suggestions for ideas or even an organiserfor that night would be appreciated.A number of our members are busily preparing forthe trip across to Wollongong for the National Rally, which has been organised by the Jaguar DriversClub of Australia. The programme is varied andthere will be something of interest for everyone tosee and do. It sounds like it is going to one of thebest attended for quite some time as I believe therehave been around 300 registrants, which must beclose to a record. A number of Presidents will beattending and I am looking forward to meeting themand putting a face to the name. It may provide theopportunity to share thoughts on how clubs cangrow and maintain the interest in our favourite motorcar.Over the years I have enjoyed a very good relationshipwith the well-known Jaguar repair people inAdelaide, both as a customer, usually very intermittentbecause I am one of those DIYers, and asfriends. As they will tell you I will at times pick theirbrains (although it has worked the other way as well)‘S’-type1963—2013and help has always been willingly provided. Thiswas again demonstrated only this week, when thenew Daimler decided to show an unwillingness tostart when hot and I needed some help. The workshopwas full and very busy, I suspect with some ofthe cars being serviced to go to Wollongong. Myquestions were answered and hands-on help providedand the car now appears to be happy onceagain.I would like to take this opportunity to thank all thosein the Jaguar repair trade for the help they havegiven to me personally over the years, including thislast episode. I will not mention names, but you allknow who you are------“thanks fellas”.The point of this little story is quite simple. Not onlyare the Jaguar repair people there to run a business, they are also genuine enthusiasts and love thesecars as much as we do and deserve our support. So, when your car next needs a service, a majorrepair or a spare part, please support your preferredJaguar repairer, I know they will appreciate it.I will next see you at the May General Meeting andleave you in the very capable hands of Di who willlook after the April meeting and any matters arisingduring my absence. Ros and I are going to touraround NSW and Victoria following the Rally.Thank you Di and may you all continue enjoyingyour Jaguars, Club events and most important of allone another’s friendship.Peter4

Club TorqueLetters to the EditorJust Great ServiceI wanted to make some very positivecomments about recent experiences with a serviceprovider and although it may seem strange to bewriting a letter to myself as the editor of Classic Marqueit did seem the best way to communicate thedetails. Hopefully I not only pass on a very positivemessage but also encourage others to use this sectionof the magazine.Over the last three years I have had reason to transporta classic car interstate. Firstly the ‘S’ Type fromSydney, then the XJ Series 1 from Newcastle andrecently a BMW 735il from the Gold Coast. On eachoccasion I have engaged the services of CEVA Logistics,a national carrier well known in the industry. On the first two occasions the vehicles arrived unscathedand on time as promised. However with thetransport of the BMW it was a little more complicated.I had a call from the Adelaide depot to saythe car had arrived but that in transport the ‘shark finaerial’ had been broken. They admitted liability andsuggested I get quotes for repairs and they wouldrefund the costs. So despite the annoyance at thedamage, I was impressed with the service. I thennoticed that the glove box handle / latch was alsobroken. After checking my extensive portfolio of photostaken prior to departure from Queensland I wasable to send photos of before and after and requestthat this be included in the repair bill. The service by CEVA Logistics has been faultless.Without hesitation they agreed to meet the cost ofrepair, which was a significant amount, and at alltimes have been most helpful.Philip PriorPS. In hindsight taking extensive photos of a vehicleprior to transportation is a very good idea.A Thank You Letter . . .‘S’-type1963—2013I would like to thank the club for accepting me intoyour membership and now enjoying the benefits ofthe club. I note that you didn’t receive any letters tothe editor last month so thought I would send this in.I attended the January rally to Currency Creek whichwas very relaxed and a chance to meet other membersEvan Spartalis has been trying to get me to join formany years until I eventually succumbed. My currentcars are a Jaguar XJ6 series 1 which is in originalcondition and was Bryson delivered hence theRRR333 numberplateEvan has maintained it for the last 10 years and itsnow turned over 300,000 Klms and runs like a clock, and is a really good car to drive, and very reliable. Itis my 10th Jaguar which ranged from a pair of Stypes with 4 figure number plates which I had for 8years, then two series 2 and a 1979 series 3 whichwas best forgotten. It was sold when it reached80,000 klms and was a lesson on how things deterioratedafter Leyland got involved. Then recently a3 litre AWD X type. There were others. My other cars are a 1973 Rolls Royce which providesan interesting comparison with the 1973 Series1 especially on the handling front, and a 1955Morris Minor with 65,000 original milesOver the years I have had over 100 cars but the Series1 is by far my favourite and still can be competitivewith modern cars, as long as Evan keeps servicingit.Thank you again for accepting me in the club,Roger FrinsdorfEditor’s Note: Thank you Roger, it is great to knowhow members feel about our club and even better tosee it in writing this way. Hopefully others will followyour example and send in a letter.5

The XK Register takes a run to Forest Orchards wherethey learnt about the “Birds and the Bees”On Sunday the 3 rd March the XK Register held a runto Forest Orchards. The orchard is operated by clubmembers, Graeme and Fiona Schultz and their 2sons. The orchards are located in Forest Rangeand cover 25 acres with another 35 acres of bushland.Graeme and Fiona , initially grew premiumquality, pesticide free apples and decided around 18years ago that they should convert to Organic, andtoday the farm is renowned for producing Australia’sBest Certified Organic Apples. They grow RoyalGala, Fuji’s, Pink Ladies, Jonathon’s, GrannySmith’s, Red Delicious and Golden Delicious Apples.never tasted an apple so sweet and crisp.Graeme explained some of the issues with organicgrowing and storage. Where most apples wouldnormally to treated with chemicals and then storedin refrigeration for quite some time their apples arestored in cool rooms with extremely low oxygen andvery high nitrogen levels to slow the breathing of theapple and hence keeping if fresh without chemicals. The weather was ideal and a few of us were able totake the roof off and wind through those tight bendsand avoid the occasional cyclist. We arrived to aperfectly clean sorting and storage shed whereGraeme and Fiona were setting up tables and chairsout the back, overlooking the orchards. After a quicklook at Graeme’s two Ducati motor cycles we weregiven a lesson on organic apples.Graeme lowered a bin of Royal Gala apples into alarge stainless steel trough of water where the applesfloated onto a sorting platform to have anydamaged apples removed. They then went througha water spray to remove dust ,sorted for size andthen finally packed into recyclable packing crates forstorage and subsequent distribution. On this occasionwe were allowed to sample the apples andwere each given a bag to pack our own. I haveWe were then indulged with some fresh basketpressed pear and apple juice. The process was certainlylabour intensive but a few helped out with thepressing. We enjoyed our juice while eating our picniclunches. For desert Fiona had baked two beautifulapple pies which were served with whippedcream. After lunch we took a stroll through the orchards to abeautiful stone building on the hill. Their son Kym,who is also an apiarist when he is not in the orchard, explained and showed the equipment used to extractthe honey from the hives and answered somequestions from a few club members about the birdsand the bees. (Maybe just the bees).I would like to extend a huge thankyou to Graeme,Fiona and Kym for their time and effort which ensureda thoroughly enjoyable and informative day forus all at Forest Range.Keep an eye out for Forest Orchards Organic Apples. You’ll taste the difference.Di Adamson13

MEMBER’S PRIDEThe story of cars owned and loved by our membersClassic AdelaideMy car was delivered 23 December 1958 to Henlys,London and sold to Henley of Shelmonders in GoudHurst Kent. There is no U.K history. It was importedto Tasmania in 1973 and owned initially by Dr. P FPaesich and then Rodney Bye of Launceston. It wasfinally found almost with “ Rigor Mortis “ under a treein an open paddock by Bryan Wilson then of Piccadillyin 1981. I purchased the rusted out car in 1982.On the day I arranged to pick up the vehicle thankfullyon wheels it was abandoned in the street ,theprevious owner long gone from that address. On seeing the “wreck“ on a trailer Rayeena lookedat me with the look wives give husbands consideredto be totally “bonkers“ and suggested I should take itto the nearest tip. The only part not rusted was thealuminium bonnet.Over the next 3 years John Pagnussat working in ashed behind his home at Glynde stripped the car tobare metal and repaired all surfaces before the rebuild. The rear end and rear mudguards were beyondhelp having been cut up and botched on anumber of occasions. Terry McGrath in Perth had aspare car and I gratefully accepted replacementparts and a new wiring loom. Two rear wings wereordered from D.K.Engineering in Middlesex U.K. andfitted like a surgical glove. John had worked forEnzo Ferrari and was exported to Australia to workaluminium and other metals at the CommonwealthAircraft Factory at Avalon before coming to freelancein Adelaide. He restored many fine motor carsincluding O`Neil's blower Bentley`s and a C TypeJaguar that subsequently went back to the U.K. Hehand made parts including radiators for early M.G`s.The original 3.4 L motor was rebuilt and balanced byChris Waldock who also rebuilt the limited slip diff. The Moss gearbox was rejuvenated by BrianCollins. Painting took place in Tony Cafasso`s studioand Alby Voyer upholstered the seats using twoConnolly hides provided by my son in law Ben Connolly.Horry Collins tailored the soft top with originalhorse hair filling and Bob Hansford of LivingstoneMufflers made the stainless steel exhaust system toJaguar specifications. XJ 6 calipers pads andbooster for the front and Koni shock absorbers tookcare of suspension and anchors. Sunshine VitreousEnamel renewed the manifolds and Adelaide Wheeland Rim Works the wire wheels. When completed I entered the car at the NationalConcourse the Club hosted in Adelaide in 1985. Wecame second in class to Noel Roscrow`s XK 150fixed head coupe. Considering the size of Noel`sworkshop and specialists he had working for him wewere very happy with the result. Points were deductedfor the modified brake system. The car wasvoted “MOST DESIRABLE CAR “ that year. I haveenjoyed driving the car with second engine a 3.8 Ltriple carbie , straight port head and Celica gear boxprepared by Brian Woodcock, ex Weapons Researchengineer now living in Kapunda.Restoration Pictures 1982Targa Adelaide 2012With other club members I have been in four ClassicAdelaide events and last year in the Targa Adelaide. In this event I entertained the crowd on theWednesday night with a 360 degree manoeuvre14

which amazed me as well as the spectators at theAdelaide Showgrounds. The car looked magnificentamongst the German ,Italian and other entries inlast year`s “ Melbourne Mille “ . We toured the VictorianAlps encountering snow in Thredbo in Octoberand admiring glances from onlookers at everystop. It`s second longest trip was by boat to Christchurchand the South Island with members of theXK register. Onslow Billinghurst and Richard Smithhave given helpful advice and also much neededand appreciated hands- on help over the years.I am considering taking XK 1958 back to her birthplaceto do some touring in the U.K. and Europe.Retirement is wonderful particularly when you haveall the time in the world to tinker on your Jaguar. Nojokes about gynaecologists carrying out engine repairsvia the exhaust system please !A/Prof. Ossie Petrucco J.P. RFD.‘S’-type Styling…Sir William Gets His Way!Following is a description of Sir William’s stylingof the “S‟-type from “Cat Out of the Bag”, inwhich Peter Wilson describes the years 1961-66in Jaguar’s Competition Department. The followingtext has been selected from an article in theNewsletter of the International ‘S”-type Register, the (Editor’s notes) are those of the editor of thatnewsletter. We thank the editors for their kindpermission to use this material.Towards the end of August(Ed: 1962), we arrived at workone morning to find Sir Williamalready in our shop, togetherwith body designer, Bill Thornton. His presence certainlyensured a very brisk start tothe day‘s activities! Almost immediatelya knock on theGreen door‘ (Ed: entrance tothe Competition Department.)signalled the arrival of a forklift truck carrying a Mk 2 frontend wooden buck. This was brought in and lifted onto our large 8 feet x 8 feet surface table, whilst simultaneouslya labourer arrived with a sack truckloaded with Plasticine.Following a bit of instruction from Sir William, accompaniedby the usual arm and hand waving toindicate what he had in mind, he left. Bill Thorntontook off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves, climbed uponto the surface table and, using nothing moreelaborate than an ordinary table knife and spoon, heset to work. During the course of the following weekand after many visits from Sir William, who on occasionswould make a few changes to the Plasticinehimself, the front end style of what was to becomethe ‘S‘-type, emerged. When Sir William was satisfied, the buck was taken away and three or fourmonths later the proto type ‘S‘-type body shell arrivednext door in the Experimental Department. This was typical of the way in which styling was developedat Jaguar. Sir William was the chief stylist. He knew in his mind the shape he wanted and hadvarious people in the Engineering Division createthis in sheet metal, weldingwire frame work, wood and soon, until he could see in frontof him his vision. Not for Jaguarthe huge sophisticatedstyling studios, the army offlash suited stylists, who todaymasquerade in public asthe car designer even thoughthey only create the out-sideshape and interior style. Theonly stylist Jaguar had wasSir WilliamWhilst the ‘S‘-type shape wastaking place in our Shop, Bob Blake took a keen interestbut did not attempt to interfere. He wasn‘t tooimpressed with the end result and thought he coulddo better. Now Bob had recently bought TVC 420,the ex-Bill Heynes Sherwood Green Mk 1 3.4 saloonwhich, following use as an Experimental Departmentfleet test car, had be-come surplus to requirements. We lost Bob for six weeks at the beginning of Septemberdue to back surgery. Whilst recuperating, hekept his hand in by modifying the front end of his Mk1, to reflect how he felt the ‘S‘-type should havelooked.(Story Continued on page 19)15

Jaguar ‘S’-typePolice CarsWhen the 3.8 litre ‘S’-type was introduced in October1963, British police forces became very attractedto them. The car having a considerably largerboot and better range than the Mark II. ‘S’-typePolice cars were fitted out very differently from yourtraditional ‘S’-type executive limousine. The Police Stypes often had the rear seat removed for evenmore space. The calibrated Speedo was located sothat it was easily read by the observer. Vinyl wasused for flooring and all of the walnut dash gave wayto satin black paint, radios and switchgear to controlsirens and hailers. All ‘S’-type traffic cars were painted white with thetraditional blue light and searchlights mounted onthe roof. Area cars were painted black.A number were fitted with 3.8 litre E Type enginesand low ratio back axles to give brilliant performance. These cars could outpace most of the cars ofthe day. The UK Police Services were a huge corporatecustomer for Jaguar. Although some individualforces bought only a few cars, others bought a largenumber, the total number of ‘S’-type police cars builtis unknown.Unusual features of Police ‘S’-typesBlack Area cars usually had a DG250 automaticgearbox and white Traffic cars had the manualtransmission, without overdrive, to save money. When the DG automatic gearbox was fitted, a specialpawl was designed that did not allow Park orLow to be selected. There was also no Park or Lowposition on the gear indicator on the steering column. The transmission had those gears internally, but they were blocked off. Arriving at the scene ofcrime, the driver would sometimes throw the selectorinto Park before the car had stopped. Soon, TheMet had a collection of blown transmissions. The right-hand fog light position was fitted with afixing plate for the ‘gong’ behind the grill, whichwould have been supplied and fitted by the policeforce after delivery.Police ‘S’-types were not fitted with a ‘leaper’. It hada continuous strip of chrome running the length ofthe bonnet. This was done for two reasons: cost;and that by 1967, new safety regulations were cominginto effect and the Police were taking the leadwith the elimination of the ‘dangerous’ leaper. Most Police cars did not have a heater box and thewater lines were capped off. Authorities did not wanttheir officers sitting around comfortably in their cars.A modification that all ‘S’-types should have had,was the fitting of a ‘Jaguar Handbrake Release ButtonGuard’. Since The Met’s Police cars no longerhad a Park function on the gearbox, the driver hadto rely upon the parking brake. On occasions, thecar would arrive at a crime scene, and as the driverexited, the button would accidentally get bumped, the officer catching his trouser leg on the handle button, releasing the brake. It is said that, in one case, the driver was severely injured when the car rolleddownhill. The Met’s design of ‘handbrake hood’ alleviatedthe problem by preventing a quick-exiting‘Bobby’ from accidentally releasing the handbrake.Sadly, only one ‘S’-type Police car survives todayDoug Tilley16

The Story of“66 CAT”My 1966 ‘S’ type with Qld. registration 66-CAT, wasbeing offered for Auction by Classic Throttle Shop, awell established classic car dealership in Sydney, that was conducting their inaugural classic car auction. After having my brother-in-law (who has ownednumerous classic cars himself and needed little encouragement)inspect the car and report that itseemed to be everything the promotion and photosclaimed, I decided a trip to Sydney was inevitable.Being the only bidder on the night I was successfulin the purchase of the car (6 th Dec 2009) I was ofcourse like a kid with a new bike. The car came with a few nice extras such as powersteering and heated rear window and with some historicrecords and a pile of receipts. I have no historyof the car prior to 1993. Jim Leicht, of ToowoombaQld. owned the car from at least 24 th March 1993 to12 th May 2007. He sold the car to Sandy Brinkmanof Noosa, Qld., who owned the car from 12 th May2007 to 6 th Dec 2009. Sandy clearly did not use thecar a great deal but was successful in gaining aprize with it at the Noosa Car Show.Jim Leicht, had in the mid nineties carried out anextensive restoration of the vehicle with approximately$60,000 worth of receipts being supplied withthe purchase. (Don’t you just love that…. ) This restorationincluded a bare metal re-spray. The car Ihave been told by Jim was originally Golden Sand, ithad been painted white before his purchase and hechanged the colour to Light Oyster Gold (metallic).MEMBER’S PRIDEThe story of cars owned and loved by our membersThe restoration included a complete internal restorationwith carpets, leather seats and all interior liningsand trim replaced, new woodwork, new wiringharness, some new chrome, new wire wheels (5)with Pirelli tyres. There is also evidence in the receiptsthat the motor had an overhaul at the sametime, however it is clear to me now that this overhaulwas not as thorough as it could have been and Ihave since removed the motor and transmission fora complete rebuild to my satisfaction and for peaceof mind. But is it a 3.4 ltr. or a 3.8 ltr?At this point there is a little twist to the story thatsome in the club are well aware of. The car was soldto me as having left the factory as a 3.4ltr.(Confirmed by the Heritage Certificate) and hadbeen converted to 3.8ltr. I didn’t think much moreabout it at the time, I was delighted to have successfullypurchased the car and was happy to have a3.8ltr. However curiosity got the better of me. Thereceipts from the partial rebuild in 1995 itemisedamongst other things the fitting of 3.8 rings. Yet theblock is clearly embossed 3 ½ Litre, and the enginenumbers confirmed this. Could it be that the motorwas bored to 3.8 ltr. specifications by a previousowner? You can imagine my curiosity that turned toconfusion when my learned friends on the “Jag LoversForum” assured me “It just cannot be done!”Sometimes we can have just enough knowledge tobe dangerous. So without ‘boring’ you too much, I discovered that ithad been bored to 3.8ltr.specs., which was apparentlya common practice for racing engines, but iswell beyond the limits recommended by Jaguar for a3.4l block. So a comprehensive rebuild of motor andtransmission followed with a standard 3.4ltr. block. With the body and interior restoration of such a highquality the car has had only a few upgrades since, including electric cooling fan, rebuilt power steering, some exhaust modifications and the fitting of correctfull size tyres. This car is truly my pride and joy and a delight toown and drive.Philip Prior17

The Cat’s GiggleCricket ExplainedIn order to assist people who are not familiar withthe game of cricket, we offer this explanation.Cricket is a game in which there are two sides—one‘out’ and the other ‘in’.Each player in the side that is ‘in’ goes out, andwhen he is out, and when he is out, comes in, thenthe next player goes out, until they are out, and thencomes in.When the side that is ‘in’ is all out, the side that hasbeen ‘out’ goes ‘in’ and the side that was ‘in’ goes‘out’ and tries to get out the side that was ‘in’.Sometimes there are players still ‘in’ and not outwhen the side that is ‘in’ is finally out. When both sides have been‘in’ and ‘out’, including thosenot out and no longer ‘in’ -that is the end of the game.I do hope this has cleared upany confusion about thegame.Only 50.000 miles . . .A blonde was trying to sell her old car but was havinga lot of problems because the car had 250,000miles on it. One day she told her problem to a brunettethat she worked with. The brunette told her:"There is a possibility to make the car easier to sell, but it's not legal.""That doesn't matter," replied the blonde, "if I onlycan sell the car.""Okay," said the brunette. "Here is the address of afriend of mine. He owns a car repair shop. Tell him Isent you and he will turn the counter in your carback to 50,000 miles. Then it should not be a problemto sell your car anymore." The following weekend, the blonde made the trip to the mechanic.About one month after that, the brunette asked theblonde: "Did you sell your car?""No," replied the blonde, "why should I? It only has50,000 miles on it."Hey Doc . . . .A mechanic was removinga cylinder head from themotor of an XJ Jaguarwhen he spotted a wellknownheart surgeon in hisshop. The surgeon was there waiting for the service managerto come take a look at his car when the mechanicshouted across the garage, "Hey, Doc, can Iask you a question?"The surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to wherethe mechanic was working on the Jaguar. The mechanicstraightened up, wiped his hands on a rag."So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, takethe valves out, repair any damage, and then putthem back in, and when I finish, it works just likenew. So how come I get such a small salary and youget the really big bucks, when you and I are doingbasically the same work?"The surgeon paused, smiled, leaned over, and whisperedto the mechanic..."Try doing it with the engine running"21

- T E C H F I L E S -Club Torque‘S’-type BrakeLights - Aaaagh!I am not sure that I personally qualify to be writingthis months TECH FILE. But in the absence of anysubmission by others far more qualified I have writtenthis article that should be regarded more as aDIY Jaguar enthusiasts solution toa common problem in the hopethat it may be of help to someone. From the day I purchased my ’S’ -type in 2009 I had the ongoing issueof failing brake lights. Thelights are of course operated by thein-line pressure switch on the sideof the engine block. This arrangementin itself, even when theswitch does work is somewhat inefficientin that the lights are ratherslow in coming on given that theyrely on brake pedal pressure. Tomake things worse if the pressureswitch fails as I found they continually did despiteconstant replacement, there is no way of knowingone is driving without brake lights. For me the solution was cheap, efficient anda DIY job, resulting in a reliable trouble free andsafe brake light system.I determined that by fitting an electric switch on thepedal, wired into the existing pressure switch loomwhich is left in place, so it is easily reversed, andinstalling a high LED brake light in the rear windowwith an indicator that can be seen in the rear viewmirror I would resolve all issues. So it was off to Repco where I purchased a genericbrake pedal switch, in this case it was a Nissanswitch. The switch has to be what is called a“normally closed” switch. Meaning that as the switch‘S’-type1963—2013sits in your hand the points are closed or the circuitis closed permitting electric current. Why is this important?Because. the switch has to be mounted onthe drivers side, not the firewall side of the pedal. Ifound this very simple by manufacturing a metalbracket and fixing it in position under the dash sothat when the pedal is in its normal rest position, pressure is exerted on the switchholding the switch points open(breaking the circuit) preventing anycurrent and therefore not lighting thebrake light. Properly adjusted, theslightest pressure on the pedal, allowsthe switch to close immediatelylighting up the brake lights. Now one important point here is thatit is necessary to provide a flat spoton the brake pedal at the point itmakes contact with the switchplunger. I was able to grind a smallflat spot first but then fashioned ametal bracket with a broader flatsurface to fit over the pedal and fixed it in place withsome Selleys ‘Need-it’ ( a wonderful product)While at Repco I picked up a very neat LED brakelight strip for the rear window and wired it into thestandard loom behind the tail lights. The indicatorlight can be seen in the rear view mirror, so no morewondering, do I or don’t I have brake lights. This system has been in place faultlessly now forover twelve months. I suspect that the same simplemodification could be made to most early modelsthat rely on these rather untrustworthy pressureswitches.Philip Prior(If you have a simple tip or solution to a commonproblem, please send it in for publication)23
