The Dolomite Centre LtdDesign GuidelinesIn order to design a compatible PDMS device for use with the PDMS Chip Interface, it isnecessary to follow 5 simple steps:1. Decide if you require 4 fluidic connections or 8 fluidic connections.a. 4 connections can be made with one PDMS Chip Interface and one LinearConnector 4-way. Two chips can be mounted to each slide.b. 8 connections can be made with two PDMS Chip Interfaces and two LinearConnectors 4-way. One chip can be mounted to each slide.2. Decide if your device length fits onto the standard 50 x 25 mm slide or if yourequire the longer 75 x 25 mm slide.3. Design pad features in PDMS (recommended Ø1 mm) at a pitch of 3 mm to alignwith Ø0.5 holes in glass slide. These are the inlet and outlet ports.4. Design outer dimensions of PDMS device ensuring that the boundaries are withinthe maximum width and length specified.a. Maximum width is 15 mm. The maximum distance from outside port toPDMS side edges is 3 mm.b. Maximum length depends on the number of fluidic connections (step 1)and the slide size selected (step 2). The maximum distance from inlet andoutlet ports to PDMS back edge is 3 mm.5. Design channel features in PDMS ensuring that all features to be viewed arepositioned at least 3 mm from the inlet and outlet ports. Visible features should beoutside of the red box in the diagram below.PDMS_chip_interface_product_datasheet Page 8 of 12

The Dolomite Centre LtdFabrication GuidelinesFabrication of the PDMS device can be carried out using existing soft lithographicmethods and equipment:1. Fabricate a photoresist master (spin coat photoresist onto a silicon wafer, exposeand develop).2. Degas the PDMS mixture. Then cast the PDMS onto the master, cure and peelthe wafer of PDMS replicas from the photoresist master. The PDMS height shouldbe no greater than 6 mm.3. Dice the wafer of PDMS replicas into individual chips ensuring that outerdimensions are within the allowed size.4. Ensure that bonding surfaces of the glass and PDMS are clean then expose bothsurfaces to O 2 plasma.5. Align PDMS pad features to holes in the glass slide by eye or using lowmagnification eyepiece or viewer. Apply light pressure to create bond.6. The completed PDMS chip can then be used with the PDMS Chip Interface.Described above is a typical soft lithography process, but alternative methods may beused for the creation of channel features in the PDMS.Example of PDMS replica mounted onto PDMS Chip SlidePDMS_chip_interface_product_datasheet Page 10 of 12
