FOREWORDThis publication provides the monthly Consumer Price Indices for Uganda (Composite) and for theeight urban centers of Kampala High Income, Kampala Low and Middle Income, Jinja, Mbale,Masaka, Mbarara, Gulu and Arua. The current Consumer Price Index was rebased from (July 1997 to June 1998 = 100) to (July 2005 toJune 2006 = 100) using weights calculated from the 2005/2006 Uganda National Household Surveydata. During the rebasing exercise, Kampala was decomposed into two centres and the Arua centrewas incorporated into the Index. In addition, the numbers of items in the revised Index wereincreased from 125 to 276.At the elementary level, the indices are computed using the Jevons (Geometric Mean) method for allproducts within the elementary aggregates. The modified Laspeyres index formula is used tocompute higher level indices. The National CPI is computed as a weighted average of the 8 centerConsumer Price Indices.J.B.
