From the PresidentTis is an exciting time to be part of the GeologicalSociety of Australia. New governance structures arerare opportunities to guide the direction of the Societyfor years to come. While new management structures can bedaunting, and many cannot see the need for such radicalchange, we must also recognise the opportunities to steer theSociety in new directions. Structures that applied over 60 yearsago may not be as relevant today as they were at the birth ofour Society. Back then, members saw serving the GSA as aprivilege, and many sought to become involved. T oday, manyDivisions struggle to attract members to serve on committeesand the same faces keep cropping up year after year . Clearlythere needs to be a renewal of the structures.We are finalising a new governance document to go beforethe membership in the coming months. The document has beenchecked by various people in order to comply with Rules forsocieties such as ours, and to address some seriousshortcomings of the previous Rules in the light of currentlegislation. In a world where litigation is rife, committees suchas ours need the protection that the Associations IncorporationAct 1991 provides, but only if ourRules and procedures are inaccordance with the legislation.While none of us foresees legalissues arising, it is best to beassured that you are covered incase something goes wrong.As well as formulating Rules to comply with legislation, thecurrent changes provide us all with an opportunity to shape thefuture of the GSA. We in the Federal and Divisional committeeshave been involved in the process of rewriting the Rules. You —the members — have also had the chance to review what is inthe new documents. In order for the new governance to beimplemented during the life of the current Committee, theRules need to be ratified and will be implemented — ifapproved — at the next Annual General Meeting in the middleof the year. Following this approval, the Committee will thenimplement the new procedures so that the next Committee iselected in 2014 using the new Rules.One of the major changes relates to how the FederalExecutive is to be run. A Governing Council is to be elected foreither two or four years, and will undergo renewal every twoyears. Many members of the Governing Council will be electeddirectly by the State membership, giving the membership agreater say in how the Executive is to be run. The other Stateswill get their turn in two years time. The incoming Chair andTreasurer will come from the Governing Council. This modelwill give membership a more direct say in the Executive, and isgood for our members.I encourage you all to become involved and vote on thenew Rules when the opportunity comes around. It is importantfor all of us to be comfortable with the new Rules and thedirection they are going to take the Society .
