Aftergraduate school, he accepted a beef nutrition research position at Carrington Research Center inCarrington, ND. Then, he and his family moved to Deerfield, WI where he served in beef cattletechnical sales and consulting for Land O’Lakes. Jon’s wife Kim is also a graduate of the Univ.of Wisconsin-Madison and serves as a writer for Dairy Herd Management magazine. B.S./M.S. Degree ProgramsThe Departments of Animal Science and of Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biologyhave special degree programs in which excellent undergraduate students with researchexperience may be enrolled as a candidate for the M.S. degree during their last year of the B.S.degree program. Students may hold one-fourth time assistantships during the B.S. degreeprogram and then advance to a half-time assistantship after earning the B.S. degree. During2006, Andrew Brown (B.S. in agricultural biochemistry/M.S. in biochemistry) and Portia Allen(B.S., animal science/M.S., Nutritional Science) were participants in this concurrent degreeprogram.Relay for LifeJulie Roberts and Leo Timms once again organized a team of departmental members towalk/run in the 2006 Relay for Life of Iowa State University, a fundraising project for theAmerican Cancer Society. This year’s all night event was organized by ISU students and startedat 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 31 and concluded at noon on Sunday, April 1. Between Leo, Julie,a Meat Science Club group, and several individual members from animal science, the “animalscience animals” team was represented throughout the night and raised over $1,500 for cancerresearch. The Relay for Life fundraiser in Story County was begun in honor of NutritionalPhysiology alum Peggy Neppel Darrah, who lost her life because of cancer. Also, on August 26the “JR Team” consisting of Jim Russell, John Rathmacher, and Julie Roberts participated in a5K for Life at Brookside Park, again raising money for cancer research.Marriage of Elizabeth WilliamsOn October 7, 2006, Elizabeth Williams and Darrin Karcher were married in Lahaska, PA.Darrin is a graduate student in poultry science at Purdue University. Darrin will soon be takingan extension position in the Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University. Initial objectives were to facilitate communication among researchers andcoordination of graduate curricula leading to degrees in nutrition. Many of you remember thefamous Saturday morning winter quarter Modern Views of Nutrition seminars. Anotherdevelopment of the Council was the development of the graduate courses in energy (AnS 618),protein (AnS 619), and vitamins and minerals (AnS 620) that were developed in the 60s. Withretirements of the teachers of those courses, offerings of graduate courses were to change. As aresult of these and other developments, Council members developed an InterdepartmentalGraduate Program in Nutritional Sciences (IGPNS) that was approved by the Board of Regentsin 2006.The Program offers a major of Nutritional Science for M.S. and Ph.D. degree students with fourspecializations of Animal Nutrition, Human Nutrition, Global Nutrition, or Molecular/CellularNutrition. The current majors of Animal Nutrition in Dept. of Animal Science and Nutrition inDept. of Food Science and Human Nutrition were dropped.
