Religious EducationReligious Education is an important part of any education system as it essentiallysensitizes and nurtures in citizens a value system and also develops in the pupils aconsciousness of their relationship with the Creator. It is principally the duty of thefamily to bring up its child with awareness of the religious injunctions which form his/herearliest environment. It is, therefore, primarily the duty of the parents to providesufficient education in the child’s religion to influence the receptive mind to the demandsof that religion. The responsibility of the State is essentially to support the family in as faras religious education is concerned. But the State does not replace the family. We shouldbe mindful of the experiences of totalitarian political dispensations in communist stateswhere the State took over the entire ethical and moral upbringing of the child. The Statecan only add to the efforts of the family and the State’s role in replacing family met withlittle success. Therefore, efforts by the State in providing religious education directlyshould be mindful of the family’s obligations and privileges in this regard. It should bethe function of the State to help the family as far as possible without replacing the familyitself. The State should ensure that publicly provided religious education should not bedivisive in implications and should lead to cohesion amongst all peoples. Religiouseducation should be so formulated that it nurtures a respect and tolerance for all faiths/denominations.Religious Education should be easily available to the citizens and there should be nocompulsion for believers in one faith to pursue religious education of another one.Therefore, civil society organizations like Madrassahs should be facilitated andencouraged to provide prejudice-free religious education to their followers. There shouldbe no compulsion for minorities to pursue Islamic studies in all schools at any levels.This right is also provided by the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan whichguarantees freedom of practice of any faith without coercion from any quarter.As stated earlier, Islamic ideology must determine the education policy as such andprovide for options that will enable the Pakistani Muslim to develop himself or herself asa true Muslim, following the fundamentals of the religion and concerning himself orherself in a continuing application of true Islam to his or her life. The problem ofMuslims in the last some centuries has been that we shied away from research-basedseeking of knowledge and divested ourselves of the spirit of enquiry that alone permitsbreaking of new grounds and reaching higher levels of enlightenment. We have tounburden ourselves of the weight of centuries of nostalgia, suffocating our capacities tofind our way out from the darkness of ignorance. The level of research-based knowledgein the Muslim world got capped several hundreds years back. Now when the Muslimsfind themselves confronted with latest developments in the world outside Islam, we areforced to resort to medieval answers to modern problems. This is why the Muslim youthsin Pakistan today is baffled and stunned and finds no alternative to fighting the ghosts ofmodern evils. They are more like medieval knights in shining armour, fighting windmillswith their swords like Don Quixote. The spirit of Ijtihad having been lost due to lack ofenquiry, the Pakistani Muslim is drowned in a sea of bigotry.
