3LOCATIONBUDAPEST, HUNGARY<strong>Budapest</strong> is a vibrant city of around 1.7 millioninhabitants and the capital of Hungary. It isregarded as one of the liveliest and most beautifulcities of Europe. The River Danube flowsthrough the heart of the city dividing the twoprincipal areas of the capital: residential andhistoric Buda on the hilly western bank, andPest on the eastern bank, where most governmental,commercial and cultural institutionsare located. While studying in one of the world’smost hospitable cities, students will attendcourses at the ideally located, well-equipped,historic and spacious campus of <strong>McDaniel</strong> Europeon the Pest side.Hungary, with a population of 10 million, lies inthe very heart of Europe. Since May 1 2004, it hasbeen a member of the European Union. Othermajor European cities are within easy reach of <strong>Budapest</strong>.The climate in Hungary is temperate, andsunshine is a dominant feature, except for somerain and snow from November through January. Inwinter the temperature can sink as low as −10 °Cand in the summer rise above 30 °C.WESTMINSTER, MARYLAND, U.S.A.The 160-acre campus of <strong>McDaniel</strong> <strong>College</strong> overlooksWestminster, a charming and historic townin central Maryland. 4tion to spend some time at the home campus inMaryland, many students of the <strong>Budapest</strong> campusfeel that their education would not be completewithout the unique experience of becoming part ofa predominantly American student communityand making the best use of the excellent academicand internship opportunities in Maryland.THE AMERICAN SYSTEM OFHIGHER EDUCATIONKnown for its flexibility, the American system ofhigher education has several distinctive features.First, it provides a broader and more varied educationthan many other systems by giving itsstudents three kinds of courses: general coursesto fulfill competence requirements, requiredcourses within their chosen fields of study, andelectives, which students can choose from anydiscipline that interests them.Another characteristic of the American systemis that it continuously assesses studentsfrom the beginning, thus providing regulas feedbackto the students about their academic progress.This progress is measured in credit hours,of which a student must earn 128 at <strong>McDaniel</strong> tograduate with a Bachelor’s degree, the standardfirst degree in American higher education.One credit equals 15 hours of classroom instructionin a semester comprising 15 weeks, in otherwords, a four-credit course will involve at least60 hours of classroom instruction in one semester.Students satisfying all requirements for acourse and achieving a passing grade will earnfour credits for each course listed on the curriculumof <strong>McDaniel</strong>, unless otherwise indicated.Students are required to maintain satisfactoryacademic standing throughout their studies.The formal requirement for entry into anAmerican college is successful completion of secondaryor high school education, which meansabout twelve years of schooling altogether. Traditionally,a Bachelor’s degree can be attained infour years of study. In the American system, thefirst degree is a prerequisite for admissioninto any graduate (Master’s) program, orprofessional school (law, medicine, etc.)THE ACADEMIC PROGRAMThe academic standards and regulations, themajor and degree requirements of <strong>McDaniel</strong>Europe in <strong>Budapest</strong> are identical with those ofthe main campus in the United States. The permanentacademic records of all students in <strong>Budapest</strong>are kept by the Registrar’s Office of<strong>McDaniel</strong> <strong>College</strong> and students graduating fromcollege both in <strong>Budapest</strong> and in Westminster willreceive their Bachelor of Arts degrees from Mc-Daniel <strong>College</strong>.The regular academic year consists of twosemesters (Fall Semester from the beginning ofSeptember to the middle of December; SpringSemester from the end of January to the middleof May), and optional January Terms.MAJOR FIELDS OF STUDYStudents admitted into <strong>McDaniel</strong> Europe in<strong>Budapest</strong> can choose from ten major fields ofstudy or dual majors:Art HistoryArtSpecialization in Art and Art HistoryBusiness AdministrationCommunicationEconomicsPolitical Science and InternationalStudiesBusiness Administration & EconomicsPolitical Science & EconomicsPsychology


5Each major offers a basic program, involvingup to 52 credit hours of required coursework (thirteenfour-credit courses) within the chosen field ofstudy and from supplementary disciplines. Often,students with a traditional major will also chooseone or more minors in other areas of study, eitherto complement the major or for personalenrichment. The minimum requirement for aminor is completion of at least 24 credit hours (sixcourses) in the given field. The dual major is apopular choice among students. Though it offersless depth in a single area, but broader perspectiveby combining the requirements of two majors.The double major is an option for the most ambitiousstudents who want to graduate with twocomplete major programs to broaden their preparationfor future careers.Students who are undecided about the majorfield of study that would interest them are notrequired to declare a major in the first year, asall the courses they take will contribute to thecompletion of the requirements for graduation. Itis advisable, however, to reach a decision by theend of the first academic year.THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCEAll students are encouraged to complete atleast one semester at the home campus ofthe college in the United States during theirstudies. It is also possible to transfer to themain campus for the upper two years ofstudy, leading to the degree.Students from the <strong>Budapest</strong> Campus areentitled to a 54 percent discount from thestandard tuition fee on the main campus inMaryland. This is a special privilege that isavailable only for the students who transferto the main campus from <strong>McDaniel</strong> Europein <strong>Budapest</strong>.The main campus offers wide variety of academicprograms: 26 majors, 26 dual majors and50 minors. In addition to the major fields ofstudy available in <strong>Budapest</strong>, <strong>McDaniel</strong> <strong>Budapest</strong>students transferring to the main campus havethe option to graduate with other majors as well.International students who complete the senioryear (4 th year) leading to the degree at thehome campus of the college in Maryland areentitled to the benefits of the federal program ofOptional Practical Training (OPT). It enablesinternational students to prolong their stays inthe U.S. after graduation and take jobs withoutneeding to apply for work visas.MAJOR PROGRAMS OFFEREDIN BUDAPESTArt History (45 credits), Art (49 credits), andSpecialization in Art and Art History (41credits)Art and Art History majors work to nurturestudents’ understanding of the various arts and todevelop their artistic and creative abilities, whetherfor their own intellectual growth or for successin an art career. The program prepares student fora multitude of careers. Students majoring in artmay plan their programs for graduate study instudio art, graphic design, art history, or museumstudies, or for school teaching.Business Administration (48 credits)Business Administration majors acquire a broadliberal arts education and the necessary skills forsuccessful careers in business and government.Other academic options include a dual major inBusiness Administration/Economics (56 credits), aminor in Business Administration (24 credits).Economics (44 credits)Through a major, dual major, or minor inEconomics, students can tailor their courseworkto prepare for careers and graduate study in suchfields as finance, business, economic analysis,government and foreign service.


6Communication (44 credits)An interdisciplinary major, communication dealswith the history, function, processes, and analysisof human communication from the earliest times totoday’s mass communication. The major programprepares students for professional careers in theprint and electronic media, advertising, public relations,etc. The program offers opportunities forinternships in the field of communication, includingradio, television, and newspapers.Political Science and International Studies(46 credits)The major in Political Science is designed to providean understanding of political systems in generaland of the American government, European andworld affairs in particular. It provides a particularlyuseful professional background for public service,diplomacy, journalism, and as a preparation for lawstudies. In the upper two years, the program offersoff-campus (internship) opportunities for study bothin Hungary and in the United States.Psychology (44 credits)The <strong>McDaniel</strong> Europe program provides studentsa rigorous theoretical and practical trainingnecessary for a career as a psychologist in medicine,business, and education, as well as preparation forgraduate-level work. Areas examined in the majorinclude: behavioral psychology, cognitive psychology,neurology and psychophysiology, developmentalpsychology, personality psychology, social psychology,quantitative research methods, health psychology,organizational and workplace psychology.Dual major in Business Administration andEconomics (56 credits)Because of the substantial number of Economicscourses required by the major in Business Administration,many students decide to complete adual major in Business Administration and Economics,which combines the advantages of boththe theoretical and the applied discipline. Thecourse requirements in Accounting, Marketing,Management, Finance, Micro- and MacroeconomicTheory, International Economics, Statistics,and Mathematics provide a sound foundation forsuccessful careers in business and economics.Dual major in Political Science and Economics(56 credits)This dual major is particularly useful forthose who want to acquire an interdisciplinaryknowledge, based on the close relationship ofpolitics and economics in an era characterized bythe forces of globalization.DEGREE REQUIREMENTSStudents are required to fulfill the followingrequirements during the four years of study toearn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree:• Complete successfully at least 128 credithours (earn 128 credits). The last 32 credithours have to be completed in residence at<strong>McDaniel</strong> <strong>College</strong>. Courses taken in <strong>Budapest</strong>count as courses taken in residence. A maximumof 12 credits may be earned for internships.• Attain an overall Grade Point Average ofat least 2.0 in all the courses taken duringthe studies.• Complete all course requirements for atleast one academic major, subject to thefollowing regulations:a/ You must attain an overall Grade PointAverage (GPA) of 2.0 or above in all thecourses required for the majorb/ The GPA for double and dual majors iscalculated separately for each department.To complete a double or dual major,you must have a GPA of at least 2.0 inEACH subject area (discipline) and itssupplementing courses


7c/ Although completion of a minor is not arequirement for graduation, most studentsdecide to complete one or more. The requirementsfor a minor are: completion ofat least 24 credit hours (24 credits) andother requirements as set by the sponsoringdepartment with an overall GPA of atleast 2.0 or better in all the courses takenfor the minor• Complete the requirements for the<strong>McDaniel</strong> Plan for Integrated Study inthe Liberal ArtsCompletion of thirteen courses in study skills,college writing, interdisciplinary and crossculturalstudies, scientific inquiry, quantitativereasoning, social, historical and culturalunderstanding, textual analysis and creativeexpression. Major courses with <strong>McDaniel</strong>designations can be used to satisfy the distributionrequirements of the <strong>McDaniel</strong> Plan aswell. Courses with dual designations can beused to satisfy several distribution requirements.• Complete one January/June TermJanuary/June Term is a three-week term fortwo credits in which students and facultyexplore new areas of knowledge.• Physical Activity and Wellness (four courses)Each student must demonstrate an acceptablelevel of knowledge and competence in fourcourses or activities that are intended to developphysical fitness and skills.• Second Language / TOEFL RequirementAll students whose native language is notEnglish will be required to pass the Test ofEnglish as a Foreign Language with appropriatescores (at least 80 on the Internetbasedtest) by the end of the sophomore (2 nd )year.Native speakers of English must demonstrateproficiency in a second language by oneof the following:a/ complete three college-level courses in asecond language, including a 2 nd -year intermediate-levelcourseb/ pass an intermediate-level proficiencyexam in a second language before an approvedexamination boardc/ complete an approved program of secondlanguage in a study abroad programSecond language study will not be required ofthose native speakers who are demonstrablyproficient in a language other than English(e.g. lived and were educated in a foreigncountry for a prolonged period of time).CURRICULUMAll courses listed on the curriculum representfour credits, unless otherwise indicated. Thestandard workload is to take four regular coursesin one semester and earn 16 credits, but studentsshould undertake programs they can handlesuccessfully. Twelve credit hours (three regularcourses) is the minimum a student should carryin order to be considered “full-time”. No studentwill be allowed to carry six regular courses in onesemester.ACADEMIC REGULATIONSGRADING SYSTEMThe scholastic standing of students is indicatedby a system of grades designated by the lettersA, B, C, D, F and I. Plus and minus grades (e.g.an A− or a B+) may be assigned and will influencea student’s grade point average. A, B, C andD are passing grades, “A” indicating the work ofthe highest rank, “D” of the lowest. Studentsreceiving a grade of “F” (Failure) must repeat thecourse if they wish to receive credit for it. A studentwho withdraws from a course before thedeadline specified for withdrawals on the Calendarreceives a grade of “W” and the course will


8not be counted in figuring the student’s gradepoint average. After the stated date, failure tomeet course obligations will be graded “F” and sorecorded.SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESSTo maintain class standing, students are expectedto complete the normal academic programwith at least 2.0 or “C” average. Any studentwhose cumulative grade point average dropsbelow 2.0 will receive a letter of academic warningsetting out the requirements for improvinghis/her academic standing. Any student whosegrade point average falls below the limits specifiedin the standards for satisfactory academicprogress will be placed on academic probationand may be suspended or dismissed from collegeif he/she is unable to attain a grade point averageof at least 2.0 in the following semester.CLASS ATTENDANCEIn all courses regular and prompt attendance isrequired. Irregular attendance or prolonged absencewithout any justifiable cause will result indenying credit for the given course. Absence fromclass does not excuse the student from class assignments,recitations, readings, term reports,examinations and any other academic work designatedby the instructor.REPEAT POLICYA student has the option to repeat and pass acourse previously failed in order to gain creditstoward graduation. The student will receive thequality points for the new grade, and the originalfailing grade will no longer be used to determinethe grade point average, however, it will not bedeleted from the student’s transcript. If a studentrepeats a course previously passed in orderto obtain a better grade, he/she does not earn anynew credits toward graduation. There is no limitto the number of repeats a student may take.ADMISSION AND APPLICATIONREQUIREMENTS<strong>McDaniel</strong> Europe in <strong>Budapest</strong> welcomes all applicationsfor admission by students with appropriateacademic qualifications, a good commandof English, and a strong motivation to study.<strong>McDaniel</strong> Europe in <strong>Budapest</strong> follows a systemof rolling admissions, in other words, studentsmay enter the four-year degree program in bothsemesters as the curriculum enables them to takeall first-semester courses in the spring as well.APPLICATION REQUIREMENTSTo apply to <strong>McDaniel</strong> Europe in <strong>Budapest</strong>, completethe attached application form and enclosethe following:1. A personal essay (300 words minimum). Thispersonal essay helps us become acquaintedwith you as a person and student. Write aboutyour family background, your upbringing,your motivations for seeking admission intoan American degree program and choosingthe major field of study you have indicated,your longer-term career goals, any topic orview that you find important to share with us.2. Photocopy or official transcript of graduationfrom Senior High School, Certificate of FinalExamination, Diploma of Graduation, andother documents demonstrating that you havecompleted secondary education and are qualifiedfor entry into an institution of highereducation; test scores of American collegeboundexams (SAT, ACT) if you graduatedfrom high school in the United States, andcertified and authentic English translations ofall documents originally issued in languagesother than English.3. Two Letters of Recommendation in Englishfrom the Principal or instructors of the secondaryschool you graduated from or fromemployers you worked for;

The entrance examinationconsists of a multiple choice language proficiencytest, a Test of Written English, an essay assignmenton general topics for Communication andPolitical Science majors, or Mathematics (Arithmeticand Basic Algebra) for Business and Economicsmajors, to be followed by an oral interview.For applicants wishing to enter the Programin the Fall Semester, the examinations are usuallyheld in the third week of June. 10AcceptanceApplicants who take the entrance examinationin <strong>Budapest</strong> will be notified of the result atthe end of the oral interview on the second day ofthe exams. Students who take the entrance examinationabroad will be notified of the resultswithin three weeks. Those who applied for admissionfrom countries outside Europe are requiredtransfer the tuition fee for the first academicyear in full or in part before applying forthe Hungarian student visa (see chapter on Costof the Four-year Program for details). If a studentcannot enter the program because he/shehas been unable to obtain the student visa forHungary, the tuition fee will be refunded.TRANSFER CREDITSStudents wishing to transfer credits for coursestaken at other accredited American collegesshould enclose a transcript to their application,together with a short description of the coursescompleted. In addition, an official transcriptshould be sent from their institution directly tothe Registrar’s Office of <strong>McDaniel</strong> <strong>College</strong> (2<strong>College</strong> Hill, Westminster, MD 21157-4390,U.S.A.). Credits will be granted for major coursesand standard liberal arts courses comparable tothe offerings of <strong>McDaniel</strong> <strong>College</strong>, provided thatthey are based on grades of “C” or better.The college recognizes International Baccalaureate(IB) Diploma and grants credits to newstudents for higher-level exams with test scoresof 5 or higher.ENTRY PERMIT FOR HUNGARYInternational students from countries under visaobligation are required to apply for a residencepermit for the purpose of studies at the HungarianEmbassy or Consulate in their home countries.The entry permit will be granted on presentingthe Letter of Acceptance from the receivinginstitution and proof of payment for tuition(instructions for payment will be enclosed to yourLetter of Acceptance). Students will have to registerwith the Immigration Office in <strong>Budapest</strong>within 30 days upon arrival. International studentsfrom “visa free” countries (e.g. Argentina,Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Israel, U.S.) may enterHungary without having to apply for an entrypermit, but they will also be required to apply fora residence permit on arrival. Citizens of countriesof the European Union and the EuropeanEconomic Area will be required to register theiraddresses at the Immigration Office at the end ofthe first 90-day period of their stay.Those applying for a residence permit will berequired to declare that they do not suffer fromAIDS, venereal disease, pulmonary tuberculosisor leprosy, nor are they carriers of typhus orparatyphus bacteria.HOUSINGThe <strong>Budapest</strong> Campus of <strong>McDaniel</strong> <strong>College</strong> hasno dormitory facilities, but housing arrangementscan be made, upon request, through theStudent Service (www.budapesthousingservice.com, apalfi@mcdaniel.hu).
