<strong>Central</strong> <strong>Drug</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, CSIRPerformance <strong>Report</strong>The year 2010-11 is the Diamond Jubilee Year of CDRI. Housed in the historicChattar Manzil, an old palace of the Nawabs of Awadh, the institute was formallyinaugurated on 17 February 1951 by the then Prime Minister of India, PanditJawahar Lal Nehru. The institute was set up with the objective to carry outbiomedical research in all its aspects and to build a strong scientific andtechnological base for the development of drug and pharmaceutical industry inthe country. Initially, it started with five R&D divisions and a skeletal staff ofscientists and technicians. Today, the institute has emerged as an internationallyrecognized centre for biomedical research and has a distinction of having all theinfrastructural facilities for development of new drugs from conceptual tocommercialization stage. In the persuit of new drugs and technologies, CDRI has discoveredand developed 12 drugs and more than 100 process technologies. Several of its products were commercialized successfully andcurrently four products are in market. The antimalarial drugs Arteether and Artemether are being marketed in more than 30countries of Asia and African continents. Memory Sure is being marketed in more than 8 countries. Centchroman, the only antiimplantationagent approved for clinical use in the world, is being marketed under a brand name Saheli. It is a widely endorsedcontraceptive pill in India.thOn 14 July, 2010, Dr. K. Kasturirangan, Member Planning Commission and FormerChairman, ISRO inaugurated the CDRI Diamond Jubilee Celebrations byunveiling of Diamond Jubilee Logo and Poster. To commemorate the year,several mini symposia, workshops, lectures by eminent scientists, across theglobe, were organized. The institute continued to make steady progress in allaspects during the year.
