Major Events OrganizedSeminar on Purification Media by GE HealthcareLife SciencesGE Healthcare Life Sciences organized a one day seminaron Purification Media on 4 April 2011 at CSIR-CDRI. Experts from theabove organization gave lecture on following topics: Detergentscreening for optimized purification conditions for Histidine-taggedmembrane proteins & Multimodal chromatography – the “All in One”resin; Purification of GST-tagged proteins using prepacked columns;Protein phosphorylation and sample prep and simple proteinpurification and enrichment with magnetic beads. Scientists andresearch fellows from CSIR-CDRI and other Lucknow basedinstitutes participated in the deliberations.Training Program on <strong>Research</strong> Applications of FlowCytometryCSIR-CDRI and BD Biosciences (India) organized a five-daytraining program on ‘<strong>Research</strong> Applications of Flow Cytometry’ from16-20 May 2011. The program covered diverse research applicationsof flow cytometry such as multicolor immunophenotyping, cell cycleand apoptosis, cell signaling, cytokine analysis and cell sorting througha mix of didactic presentations, interactive discussion sessions andwet lab demonstrations.participated. On this occasion Prof. S. P. Dikshit, Ex- HOD, HindiDepartment, Lucknow University addressed the workshop as theChief Guest. Dr. V.N. Tiwari delivered a lecture on, “Unicode font kisahayta se computers par Hindi main Karya karne ki sambhavnayen”.Besides, Dr. Vijay Karn, Professor, Vidyant College, Lucknow andDr. S.K. Wet lab experiment onapoptosis was performed by Mr. Anupam Jyoti and Mr. Ravi ShankarKeshari.Orientation Programme for CSIR-CDRI’s NewlyJoined StaffCSIR-CDRI, Lucknow for the first time organized Orientationprogram to its newly joined scientists, techni cal staff andadministrative personnel to familiarize them with the vision, mission,goals, ethos /culture of CSIR-CDRI and introduce them to national /global S&T and industrial scenario, IPR and contract R&D etc. Thefirst phase of the program was held during 7-29 June 2011 whichincluded visits to all the divisions of CSIR-CDRI. About 19 newlyjoined scientists and 12 technical staff participated in this orientationprogram. During their visit, all the Head of divisions gave a briefintroduction of their laboratory followed by visit to all the laboratoryand facilities in that division and interaction with bench scientists tohave hands-on experience.Hindi KaryashalaA two day workshop on Hindi Bhasha was organized atCSIR-<strong>Central</strong> <strong>Drug</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, Lucknow during 27-28 June2011, in which, the members of Nagriya Rajbhasha KaryanvayanSamiti (NRKS) Lucknow and all the employees of CSIR-CDRIA three day workshop for the five member delegation fromTISTR, Thailand in the areas of Herbal drugs / medicinal plants: Lung& brain diseases, diabetes and hepatitis’ was organized during 28-30 June 2011 at CSIR-CDRI, Lucknow. The delegates were briefedwith the activities of the institute and enquired upon the happeningsat TISTR, Thailand. There were exchanges of assurances on futurecollaborative measures from both institutes. Domain experts in theabove area from CSIR-CDRI, CSIR-IITR and CSIR-CIMAP gave detailedpresentations on different topics of interest followed by visit to thelaboratories. In the concluding session, the delegation expressedtheir satisfaction over the workshop and added that they shall briefabout this workshop to the Governor, TISTR who shall, later thisyear, may invite the Director and other domain experts to visit TISTRand enable them to establish the research groups on Diabetes,Toxicology etc and can initiate the bilateral collaborative researchprograms. Thomson Innovation organized a live demonstration cumtraining programme on 12 August 2011 at CSIR-CDRI. The idea behind observance of Sadbhawna Diwas is toavoid violence and to promote goodwill among the people. All theemployees of CSIR-CDRI participated in this occasion and took the“Pledge of Sadbhawana” that they will work for the emotional onenessand harmony of all the people of India regardless of caste, region,religion or language.Symposium on Proteins Shaped His Life: In Vinod’sMemoryA one day symposium entitled “Proteins Shaped His Life-inVinod’s Memory” was organized by CSIR-CDRI to pay tribute to lateDr. Vinod Bhakuni on August 24, 2011. The occasion was graced byformer Directors of the <strong>Institute</strong> and family members of Dr. VinodBhakuni. Scientists and students of the institute joined to payrespects to his memory. The symposium started with a presentationof photographs of Dr. Vinod Bhakuni and an account of his scientificcontributions. <strong>Other</strong> <strong>Activities</strong>About 19 participants from CSIR-CDRI underwent training under thisprogram.Vigilance Awareness Week 2011In accordance with the guidelines of <strong>Central</strong> VigilanceCommission, Vigilance Awareness Week was organised during 31October to 5 November 2011. All members of the CDRI staff tookpledge to ensure transparency, identify root causes of corruptionand eradicate it from the society at all cost to the best of theirabilities. Dr. G.K. Goswami, IPS, SSP, Indian Railway, Lucknowdelivered an interesting talk on the subject. During the week, severalprograms were organized including Lecture, Debate and Essaycompetition. Winners of the events were given prizes during thevaledictory function, chaired by Dr. T.K. Chakraborty, Director, CSIR-CDRI, held on November 5, 2011.November to 1 December 2011. The experts from ILS assisted theprogramme which includes preparation of samples, labeling samples,Hybridization, Image analysis using software and data interpretations.Since the workshop was hands-on in nature, participation waslimited to only ten research fellows, from different divisions.National Conference on Challenges in <strong>Drug</strong>Discovery and DevelopmentIndian Society of Chemists and Biologists, India organizedits National Conference on “Challenges in <strong>Drug</strong> Discovery andDevelopment (CDDD-2011) on 9-10 December 2011. Dr. P.M.S.Chauhan, General Secretary of the ISCB was organizing secretaryof this conference. Prof. Anamik Shah, president of ISCB and Dr.G.C. Saxena, president of Indian Council of Chemists and former VCAgra and Avadh University were present in inaugural function. Thetwo days scientific programs included 17 invited lectures by theeminent scientists and 4 oral presentations. 50 posters werepresented by young scientists and Ph. D. students in three differentposter sessions. Several Scientists presented their work on <strong>Drug</strong><strong>Research</strong>, Chemical Sciences, Bionanotechology, Chemical Biology,Glycobiology and Biochemistry. About 150 delegates from India haveparticipated this conference. The close interaction of scientists withvaried interests in diverse fields of the research is important. Thisconference has provided common platform and opportunities to theresearchers in the areas of chemical sciences and biologicalsciences and other related areas to interact with each other formutual benefits.One day symposium on Antimalarials: Currentapproaches and future directionsA one day symposium on Antimalarials: Current approachesand future directions under the aegis of OSDDm, OSDDChemOutreach and MMV was organized on 16 November 2011. Theaudience included scientists, faculty and students from CSIR-CLRI,Chennai, CSIR-NIIST, Trivandrum, IIT, Kanpur and Guwahati, IISER,Mohali, Calcutta University, CSIR-IITR, CSIR-CIMAP and CSIR-CDRI.The Director CSRI-CDRI Dr. T.K. Chakraborty initiated the meeting bywelcoming the guests from India and abroad. Dr. Chakrabortyemphasized on the role of the open science for the development ofanti-infectives and apprised the audience about the significance ofdifferent programs CSIR has initiated in the area. Dr. Jeremy Burrow,Head Discovery, MMV, Geneva was the first speaker of the day. Hegave a brief introduction about the functioning of the MMV, a virtualand “not-for-profit” foundation with the mission to discover, developand deliver antimalarial drugs. Speakers from India and abroad gavedeliberations on current approaches and future directions forantimalarials. Prof. CL Khetrapal gave a talk on Role of NMR in humanhealth. He discussed how NMR technique can be used to control themetabolic disorders and heart diseases. The interrelationshipbetween science and spirituality was discussed at length. Dr. NareshKumar, from Pharmalabs Pvt. Ltd. Mumbai, discussed how moleculesfind their way to market and how simple techniques are useful increating novelty in the molecules so that it becomes a block buster.Dr. Anshuman Dixit from ILS, Bhuvaneshwar discussed the role ofmolecular modeling in drug discovery and different approaches tofatten the drug development. Prof. Manoj Kumar chaired the session.Dr. Nityanad ex- director CDRI presided over the function andfelicitated Dr. AK Saxena on occasion of his 60th Birthday. Dr. BNDhawan, ex-director CDRI also shared his views on this occasion.A gathering of scientists and students from different disciplinesinteracted during conference. Dr. RP Tripathi proposed a vote ofthanks.37th Mellanby Memorial LectureIn memory of Sir Edward Mellanby, Founder Director, CSIR-CDRI, the 37th Mellanby Memorial Lecture was organized on February10, 2012. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Samir K Brahmchari,Director General of CSIR, New Delhi. The topic of his lecture was“Science 2.0: Open Source <strong>Drug</strong> Discovery in Cyber Space”. Prof.Brahmachari discussed about the web based open innovationplatform which opens up new opportunities for a systems biologyapproach to identify the Achiilles’ heel in the Mtb bug. He said, usingthis new dataset, we have built a protein interaction map of Mtbincluding more than 1400 proteins and identified the set of proteinswhich are essential in maintaining the integrity of this protein networkfor the growth and survival of Mtb.
